  1. Its true, the HO firearms guide for the police states .17 CF as minimum for fox, although you do find some constabularies allowing it.
  2. Normally I take my heads round my mate's house to use his jig, and more recently his jet wash as mine was knackered. I did all the skinning and labouring and he would sort the rest, bleach and mount. Anyhoo, Wednesday's buck's head was taking up valuable room in the freezer and the long haired one was chuffing a bit so I decided to crack on myself. Heads are much easier to cut when frozen and I had already skinned it and removed the eyes before freezing. A short nosed cut was in order so I held it steady on the workmate and set about it with a wood saw. All done by eye with no jig it came
  3. I managed to pick one up this morning, still had some winter coat in him which is a shame as I want a new rug . He had managed to break off his back point and brow tine on his left antler at some point this year. He was in the binos within a couple of minutes of leaving the car but took a while to get into due to the wind. There was a bit of pre rut activity with a doe too, which was nice to see.
  4. How did you get on? Not so well i seemed to bring rain when i am stalking we drew two blanks but there was heavy rain on the first stalk and the second was postboned only to poor down the afternoon before when it was rescheduled for just my luck ah well always next time i am looking at doing some more with john but i think funds are going to be redirected to a rifle for now. But for now i am booked on some stags in summer and am looking forward to it to no end and have one stalk booked on the escrick estate at some point that i got for my birthday but i need to speak to the keeper to
  5. George, you're still welcome to try my Swede
  6. 6.5x55 SE This round will knock reds down easily with a 140grn bullet. The Europeans used it for big game very successfully. having recently had a lecture on terminal ballistics I would choose the Swede over .308 any time; the difference in impact and energy transfer was surprising to say the least, those of us in the audience with 6.5's gave each othe a knowing look . If you want to go the one gun route, a 95 grn V-Max will deal with foxes very nicely. A Tikka lite with a small mod and you have a nice stalking/foxing unit. .243 is for girls {insert smiley with helmet on}
  7. Good point, I was having a think about how to stop them going brown all the way to the end. I'm goint to give this a go on some scabby spikes I cut off ages ago to make whistles with. Practice makes perfect
  8. Peroxide for the skull as already mentioned. I have heard tell of dripping potassium permangonate down the antlers whilst under a running tap but coudn't confirm this. Any one on here use that method or is it cobblers?
  9. I found that they hold both fine BUT once they have had HMR rounds in them they will not hold .22LR rounds due to being stretched.
  10. http://www.moonrakerknives.co.uk/ - Bought a tripe knife off these recently, good price, good service. http://www.doningtondeermanagement.co.uk/carcass_cutting_equipment.html - Bought a saw from David on this site, top notch, no dramas. There are a few others but these are the most recent.
  11. The longer barrels are because of the open sights fitted. Your BRNO is super long exactly for this reason and you could cut it to 12" with no discernable difference in performance or accuracy (I chopped my BRNO to 14" and it was fantastic, wish I still had it). The 20" barrels are a throwback from the open sight length, nothing to do with performance. You've answered all your own questions there Stubby. Go second hand, you won't be disappointed. Trigger done, bolt worked in, barrel floated, barrel fouled etc, etc. Also nine times out of ten you will get scope, mod, mounts, sling,
  12. I agree, I had the varmint barrel in HMR, wished I'd had the normal American.
  13. The rifles are produced in 20" barrels so a 16" barrel is a 'special order' as it will require cutting, threading and re-proof. I'd go 2nd hand if I were you, ther are some great bargains to be had. Getting the barrel chopped yourself will vary in price depending on who is doing the work, and to be honest you get what you pay for. Prices vary from £40-80ish.
  14. An extremely handsome dog there you have mate. My missus is fawning over your profile pic, I think we will have one before long
  15. There are different strengths of threadlock so make sure you get the mildest and use it sparingly or you'll never get the screws out again.
  16. I'm not sure if you can get reduced/subsonic factory rounds (I suspect not) but it is possible to handload, although I personally wouldn't bother. CF rifles are loud, it's the nature of the beast. If your .223 is unbearable you might want to look at your moderator as you shouls be able to shoot comfortably with a mod fitted. A quick Google on the subject brought up some results, you might want to start there.
  17. Nice pics there FD, and a cracking lung shot . No summer coats up here yet, just that tatty moulting look. Can't wait for the full summer coat, the missus wants a new rug.
  18. Beautiful dog that John. A GSP bitch will be my next next dog when my present pooch is no longer.
  19. Do we all have to make safety statements to cover our photos now John?
  20. Thanks for the comments John, yes the mag was empty and rifle proven clear all as part of the assessment process, not that I have to justify myself as competent with firearms to anyone on here. Let's not jump to conclusions wireviz. Neck shots are fine for DSC, when the conditions and range make them achievable, and they are preferable on the estate where possible, 41 yds (LRF) is well within my ability .
  21. As soon as you apply, they will send it to you.
