I too am in Cambridgeshire and as AR177 says, you cannot put down fox as a reason for requiring rimfire but that is not the same thing as saying you cannot use rimfire against fox in any circumstances. Until a test case is brought that determines that a fox is NOT classed as vermin I do not see that anyone will ever be prosecuted for using rimfire against fox provided that the circumstances are reasonable and the dispatch humane. To Deker - is it the case that your pal has been told that he may not use his rimfire for fox, I wonder what his exact certificate wording is.

Firearms Question Please Help Me
dadioles replied to Stuart1985's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No, you do not need to own any land. You do need to persuade the police that your are an appropriate person and demonstrate "good reason" for the weapons requested. It sounds as though you are at least part way there with rabbit control work available to you. -
In my experience, although when next out I shall test it thoroughly, the point of impact does not change with magnification. It may be that I generally shoot on full magnification and also zero at full magnification. I will sometimes reduce the magnification for quarry that is nearer but that means my target is bigger and therefore I probably would not notice. To clarify... Rifle zeroed at 100 yards using 16x magnification. Shoot a rabbit in the head at 16x mag at 100 yards bullet hits within an area the size of a pound coin. Next rabbit is at 30 yards, I may reduce the magnification t

How To Use Scope Effectively?
dadioles replied to Alan Holmes's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I believe you are correct. -
I agree with all of your comments M4yge. A better app than the iScope one is VideoZoom2, also 65 pence. You will probably have to remove the rubber pads on the ends of the screws to make it fit your scope. The screws will now scratch your scope badly when you tighten them up! There are some thin sticky felt pads supplied which are thinner and just stick on to the screw ends. Clumsy. A better solution is to wrap something like a wide cable tie around the scope so the screws can bear down on that. Bad design, if the tube was about 4mm bigger diameter we would not have this problem. It doe

In some ways you would be better off asking what magnification or range of magnification people suggest. When you have waded through those replies ...... Its a bit out of my league but it sounds as though you have plenty of punch and quite a big target (fox / deer chest shots) compared to a rabbits brain which is my main quarry. So I guess relatively low magnification, say 3-9x would be sensible as it will give you a reasonable field of view and it will be quite bright - lower magnification = brighter and clearer. I have a Nikon with ed glass and 32x but that great a magnificat

You are largely right, it drives me nuts. Unfortunately we are surrounded by suits and antis and greens and wishy washy liberal townies and vegans and all manner of others who have tremendous influence based on unreasoned emotion and limited logic. This is all whipped up by the media who only want a quick headline to make money and swallowed by politicians who would do anything for a vote to keep them in a very comfortable life-style. We have to work within that system. I take every opportunity I can to educate people around me that guns are a good thing and that wildlife has to be c

There are two factors here. One is your ability to shoot accurately. The second is the power of your pellet. Take accuracy first. What is the maximum distance that you can shoot every pellet within a half inch circle, the size of a pound coin, the size of a rabbit brain!. That is your maximum range for shooting a rabbit. It is generally accepted that you need at least 5ftlbs of energy to humanely penetrate a rabbit skull and shoot it in the brain. For a 12ftlb air rifle that may equate to something like 75 yards. You need to calculate that by testing your pellet with a chrono.

A nice try smoothfinish and Elliot. Find wall.... bang head. There is no getting through to some people. It is always interesting to see what people post and judge their attitudes to wildlife and the law by what they write. Sometimes I feel refreshed by the arguments and modify my views, more often than not I just despair at the uncaring ignorant selfishness displayed by so many. Hey ho..... The bottom line was that someone trespassed onto private land and shot a heron which is a protected species. There is no defence. The person or people who did it should be caught and dealt

How To Use Scope Effectively?
dadioles replied to Alan Holmes's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
That is a really interesting thought. Frankly, I have no idea. I guess it is a case of try it and see. I do like it when people think "outside the box". It is the sort of issue that affects longer range shooting more than the shorter ranges experienced by air rifle users where the limited power tends to dictate that, rabbits for example, are only shot out to maybe 35 or 40 yards. Later in the week I shall have a play and try and put your theory to the test. -
Get a bloody grip. And yes, that is exactly the sort of stupid comment that will mean that in very few years air rifles in England will have to be licensed. Open your eyes and like it or not the country is full of people who want to ban guns and save wildlife, no matter how badly informed and misguided their views may be. In case you wondered.... I am no fan of Herons. The damn things cleaned out my pond of fish too.

