  1. Either way, I'm glad I don't live next door to you.
  2. if it was in ireland id have a go at handling it, im always up for a challenge, if anyone has a mental dog like this im after something to train as a personal protection dog for my own use You're a nugget. wow, your opinion is really constructive, i bow down to your superior knowledge He's obviously right though, you're the perfect example of the irresponsible owner the O.P is talking about. You've never trained a dog for personal protection and you want something "mental" as a beginner's dog. You've got completely the wrong idea of the characteristics required for persona
  3. Great stuff Stabs and unfortunately unscrupulous ownership and breeding is happening with other powerful breeds too. Some of the things I've seen recently have raised concerns for me, particularly the lack of concern for temperament shown by some of the English Bull Terrier and American Bulldog breeders. I just don't think some people understand their dogs behaviour or capabilities well enough to be making informed decisions about what should and shouldn't be bred from, either that (or far worse) they just don't care. I was talking to a man I met about my EBT and he was telling me about ho
  4. It's not the lactose in milk that dogs are intolerant of (how would pups feed from their mother if they were?), it's the fact that the fat molecules in Cow's milk are relatively large and can't be digested by alot of dogs (and 1 in 7 people for that matter), the fat molecules in Goat's milk are much smaller and therefore are more easily digested. It's a good source of protien, fat and obviously calcium so it's good stuff to build up an undernourished dog, just don't over-do the quantity.
  5. Anything less than a fully mature dog should only be doing a couple of minutes at most and at a slow speed just for them to get used to it. You should leave them wanting to do more, if you start to stretch them physically then they may get bad associations with it, it should be nothing more than a bit of fun with plenty of encouragement and praise.
  6. Whenever treadmills are mentioned all the myths raise their heads. When use properly electric treadmills can be a great ADDITION to a training, it's not a replacement for anything. It won't build "huge muscles" any more than running anywhere else will. It's a low impact way to diagnose lameness and can help with their recovery. It's also a superb way to provide controlled aerobic exercise. It's only a bad thing when it's used in the wrong way and when it's used as a replacement for walking. You can start them really young just to get them used to it but don't start to push th
  7. Cheers, I'll get him down the gun shop for a look around.
  8. Thanks, I'll tell him to avoid the Squirrels. Any thoughts on a sight/laser dot?
  9. My brother has just got himself a Weihrauch HW45 (springer version) for free the lucky *******. He would like to get a sight for it but I'm not sure what's best with pistols. Would a red/green laser dot sight be O.K for popping a few Squirrels? He also told me that he dry fired it by accident...Do you think any damage will have been done? What needs checking?
  10. There is not an unlimited amount of land just waiting for a good shooter to come clear. If you work out the number of folk that wish to hunt rabbits or whatever in the many ways they do, divide the total huntable acreage of this country by that number, then you would probably get a shocking figure. There is not always more land, with more quarry just waiting for you. As a result, many folk want to do a good job, but also keep enough about to ensure they can come back to that land. As for 'invasive, non native' - so are most of our quarry, and lets face it, we are VERY lucky that they have
  11. Before anyone points this out, yes I am new to shooting but personally I have no problem with the principle of taking as many rabbits as possible. They're an invasive, non native species and you're never going to get rid of them completely. If you manage to get rid of them on your permission then it will be easier to find more permission, I'm sure a reference from a happy land owner will go a long way to persuade other land owners that you're performing a genuinely useful service.
  12. I thought I'd logged into the Terrier section for a minute there but most of it's legible so it can't be...weird!
  13. I like shiny things too but I don't think I'll be upgrading it for a while yet
  14. The plus side being that if you get good with the gun you're given you may end up with a £13,000 50 cal sniper rifle...good enough for picking off the taliban at a mile and a half...it's not all bad. I get what you're saying though, some people just like shiny things, nothing wrong with that if you have the money.
  15. To be honest I was wanting to go straight out and start hunting but after shooting a bit I realised that it doesn't come completely naturally to me (as my sister in law proved by being way better than me) and my grouping it not as good as I'd hoped so I just need a little more time. The gun is also fairly new and is loosening up and getting more powerful so I think the drop off at distance may have changed slightly...I've got a cardboard box that I filled with more cardboard and foam, I mounted a target on it and was using it to practice. The pellets weren't going all the way through it at
  16. Good stuff, let us know how he gets on. I'd be interested to see how he turns out physically and in terms of hunting ability.
  17. Will do Marksman. I've been shooting a fair bit and getting used to the drop off at different distances. My brother was trying to get me over to his permission to shoot some rabbits but I don't think I'm ready yet, I'll keep practising.
  18. Damn! My Pure Ingles Bull is 22" and 27 kilos! That's one hefty dog for a cross! Are those weights his?
  19. Excellent, I'm off to work out what all those species look like
  20. Head shots it is then, thanks. BTW, when does the pheasant season start again?
  21. I've done some searching but it hasn't really answered my questions fully so here goes... As a beginner what should I be aiming for with different types of prey? I've been watching some videos on you tube and it raised some questions about what area I should be aiming at. With Rabbits it seems to be the head but with pigeons people tend to go for the chest...is this right for a beginner? I've also heard that a body shot to a pheasant won't necessarily kill it. What would you advise I aim for when shooting rabbits, wood pigeon and pheasant in particular?
  22. Thanks Mrs. Mole, it will be well looked after and enjoyed I can promise you that.
  23. Thanks again, much appreciated. I'm getting it nicely set up now and it is loosening up but still needs a bit more work. I took it to my brothers today and discovered that my sister in law has a bit of a talent for shooting. She made me look like a right muppet!
  24. Some of you may remember me asking for advice regarding what rifle I should go for as a complete beginner on a very tight budget. I got some great advice and kept my eye out for a Hatsan 60s. As it turns out Secretagentmole had one come up for sale second hand with a few extras so last week I became the proud owner of a Hatsan 60S under 3 months old, fitted with truglo sights, recoil system, quattro trigger, Hawke 4x32 scope, pellets, gunslip, targets and some camo gear all delivered for a very reasonable price. Moley also kindly offered me a bi-pod for free if I could collect but my littl
  25. Cracking looking bitch, that's one little mutt I'd definitely make room for.
