Gettin my 8 month old pup to jump
Cochyn replied to Rain's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
My young bitch is a slow/stubborn jumper. I find it helps if she isn't stood too close to the fence/gate and if I don't make a fuss. If she's on a chase though she jumps without thinking. -
How old's the dog mate? I've got a young bitch that is already finding her feet lamping but misses more than she catches in the day, (mainly due to her strike not being quite right). I'm not too bothered as I can see she's improving. I'm very careful that I don't knock her confidence though.

I saw my old man's old dog over a year old not interested in rabbits at all (and he was given plenty of chances I won't detail on here) and he turned out very keen. Not the best worker but keen. Not sure it was like a 'switch' but seemed to just suddenly show an interest.

what age was your bitch when you where taking her out hunting first? At 10 months I took her for a bit of lamping (3 squatters or easy runs per night) and ferreting (she was bored at first) and she took to it quite well. She'll do me anyway.

My old man had a collie grey whippet 20 years ago that didn't show interest in any quarry until he was 15 months. Once his prey drive kicked in it did so with a vengence and he would try to kill anything he thought he could. He was a blood thirsty bugger and could be a knighmare at times - cats, foxes, red deer, yorkshire terriers, pet rabbits, post men, anything. The bitch I have now would just stop and stare at rabbits until she was about 6 months (not that I was running her on them). I took her out to watch a bit of lamping and ferreting at 8 months and she's been mad keen since.

Nel - 14 month old whippet/grey/collie. 21tts, showing god signs, suprisingly tough and mad keen.

All in the game - true. I've stiched and stapled dogs myslef in the past and so am going to buy a new stapler. Still think I could have avoided it if I'd really been on the ball though.

I find it to be the other way round, they eat more in the winter months. They need to put fat on and keep a good coat... they lose weight in summeras they are far more active but stashing food is a sure sign that they are getting to much.. That's what I thought.

Yesterday was rediculous. Went for a quick mooch in the morning only to discover that there's mixy at my only local permission. My 11 month old bitch got a bad nick off a fence chasing a fit rabbit and I managed to drop and lose my lead. Bad start. Then found out an old colleage who is a right pain in the arse is going to be working with me. Got home accidentally broke a coat stand, smashed a wine glass and argued with the mrs and so went out for a shine in a right huff. I should have known better. I ran the bitch on the quarry in an unplanted field with a lean-to at the far side. The

Thanks lads. I thought I'd wait and see before replying. I think I've been overfeeding considering they've only been out twice in three weeks. Cheers

My jills are not eating the food I'm giving them. I'm finding the rabbit pieces, pheasant carcasses etc in their bedding virtually untouched. This is uncharacteristic as the albino I have is very greedy. They appear to have lost weight (down to the cold?) but have plenty of life in them. There are also less stools in their hutch. I had been giving them more food in the cold snap. Not sure if I'm just paraniod but they are unenthusiastic no matter what I offer (including dried food). Any advice appreciated.

I knew of a few lads that poached deer to order with bows. They would even take lambs! To my knowledge, didn't use dogs though.

Thanks lads. I'm going down with the lamp tomorrow night and so should know more by then. The reason I was thrown is that the dog didn't mark anywhere. Also, I can find little trade under the sheds. For those of you that have done it, what's the best way to ferret a shed or container? I would put a stop net around and hope the rabbit hits it.

I wonder if any of you lads have experience with allotments and locating buries? I have been asked by a group of allotments to try and sort out the rabbit numbers. The holders are struggling to grow anyhting and can regularly count upward of 10 rabbits on the site at dusk. They won't have any shooting, I'm not into trapping or snaring and so would like to use the ferret. Problem is, I can't find any occupied buries and have only only found a few empty scrapes anywhere near the site. I have walked extensively in about a half mile radius, through some stables, parkland with bankless hedges a

I think it depends on the dog as well. My bitch is 9 months and has taken to lamping far better than ferreting or mooching. She finds ferreting boring and starts to whine, play etc. But she is very focused when out lamping though and -while she still lacks a bit of top end speed- does well on the two or three slips I give her per session. ATB.

Cheers for all the advice. ATB

cochyn i live in monmouthshire you must be quite near to my area, weve got lots of farmers like that around here .They must have been dumped here just keep hunting mate.ATB Yup!

I agree with a lot of that. The stock were in the next field over and so there was a fence and style between the dog and the bullocks. You're right about the ROWs mind. Along the headge at the south, north and east of the field. He only admitted the one to the south being there.
-
Cheers lads. I'll try again with him. As others have said, you never know!
-
Thought about that, but -again- don't want to be known as trouble. He'll know it was me. ATB

Good advice. Diolch Dafydd.

I understand this but, thankfully, the bitch is now completely stock broken. She's a rabbit dog(21tts)and is unlikely to bother a bullock (she fears them!). I think my main issue was that the guy was threatening and didn't even give me a chance when I wasn't doing anything wrong. ATB

Its proving it tho chartpolski, no doubt if it came to that the farmer would tell the law cochyn's dog was worrying his bullocks, leaving cochyn to prove otherwise, just be a waste of time and for both i reckon, theres acres and acres upon acres to go at, i reckon he should head for them instead. I agree. The other thing is, I don't want to be seen as a trouble maker or someone causing a fuss by the other farmers. I'll never get any new permission.

Think I will do as I value the dog too much to mess about.