Over The Limit Brand New Guns..?
dadioles replied to Skot Ruthless Teale's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Different pellet weights and types will chrono differently in the same gun. If you are unlucky enough to have your gun seized, the police will fire a variety of pellets and record the readings. It is up to you to make sure that no pellet enables your gun to exceed 12ftlbs. It is not good enough to claim that the pellet you currently use is within limits. All pellet types / weights have to remain within limits. -
The holes in your wall suggest that the groups are not quite as tight as you try to make us believe.

This is not a case of the justified shooting of a heron because it is being a major pest. It sounds more like an idiot with a gun getting some sad satisfaction from killing a large bird. The bottom line is that what happened is illegal and brings all shooters into disrepute, threatening our legal and responsible activities. Potentially quite a number of offences will have been committed, not least of all armed trespass. Shooting Herons is in itself an offence punishable by fines or imprisonment. The death of the heron has also rather upset the original poster who was deriving som

How To Use Scope Effectively?
dadioles replied to Alan Holmes's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
It may not be strictly true but in reality first adjust the eyepiece so that your cross hairs are in perfect focus then leave that alone, it will never need to be altered for your eyesight. Now you can think of the parallax adjustment as a means of bringing the target into sharp focus. Something for you to try, it does vary from scope to scope. Pick a distance to zero at, say 25 yards. With the scope on maximum magnification shoot a few pellets and hopefully get a tight group. Now change to minimum magnification and do the same. If you are lucky the pellets will land in the same spot and -
Wow..... Sorry kev1986 but you are talking out of your bottom and I sincerely hope that novices just coming into shooting are able to see that what you say is nonsense and misleading. The .22lr and .17hmr are quite different and compliment each other. Basically the .22lr is quiet and good from 10 yards to 75 yards and the .17hmr is rather noisier but shoots brilliantly from 50 yards to 130 yards. I don't care how much you practice. They are different guns for different jobs. No way can a .22lr do the job of a .17hmr. or vice versa. There is a big overlap in capability but they both hav

That's the second or third time I've seen the word "branchers" used and it's not one I have come across before. What is a "brancher"? I assume it is a bird sitting on a branch, either a pigeon coming in to roost or a young fledgling coming out of a rooks nest or similar. Please enlighten me..... Thanks.

Best .22 pellets for getting rabbits?
dadioles replied to Laurence_13's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
I agree with the previous post by NoM8s Shot placement is vital with an air rifle as there is not enough force in the pellet to do much collateral damage. It is surprising how quickly a rabbit can react to the sound of a pellet (or .22lr sub) being fired and it can move a significant distance (half an inch is significant) between the pellet leaving the rifle barrel and hitting the target. That is another reason for not over reaching yourself and 50 yards is probably too far for many people. I like the statement "Draw a 1/4 inch circle and work out the maximum range you can hit -
Ballistic data charts can sometimes be quite accurate but there is no substitute for spending time in the field shooting at paper. I love my gadgets and playing with software but have never found anything that matches the trajectory of my own bullets using off the shelf data. Even when I input my own chronograph measurements the curves still need tweaking. The only way is to try several makes of ammunition, find the one that shoots through your gun the best, most accurate repeatable groups, then purchase a large quantity of that batch. Now choose a zero and get everything set up to be spot

Mentoring Condition - West Mercia
dadioles replied to Dagben77's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Rimmer You are playing on words but that is fair enough.... I rise to the challenge, it's fun. OK, Firearms are not illegal. Their existence is not against the law. Obvious! I said - "There is absolutely no right whatsoever to own and use firearms, they were made illegal in 1920." I should have said - "There is absolutely no right whatsoever to own and use firearms, that was made illegal in 1920." The difference between "bear arms" and "own arms" is also obvious and not worthy of comment. You stated: "The right to own firearms is fundamental. Consequently, while i -
Mentoring Condition - West Mercia
dadioles replied to Dagben77's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The right to own firearms is fundamental. Consequently, while it may be restricted in the case of particular individuals, within limits, it may not be removed on a collective basis. In particular, it is not a privilege to be granted or denied by governments. Thats the legal basis, taken from a political party web site. I don't know where you got that from Rimmer. We live in a Parliamentary Democracy, painful though that may be sometimes. There is absolutely no right whatsoever to own and use firearms, they were made illegal in 1920. It is possible, however, that if you have a "good -
Hello Kev As dixyhmr says, all you can do is offer an opinion based on experience. It is a bit off topic but one of my CZ .22lr using SK Subs zeroed at 55 yards drops 12 inches at 120 yards and my other with night vision zeroed at 50 yards drops 14" at 120 yards. I do not use either at those distances. I am not good enough and the groups are too large. yards is about it for day and 60 at night. Rabbit head shots or chest if I am wobbly. My Anschutz .17hmr using Hornady 17gr V-Max zeroed at 100 yards shoots plus or minus less than half an inch from 30 to 110 yards and just und
