Shortening A Rimfire Barrel
dadioles replied to drakeshead gunner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
If you are going to use a moderator such as a SAK that screws onto the end, cut the barrel as short as possible, say 14 inches or whatever gives you an inch or so beyond the stock. If you want an "over barrel" type moderator such as DM80 you can leave the barrel a bit longer and still achieve the same overall length. Basically make it as short as you reasonably can, think in terms of 14 to 16 inches, no longer. -
Damage To Swift Moderator By Hmr Bullet - Update
dadioles replied to kenj's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Unburned grains suggests that possibly your bullets have got a bit damp. Another possibility is that the primer fired but there was too little powder in the bullet for it to fully combust as it was not packed tightly enough. I cannot think how a fault with your gun could cause this so it has to be bad ammunition. Incorrectly loaded or improperly stored. Returning the whole batch to the supplier seems sensible. In my experience of the hmr, the ammunition (I use Hornady) has proved to be extraordinarily reliable and consistent. -
Damage To Swift Moderator By Hmr Bullet
dadioles replied to kenj's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thats one of the problems...... nobody gets taught. Just get a firearms licence and go shooting learning as you go. Just read these forums to realise how misinformed and inexperienced most shooters are. No criticism intended and isn't it good that people read and post, even if it sometimes results in a bit of flak. -
Damage To Swift Moderator By Hmr Bullet
dadioles replied to kenj's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
First point is don't you think you should have asked yourself a few questions after what may have been the first misfire? It sound a bit negligent to have just carried on. That damage to your moderator was not caused directly by a bullet with a split case. Poor maintenance, lack of cleaning, badly fitted or faulty moderator or quite possible a bullet (or mud?) stuck in the barrel or moderator after a partial ignition is more likely. Are you really serious about re-using the moderator and making some new baffles or is this a wind up? For goodness sake a SAK or similar is adequate and -
Any Body Shooting Any Council Owned Property
dadioles replied to The one's topic in General Airgun Discussion
A lot of it is about who you know and being in the right place at the right time. It can take years to build up the right relationship. In my own case I know a number of councillors personally and they trust me. That is the bottom line, knowing you and trusting you. If it is a bigger council with quite a few "jobsworths" you probably don't stand a chance as all they want to do is cover their own backs and if there is a need for "pest control" they will use a commercial firm on the grounds that they are more "professional" and, in their eyes, it gives the council a degree of indemnity (r -
It is up to your employer, the owner of the business, to sort it out with the cat / dog owners. Slow and irritating but that is life. To be telling you to "shoot them on sight" is an ill thought out emotive response that, if you did, would land you in a whole lot of bother and if you tried the "I was following orders" excuse it would probably cost you your license, your employer a fine and possibly lose you your job. It may not be fair but strictly speaking it is not your problem.

Thats worth knowing, why is it that side focus is needed/better for night vision over one with no adjustment or having the adjustment on the end? Unless you have long arms, side focus is always better. It can also help with rangefinding.

Take a look at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/117794/security_leaflet.pdf It tells you pretty much all you need to know about secure firearm storage.

Friend Using My Firearm.......
dadioles replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You are quite correct, there are two versions of what is defined as "occupier" and as things stand it is up to the Chief Constable in your area to apply whichever definition they prefer. Until a case is brought in court, that is the what we have to deal with. I think it would be a pretty good defence, however, that the HO Guidance should be applied. Without deep pockets you do not want to be the test case! -
A Few Pictures, Zeroing My .22Lr
dadioles replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well done, you would expect your group to open up as the range increases. Your group at 75m is not tight enough for reliable and humane head shots on rabbits but that is not a criticism of your shooting just a limit of .22lr. At that point the .17hmr takes over very nicely. Do shoot some targets at close range, even as close as 10m. You never know what you are going to come across in the field and you could find yourself surprisingly off target. If you get a chance, still try other ammunition. Just purchase a single box to see how it works in your gun. Do not change the zero, it d -
.22Lr Subsonic And Supersonic Ammo
dadioles replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hopefully you cleaned it thoroughly to remove the protective grease and muck from the barrel before firing your first shot? My advice is to use subsonics but that is a personal decision. As has been stated many many times, purchase a box each of several makes of ammunition and see which gives the tightest group (is most accurate in your gun). Just shoot at a big piece of paper with a cross scribbled on it as a target set at 50 yards. It does not really matter where the bullets land on the target. Always aim at the centre of the cross for every shot no matter where it lands (as long -
Yes, thanks for the advice. It was good to see Roy Lupton using a .22lr against fox on this weeks Fieldsports Channel. I have had a camera setup for a couple of weeks in the hope that it will spot the fox and give me a regular pattern but that has not worked too well so far. A couple of images of the fox but it is not working to a timetable! Foxpro Wildfire arrives tomorrow, worth a go. I quite like my gadgets. I should Know over the next week or so if I have spent the money wisely. Baiting with catfood seems a good idea too.

