    You're right, 'Roxy ! I still go to the "dogs", (Whippet Racing), on a saturday morning, and get into arguments about 55lb, half x greyhounds being called Whippets !! My usual reposte is "there has been smaller Greyhounds won the Waterloo Cup " !! But I still love it; it's dedicated dog men and women breeding, training and racing outstanding dogs !! So fair play to them ! Cheers. can i add charti, not just the men and women but whole families grannies fed them, kids walked them etc. without a doubt it's the best family orientated sport bar none, a weekend at the championships or one of

    spoke to bob, apparently 1st crosses are still allowed to register as are the pups from two 1st crosses, a 1st or 2nd cross isn't allowed to mate a greyhound for registering pups, theyr'e doing this in order to lessen the greyhound influence i believe, in my day racing breeding didn't matter if it was smooth, whippetlike and under 32lb it was fine

    i think its a lot to do with time and effort put into a pup, many also bond better with the missus who feeds and tends while us hunter gatherer, provider men are at work, in an ideal world i'd spend lots of time with the litter whatever age and the pup will probably pick me

    my 3yr old granddaughter was heartbroken when she came to see 'her' baby blackbirds in their nest in grandads garden, she watched them daily since the eggs were laid, put out scraps for mum and dad only to find some poxy cat had felt like a late night supper, it's now time for the cat to pay the fiddler, it'll be on private land (where the dogs live), the cat will be trespassing and not under control

    if 'a' is by your side and 'b' is the rabbit I think they'd be fine in the field, whip / grey on here rabbits his 5 days most weeks and if he's not racing at the weekends his old man (very old man eh bill) is a gamekeeper up in the glens and he has access to some great hunting land with lots of game and a lack of nose or stamina doesn't seem to be a problem

    they all mature at different ages i'm a great believer in she'll be what she'll be just enjoy her and go with it

    surely a sprinter (maybe up to 325m) is going to get on terms with quarry quicker then the rest of the lurcher (the saluki, collie etc) will take over, also conditioning for stamina imo would help a sprinter more than conditioning a stayer for speed

    i'm not a fan of the kc either but, as non peds and kc whippets come from the same beginnings many moons ago as the non peds clearly outperform the peds on the racetrack at least it could be argued that they have already spoiled the breed, they do breed truer to type cosmetically ie coat, shape size etc but are they that important I'm a big fan of both types, and have owned about half a dozen Non-Peds, albeit many years ago. Yes, they both have common roots, but the Non-Ped has had so much Greyhound in them over the years, and the Ped has stayed relatively pure, (apart from a few cheats

    picking up on what country joe said on the ballyregan bob topic about him and scurlogue champ being virtual non starters as stud dogs producing very little of quality, does this mean that in our world worker to worker is best or are we better having a better understanding of the genetic make up of our dogs and looking further than the fastest or the best worker?

    my buddy whip / grey's computer is not well so he's been on the phone to me re this topic, according to him a few of the coursing guys at the time 'bob' was racing went to his father 'ballyheigue moon' in order to get the bloodlines, so maybe this is where the confusion comes from

    in my earlier post on this topic i blamed some breeders and as a fan ive did a bit of googling. some breeders and the commercial side of things do have a lot to answer for but out of the first 20 breeders i checked out only 1 mentioned height and in some of the pics many were obviously over sized. i can understand if your into showing breeding the best to the best would be the way to go so the judges (presumably regulated by the kennel club) have got to be in the frame also as it is they who are putting oversize specimens up as the best, the breed standard states ideal sizes as 181/2 inches f

    i think that would be my first choice if i could find a worker lots out there mate bigland boy seems popular and whip / grey on here has one and i know his rabbits every day cos its on my permission ( watch out for the mantraps bob) and paddy (he was bred by sowhat on here out of jack the lad) has thrown well to a variety of bitches his latest litter are to a wheaten cross bitch and they look real nice, i believe all 9 pups were spoken for at two days old thats gotta say something.     i dare say one would suit you very well mate. im very much looking forward to seeing them at work. whether your a fan of the kc whippet, non ped or lurcher is this not what the hunting life should be about guy's with experience helping others well done

    maybe to reduce size a wee bit or to increase agility or tighten up conformation and feet or make them faster with better early pace etc could go on, no mystery here

    remember guys the whippet began as a wee cross bred rabbiter / racer of the poor man, there perhaps was greyhound blood and terrier blood in them, probably a lot like the non ped / hard blood of today where there is no thought of showring prowess, stud fee or looks only performance breeding the best to the best the fastest to the fastest, nobody thought of ear shape or tail carriage or whether they were a bonny colour. in my opinion the downfall of the whippet is the attitude of breeders who rate kc standards and conformation over performance and where the kerching ££££ of the till is more imp

    gotta be collie x's for me, they've got it all....maybe not like a grew on bowling greens or a saluki or d/h cross on big land or the determination of a terrier x,collie x's are tough as old boots though and i'd rather hang about while mine stalked a bunny than take a more instant aim and fire type to the vets regular, without wanting to offend anyone as a rule (and there made to be broken) they are imo consistently better retrievers an absolute must for a good rabbiter
