  1. all down to the pup imo give it loads of different experiences and it'll tell you all pups mature at different ages
  2. choker mate. youv'e gave him a great life looks to have been a wee cracker atb
  3. nature versus nurture is always going to prompt differing views. when my bitch turns a rabbit away from a fence before striking its easy to see the unworked collie in her, when she's at full stretch on open land closing on her bunny it's easy to see the unworked greyhound in her, when shes working with the longnet and turns back into the field when she sees a rabbit tangle in the net it's not as easy to see where she gets that! or is it?
  4. if i'm getting it right it's ok to buy a pup from say a genuine 1st cross collie grey put to a genuine 1st cross deerhound grey (or whatever) as long as the parents are working even though the 4 grandparents may never have seen a green field, but it's not the done thing to get a 1st cross pup as the parents weren't workers even though the pup could have all the right attributes and instincts.
  5. lamp performed ace, the head was a bit bigger and seemed to catch the wind a bit but it was blowin a hoolie, stronger brighter beam seemed to hold them squatted longer, 1st 4 never got to run, one of them must have been caught 6ft in the air it jumped when it saw jazz but she jumped better , 11 out of 14 runs in an hour and a half, nae wind here tonight just frost
  6. we all hate the stuff, like you say not too bad should heal well. looking at the forecast up here anyway frosts are on the way and it could have happened last week and you'd have missed all the recent good nights atb
  7. silly talk, its all in the blood, you breed from pets you get pets.all the lads at the top of there game have one thing in common,a good line of dogs behind them. if it's 'all in the blood' it surely doesn't matter whether the blood works or not corse it does how do you know whats in the blood if its not tested an if inferior dogs turn up then surely they have to be culled no good breeding off something you think is in the BLOOD if you havent tested it so hypothetically you wouldn't take a lurcher pup bred out of top honcho's unraced unworked sister I took a pup out of West

  11. anyone can buy a greyhound pup from parents that haven't seen game for generations, rear it like a lurcher, teach the basics recall, jump, retrieve etc. and it'll be bowling over hares easily in no time. ive seen greyhounds straight off the track mauling foxes or pulling down roe (pre ban of course) with no experience or hunting background. an experienced owner or a willing and honest beginner with the cohonies to stick with their mutt and not sell it at the first setback is far more important than working parents
  12. You do realise they are actors? what? but it's in colour i thought that meant it was real
  13. i raced them myself from the early 's had a couple of champions but they also worked most game day and night my favourites were always bred more to the greyhound side and were fairly laid back cant remember having too much foot trouble they even came along over the rocks for a days fishing and seemed to handle walking over mussel beds and the like when collecting them or digging white rag. ive had allsorts of running dogs over the last 40 yr or so and although i personally favour certain types or breeds i'm firmly to each their own and keep an open mind to what other peeps like. i'm only tryi
  14. getting this back to topic, these non working dogs, showed intelligence knowing where the line was and their fire and determination is well known, some of the dogs youve mentioned were bred into lines of lurcher does this make them any the less for their non working background
  15. spent over 300 quid on new kit yesterday all fully charged now, hold me back!!
  16. Bob, I was racing Non-Peds in the 60's & 70's, and still go along to watch now; but your'e right, and it's not just in Scotland.... to see handicaps here in the North East of England with only 6 to 12 dogs is a shame. In the old days it was a magnificent acheivment to win a R.Ch, there was that many dogs ! But now, it's fair to say some get their R.Ch's on a bye !! I ran at the Rising Sun in The British Open Championship, and there would be well over 100 dogs; running a heat, quarter final , semi final and final to get amongst the winners, but at Cambois Open a few days ago, some classes
  17. maybe a litter bred from your brothers bitch with the pups given scottish homes would keep another 6 or 8 racers interested. and to get back on thread with you having a working / racing dog from non working parents and paddys sired god knows how many lurchers does his background and breeding make his pups any better or worse?
  18. agree theres nothing set in stone, in fighting theres ALWAYS someone harder, in racing theres ALWAYS someone faster. Speed isn't the be all and end all, i've seen enough spaniels and collies catch hares to prove that. I've said it before genuine worker to worker isn't always possible. How many bull crosses come from bull terriers that can throw a bull? How many saluki crosses have parents that have run down gazelle after a mega course? Or deerhound crosses that come from dogs that bring a 10 or12 stone stag to bay? Why can't folk work with what they have and get the best out of it, through pr
  19. patience and practise, lots of daytime recall practise especially in rabbitty type areas with lots of scent, ive seen shock collars working with really stubborn dogs but yours is still a pup i'd leave that out just now no need good luck
  20. she looks fine to me mate, i have a collie x that would put on weight passing by a butchers and a deerhound x that could eat for scotland and keep her figure. truth is different x's have varying builds and metabolism's i wouldn't worry about the guy at all
  21. i dont think youll be dissapointed, whipxgrey has loadsa experience here his paddy bred by so what on here has been to lots of lurchers from wee beddy whippets thru saluki crosses and up to pure deerhounds incuding bull terriers and bull crosses. i'm sure if you pm'ed him he'd give you genuine advice. he follows the progress of the litters as much as possible and i know some of the pups are performing REALLY well.
  22. my jazz is tweedle dum x bubbles and she's 3 1/2, she's ace fun out for a walk bushing takes allsorts decent at ferreting retrieves shot hares and rabbits
  23. I knew Henry Dobie, the man could sure get a dog in condition another couple of crackers he had were Painted lady (grew) and Jungle runner. I think jungle runner was also a grew. saw painted lady win an open on the bends at thornton, best thing about it was the way a false favourite was created by a bluff bet on a heavywieght with a great time (stop the world i think) the bookies were in tears pmsl. and your right with the conditioning thing like i said earlier sometimes the owner handler makes the dog
  24. i think that for the racers when you use a stud like this on a smaller bitch if you get 1 pup thats small enough its often a belter