I do not shoot foxes but things are changing and it is now getting personal. My chickens were attacked a few weeks ago but it was a young fox and it got tangled with one of the chickens in the electric fence and the chicken survived as the "shocked" fox ran off when I appeared in an interestingly semi naked state at 4am in response to the screaming chickens. The surviving chicken is now hailed as Dora the guard chicken. Over the past two days a fox has taken my neighbours pet guinea pigs and the last of their chickens. I did sit out with my .22 rimfire for a couple of very early morn

16In V 20In V 22In In Rim Fire
dadioles replied to Craig83's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Aaah youths today.... I remember 6". "I'm going secondhand first" reminds me of the Dave Allen learn to tell the time sketch (look for it on youtube) The small hand is the first hand the next is the big hand and the third hand is the second hand..... -
Like so many aspects of firearms legislation it seems to be up to your local police force and even to the mood of your firearms officer on the day. There is no legal minimum time, in law, before a licence can be "open". Some forces may use 3 years as a rule of thumb and others the five years to renewal and even then only if you ask. If you have a reasonable number of permissions, can persuade the police that you are mature, safe, and experienced and above all are being disadvantaged by having a closed ticket (missing shooting opportunities...) then write them a polite letter outlin

16In V 20In V 22In In Rim Fire
dadioles replied to Craig83's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Issues of barrel length have been covered before and a Google search will pull up all sorts of information. In the case of rimfire, broadly speaking, all the "bang" has been used up in the first 12" or so. There are no advantages in having a barrel longer than, say, 14" to 16". If anything, the extra barrel length will slow the bullet down due to friction. Longer barrels were an advantage (for rimfire) back in the days of fixed sights. The further the front sight was from the rear sight, the easier, and more accurate it was to aim the rifle. Not relevant to todays telescopic sights. -
Whats Your Longest Kill ?????
dadioles replied to gibbo1973's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Maybe a better question would have been. "What is the furthest distance you feel competent to shoot live quarry humanely?" -
I have both, the Combro and the F1. The Combro works fine with my (and other) sub 12ft lb air rifles but not with my rimfire. Obviously it only gives you results at the barrel and cannot be used down range. The F1 is more versatile and "interesting" as you can position it close to the muzzle or down range just in front of the target. It works with air rifle and rimfire. Frankly I like both devices. If I only had an air rifle the Combro would be enough. I do not have any of the addons for the F1 just the basic model but can see how they could be useful if you had a range to j

.17Hmr - Clean Barrel After Use Or Not?
dadioles replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It does not matter if they split or not. There are no safety issues and it does not seem to have any effect on the trajectory. You are not going to reload them so just don't worry about it. I have plenty of split cases, look and ye shall find. -
22 Lr Quick Question For You Guys????
dadioles replied to lampingking's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
To answer your question, I aim about an inch high when that close. Obviously every setup is different. Please spend an afternoon shooting targets set every 10 yards out to about yards (far enough for rabbits with a .22lr on subs) and then you will know exactly what your trajectory is. Follow Rimmers advice and you will be shooting into the ground rather below the rabbits feet, maybe he holds his gun upside down or relies on upwards deflection from a stone . -
Bore Snake = Rubbish? Or Is It Me?
dadioles replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I was "sold" a boresnake, used it once and decided it would do more damage than good. In my not so humble opinion (I don't do humble anymore) the only way to clean the .17hmr (or for that matter .22) is with a good quality rod, jag, patch and a bore guide. You spend good money buying a finely crafted gun with incredibly fine rifling and then yank a bit of string with a brillo pad embedded in it through a couple of times and think that is good enough........... My barrels are clean..... really clean...... and I do not have this nonsense about having to fire half a box of bullets before it sh -
I use SK subsonic .22lr (by LAPUA GmbH) in both of my CZ's. After trying a fair number of different types these were the most consistent and the most accurate. Unfortunately they were also at the upper end of the price bracket but I value accuracy and consistency above saving a couple of quid. I am now on my fifth brick (2000+ rounds). All barrels are different, you just have to try as many different makes of ammo as possible and then buy lots of what worked best and stick to it.

So, if I am reading this right. You go out and set up your zero. The rifle then shoots well for that session with reasonable accuracy. The gun then rests up for a few days and when you go out again the zero has moved. That sounds like your scope or mounts to me. Are your scope turrets adjusted anywhere near their extremes? It is certainly a good idea to wind your turrets from one extreme to the other and then back to the centre. Shim the mounts if needed so that when you zero your rifle the turrets are not too far from their central position. Are your scope mounts properly fitted and n

.22 Allowed But .17Hmr Not Allowed
dadioles replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My guess is that your FEO has probably never fired any rimfire and does not have first hand knowledge. It may be that he is a shotgun man, or equally possibly has little or no first hand experience of shooting at all!
