If Deerhounds Aren't What They Were

sorry must dissagree with 'kranky'.........just physics?............ a big dog with bigger stride is quicker ?...........does that mean a borzoi will be faster than a whippet?..........does the speed of that stride not count?.........have you ever watched a wee non ped at the lurcher racing ?................even historically how many waterloo cup winners were bigger types? ...........surely 'physics' will dictate a bigger dog with longer legs and more weight to mobilise must have slower movements ?.......is the big size increase in deerhounds (some books say 5 or 6" in height in the last cent -
belles limping after hitting a hedge last night, young lads shouting for a clean school shirt, wifes cars failed its mot, grass needs cut, i've got to temper a knife blade for a guy who's mumping about the time it's taken, pregnant daughter finds a drama everywhere and i'm fecking nightshift............................. ffs get permission or walk

5ft is a good jump especially for a small dog

for sure, had them out for a wee walk this morning to kick off any stiffness from last night and.......... shock, surprise for the 1st time in months there was water flowing in the burn -
seen it once, hard pressed into a wee two hole run through, bolted it 1st time to finish the run
-
it'll all depend on your ground and game, for me i prefer a wee bit of size and substance

hope some of the non believers and numpties are reading this thread a chap takes on a pedigree unknown, non worked adult dog, he has obviously put in lots of time and effort and it looks like she has come good for him bigtime a chap gives up his time and experience, puts up with the dreaded drive and helps out a fellow hunter 6 pages in and not a gripe or any sign of the green eyed monster only positive comments well done to all concerned

i think its more a case of what suits your personality, hyper terrier bred types aint for me, collie x's can be just as obsessed with a good habit, i think it would be a good idea to make a few pals, get yourself out with a few types doing the stuff you want, on your type of ground and make your own mind up
-
one thing i think the collie x does offer it doesn't make the same mistake twice, when jazz was younger she's knocked herself out and torn open her chest, her drive was fierce, i was scared to take her lamping but whether its maturing or learning or maybe both............down side to being tough is and i don't know if its just her or whether its a collie x trait but even when she's hurt she doesn't tend to show it ......if she whines or limps i know its for real
-
looking through some pics to exemplify it and this shows it best i think.....but breadth of chest is as important as depth, plenty of engine room as they say.......this hare was shot and retrieved in daylight in compliance with the current legislation
-
maybe a mix of both worlds is the way to go
-
i suppose the theory is you get a pup somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 hopefully getting the best of both, whilst agreeing in principal with wales1234 worker to worker, litters are very rare producing this cross and tend to be one off's with no previous history with the breeder being an owner looking for a replacement for his older dog, commercially bred pups of this type are bred from a greyhound dam ( by a reverse 3/4) often repeat matings and the sires ability to throw certain traits will be well known and my experience and logic reckon that this tends to throw racier faster types but as has b

the way i read that mate, with only 1 pic.....love me love my dog took on a whole new meaning.............nice flip flops by the way

maybe just unlucky so far, when i got belle her owner had them on here, lots of history pics etc and really struggled to shift quality pups .......and she hasn't turned out too shabby..........if your after a cross platts bred gafers smart dog and the cracking 1st x's holly and bruce are cookland bred ...........i'd guess theyre only a phone call away -
looking well smart..........the only thing i don't like about them is..........theyre on the wrong side of the pond
-
sorry im having a laugh aimed at another member whose photography skills are legendary by the way nice pup hows it bred?
-
are you a student of the paulus photography school ?

some folks will want different types / sizes..........the chap that walks woodland and copses will rate agility brains and tenacity over size and speed ..........the chap that walks the hillside and moorland will favour size speed and stamina, both may like similar traits like toughness, biddability, coat, etc thats why i think any kind of breeding by commitee would be doomed to failure -

i'm not convinced its all down to size, i've seem some belting biggies, i think proportion and balance are just as important -
youve only had him a week .......be cool make him your pal first, then try something with your scent like socks, biggest tips for retrieving....... make it fun and have patience

don't entirely agree with a bunch of guys getting organised though, everyone going to have different needs. ideas, quarry, ground etc so their going to want different qualities in a dog.......................the kc are an organised bunch and theyve done a lot of good........maybe its the loners who are honest with themselves that are the way forward
