  1. Bad idea. Many have walked down that road and it typically leads to ruined lines, wasted time and animals which can't do the job. People indulging their curiosity in regards to this breeding always seems to be to the detriment of the resulting kits. Do what is known to produce the best results. The best workers bred to other great workers. Robustness, working ability are the only things that matter- 'novelty' and colour don't mean a damn out in the field!
  2. don't do it mate not worth it in any way. Remember, people developed the ferret from the polecat for a reason- because they are better for ferreting!
  3. Don't even think of breeding them until they've proven themseleves to be good workers mate and colour should not be a priority
  4. See if you can track down a Leders tanning kit mate, I was given one and I've tanned a number of pelts. They turn out great.
  5. That's poor form, that. I'm along the same country road everyday and saw a shot hare tied up on one of the fences by it's back legs. No need for it at all...I stopped over and liberated the hare from the fence- can't pass up free ferret grub. If i's edible, eat it.
  6. I always gut mine, otherwise the mess gets strewn around their court and it stinks to high heaven. Also, most worms harbour in the intestines.
  7. Agree 100% mate! I laugh at the folks local to me that think stinkers have to be vicious and half wild to work well-have fun with that, lads! I'll just crack on with my 'soft' ferrets that don't try to take my fingers off when I pick them up.
  8. Good write up, I find starting kits very enjoyable. Bag size isn't so important, unless you have a lot of mouths to feed or are doing it as a job. Always nerve wracking to hear th rabbits charging up the tube towards you, usually happens to me while I'm dispatching a netted rabbit and trying to get the hole covered up again.
  9. Probably not a bad idea to have a chat with your neighbours if you are on good terms with them as well
  10. Gut instincts are there for a reason, keep a close eye on your dogs. ATB
  11. The neutered lad should be good to go in two or so weeks, the v-hob I would hold back for at least six. Glad it all went well
  12. If things are really dire, make a paste from meat, dry food, egg yolk and heavy cream, it puts the weight back on very fast and is good for jills which are in kit or have had them.
  13. Bit of food before work, bit of a wait if the fert happens to kill under. A kill in isn't so big a deal, I frequently ferret warrens where digging is impossible [not just hard...impossible] and most times it won't take long for the stinker to lose interest and move on. If the fert kills a rabbit and gets stuck behind it in a tube, block every hole and revisit the warren everyday until the fert has eaten through/dug around the bunny. Do that and you'll get him back
  14. Well done, would be happy with nine. Was out today, had a massive bag of three. Ah well, can't catch what isn't there, was good to be out at any rate.
  15. Always love your pics mate, that little black dog is grand.
  16. Nice start, always good to warm the ferts up before launching into it.
  17. I have never found the hobs to be chatty that much , laid back & casual maybe, perhaps the chatting is a female thing like us human females It's been my experience also, however this hob really challenges the theory I'll have to work out how to get some video of him and put it on.
  18. That's nowt, I dropped 300 on my favourite jill to get a tumour taken out
  19. I have a big albino hob who is always having a talk, never shuts up once out of his court. Can even hear him underground in shallow sets, moving from tube to tube.
  20. Thankfully no, one rabbit lasts my group of three two days, the other solitary ferrets will get half a rabbit each and that lasts about two days each also.
  21. I feed them guts out [they just drag them around the court, what a mess] but with fur left on.
  22. If I want to really put weight on a fert I grind up chicken, rabbit, eggyolk until it is a paste, then add a bit of heavy cream [not the pre-whipped stuff] and water it down a bit until it is easy for the stinker to eat. I've brought a few ferts back from the brink of death when they would eat nowt else but that. If it is in really rough shape, then keep on as you have been doing and wake it up for a feed every so often. Cat food...personally I think you would be better off with the meats and fats they would normally get, but if you really wanted you could get a good quality cat biscuit w
