hi all, After a stressful week, what better than to seat in a high seat on the most stunning day, relaxing and just watching the world turn. After a couple of hours the deer obviously felt I was chilled out enough and two of them decided to give themselves up... Magic day. Ben

Hi all, A few years ago a keeper in Oxfordshire had two dogs stolen from professionally built locked kennels yards away from his house. The terrible time he had locating them and dealing with the theft gave rise to www.DogwatchAlert.com, a web site dedicated to reducing rural crime in the Thames Valley area. The site is a must read for anyone who owns gundogs or God forbid, has one stolen. And if you live in the Thames Valley, your eyes and ears could be helping prevent other people suffering the same loss. It would be great if all of us could give Dogwatch Alert our support - I h

i guess if you can home make, no problem, and i have seen some great ones locally and in Northumberland, but when you start buying commercial ones, you get what you pay for. just thinking whether i would like to be at the top of bendy chinese aluminium with a loaded rifle - don't think so! I have also seen a couple of home made seats where I was a guest in Scotland that had seen a bit of weather - let's just say that i would rather sit on the top strand of a barbed wire fence - at least i wouldn't have as far to fall. The real question comes if you invite someone else to sit in one - l

Two nice Muntjac to start the day...
benhunter replied to benhunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
cheers - I'm not a writer, but i wish i could write about it properly - its just something of a tradition with us, and it was the perfect end to a perfect morning - you know that feeling as you drive home - where the world suddenly feels right? it's the feeling that is impossible to describe to someone who doesn't shoot, so the best thing to do is kick back with a cup of tea and enjoy the moment before saturday morning kids football brings reality crashing back in. Besides - 8am is just a tiny bit too early for the hip flask for me...! -
try these - reeves high seats and a high quality lightweight aluminium portable ones... reeves high seats

you can skin it, remove as much meat as possible, simmer it for a an hour with the antlers out of the water, then if you have a power washer, use it to blast everything else off. try to get the brains out before you simmer it and apparently if you add some washing powder it helps (but not washing up liquid). if you want to really get carried away try this : http://www.ehow.com/how_4547449_boil-skull-european-mount.html b.

Two nice Muntjac to start the day...
benhunter replied to benhunter's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Thanks Flytie, There were two of us shooting this morning (I should have said before we got one each!) and we were talking about Muntjac on the way home and how you can sit in a high seat as many times as you like watching the place where you 'know' they are going to appear, and see nothing, but turn around and there will be one behind you - I am not saying that Muntjac have magic powers and materialise out of thin air - OK, maybe I am... Muntjac are great animals, full of attitude, but a high seat is definitely the way to go. Not that I can give much advice - I am fairly new to all t -
A stunning morning - absolutely still, no frost and a good high cloud cover. The wood came to life with pheasants making the kind of confident noise they only make once the season has finished. An old dog fox appeared first, but as today it was important to get a deer for demonstrating carcass handling in a DSC1 course(not by me, i only did my DSC1 last year), he lived to see another day. The first Muntjac fell soon after day-break, the second a few minutes later. A perfect morning, especially after a bacon roll and a cup of tea.

Hi all, Having just had my Whisky Moment, I thought I should just share a bit of joy. As members I have spoken to know, I am pretty new to stalking and today shot my first Roe, two lovely does, within 30 seconds of each other and happily both were dead where they fell and recovered easily. Why are Roe so special? I dont know, but they are and I have waited a little while for it. I know it felt pretty special on the way home, which is why after getting them into a friend's chiller, there had to be a Whisky Moment - well three to be precise... It hasn't been a bad week, on Tuesday I

That's a cracker - I need to get back in a seat - just posted pics of the last sit a few days ago, where the doe didn't show but a buck was just taking the proverbial... ben

Hi all, I was in a high seat a few days ago thinking to myself, where on earth are all the Muntjac hiding and had come to the conclusion that like me, they should have been somewhere warm, when this Roe Buck walked onto a ride about 130 yards away. He lingered there while I glassed him for a minutes - all the while wishing his little shotgun cartridge antlers were a figment of my imagination, but they were there so I left him alone and he drifted back into the woods. About twenty minutes later he popped out about 20 yards from me and spent the next 5 minutes playing around in fron

Just come back from the best day out shooting - one of those days that you just know are going to stay with you forever. It all started well when the first shot of the day two guns to my left brought down a strong flying woodcock. My day started with a left, right, left again from my first three shots - actually that should be over, under, over with my gun.... the first drive was all pheasant for me, then on the second, fast partridge with a good wind behind them. drive after drive (six in total) some really great birds flew - and some fell. the last drive was the best of the day, plac

Hi all, There is a competition for a Harkila Pro Hunter Jacket on the new site for Mercury Rifles for anyone signing up on the email list. (www.MercuryRifles.com). Because the stalking rifles from Mercury Rifles are brand new, I persuaded the distributor (Reeves - the same people that do the high seats) to do a competition on the site to get people interested. It is open to all, even if you don't have an FAC. Big thanks for permission to post this - I wouldn't have put it here without checking with admin first - I helped with the site I want to see these guys get a good response -

CHARITY CLAY SHOOT now up dated !!!!!!
benhunter replied to frogflyer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
hi, for events in london, try Claudio at A1 Shooting Ground (www.a1sg.co.uk) Andy Castle at West London Sporting Targets (www.ACSportingTargets.com) both of those are a good price and very approachable - if you want to do something expensive then West London or Royal Berks would be good - but very expensive! but do be aware that there are lots of expensive clay shoots for this cause and you need to make sure you get committed numbers before you book. there are a few grounds in Bucks and Oxfordshire but i dont know them so well I live in Bucks and work in London, so count -
wow! i have just been reading up on all the proposed changes - i hadnt followed this before i did the course, but i guess i am now glad i have done the course - i did actually enjoy it. How will they deal with the old school stalker? the guy who has 40 years of shooting under his belt, who goes to scotland twice a year, but has no intention of starting a load of exams late in life - what a massive loss to the Scottish economy those people would be - they spend thousands. I dont have a problem with making sure poeple are safe (myself included, which is why i didnt mind doing the course)

hi all, having just passed my DSC1 today, i am obviously very happy... one thing i know for sure, i know a hell of a lot more about species recognition, food safety and good practice than i did before. I have been on a few stalks with others and shot a CWD myself, but I really do feel now that i know more, it has built my confidence and i hope my knowledge, and i cant argue with the benefit of that. I would hope that because of the course i will now be a better stalker - even if i stop myself making one mistake, taking one bad shot, or even just process a deer better for my own foo

Hi everyone, As this seems like a friendly forum i just wanted to say hello and introduce myself... Although i used to shoot with air rifles as a kid and rifles in cadets, I only started shooting game when I got my shotgun licence four years ago. Various friends took me out rabbit shooting with a .22 and this year i got my FAC (.22 and .243). Two weeks ago i shot my first deer (a Chinese Water Deer). It would be fair to say i have got the bug. Although i am sure i will post a few things in the future, i just want to say that i couldn't have got back into shooting (and hunting) with
