3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Collie X Bearded Border
birddog replied to ash227@ymail.com's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
wuyang you could have been describing my bitch when she was a little younger i dont know whether its the border input or just an experience thing but her early drive seems to have been tempered a little in the past 2 yr or so but she has knocked herself out and ploughed through a barbed wire fence hidden in a hedge its just as well the rough coat hides scars, i believe borderscots smart dog finn is similarily driven.....i know greyhounds themselves are driven but the beardie does add something for sure............oh and she's just as chilled out at home everyones pal for a biscuit -

Thanks for that mate Interesting read Beast...I`ve got a 1/4 border 1/4 beardie greyhound out of Hancocks mr jones . I`ve met David Hancock but never owned a Hancock lurcher ....she was a gift off a friend and she is a very handy bitch marking /ferreting is 100% true. I have always kept border collie greyhound crosses I don't really see any beardie characteristics in her ...do you think that 1/4 beardie would show any ? the jones bitch i knew was smooth coated and could have been a border cross to look at, bit taller at 24" and perhaps a stronger head but really no -
Do They Have To Be From Working Stock ????? (Lurcher Pups)
birddog replied to lampingking's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
this could be a laugh.........you've opened a can of worms here bud but if the bloods there it don't matter for me if they're workers or not.......how many 1st x's are off working parents ? how many bull's work ? most greyhounds used are from the track......the traditional quarry of some other breeds is strictly verboden so can they really be classed as workers ? worker to worker sounds ideal but a working greyhound x collie mated to a working greyhound x bedlington could theoretically throw a collie x bedlington type........i suppose theres less chance of that the more sighthound you have -

at that age i have mine in public parks, game fairs, lurcher shows, boot sales, on the beach with lots of dogwalkers etc, everywhere i could think of where they'd get new sights, scents and sounds.......lots of socialisation but i made sure they were never overstretched and had a wee retreat / shelter if they wanted it, they'd also tag along on wee local toilet walks in the local woods again lots of familiarisation with scents, birds, stepping over fallen branches and the like

do your homework, get out with some guys and see a bit, find out what you like and don't like .........as for choice, a real headache and you'll get a hundred differing views but all the pro's mutt's have a sprinkling of collie

you must be a proud man -
or a business opportunity for the nts..............a couple of residential caravans, an ad on here or the cmw.....................how many guys would pay for a couple of nights lamping here ? edited to add fao alex salmond..........this could be a bigger tourist draw than nessie or edinburgh castle
-
16,000 bunnies thats going to be more than a wee jolly or a nights lamping...........cage traps, longnets, ferrets by the score, insured and responsible manpower, rimfires, shotguns, box traps, portacabins, gamedealers willing and able for big numbers and a whole lot of hard work
-
potential for becoming a top topic..............one thing thats come to mind with all this nostalgia.........my kids (and now grandkids) will never experience some of the crazy fun and experiences we had then..............my first waterloo cup not an anti in site, pushing a daytime roebuck out of a coppice and seeing a fair test of dog and quarry, a january hare making a fool out of good dogs without having to look over your shoulder...............and these are just some of the legit stuff ................30 or 40 yrs on standing on corners, smoking weed and x boxes seem more acceptable to soc

all depends what your after.......there are breeders of specific x's, occasionally on here there is an odd pup from a lurcher to lurcher mating avaliable, keep your ear to the ground and stick to your guns if you know what your after

3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Collie X Bearded Border
birddog replied to ash227@ymail.com's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
how old is it ? Around 9-10 months is this to young to be running it don't think your mates 'gone wrong'.....depends on the dog, its progress experience etc.......my jazz was very similar at that age although she'd taken a fair tally of feathered game, the 1st few daytime bunnies were dropped halfway back and she'd chase and catch them again, i like to think it was deliberate on her behalf so she could get another chase but it's probably a combination of soft mouth and not being entirely sure what to do with her catch...........at that age they're still youngsters learning, has she seen a -

my pal 'rake aboot' on here has delboys litter brother he may be worth talking to, my hancock bred bitch is 3/16th's beardie.......she can be stubborn or is that determined ? under a mountain of hair her skin feels thicker for sure, she's almost 6 and worked allsorts of ground and touch wood no bad foot probs so far, compared to border x's ive had she's more independant when hunting, thinks for herself... when she thinks she's right youve got to go with it and to be fair she's not often been wrong..........but who's to say your pup won't throw more to the border genes, your pup is an individu -
i see both sides here............i think its down to where you live, some guys are lucky and live in low risk areas, some guys live where theres lots of dogs and lots of risks, if you have some land with little or no risk of infection i can't see to much harm in introducing a pup to a variety of situations and stimuli, obviously under control and not overtaxing a young pup........personally i try to get them out n about as young as possible but i'm also in the camp of a little patience paying dividends when it comes to entering to quarry

started with a collie x nearly 40 yrs ago, still got one but had a wee bit of variety here and there, often with a little deerhound somewhere in the mix ..............'before salukis' though, there one of the oldest types, theres not much before them

good to see any dog back after an injury.......worrying for all of us.....onwards and upwards
-
ditto...........even daytime hares (preban of course) this guy lived in an old railway carriage and relied on this dog to provide for him
-
marillions litter was tops, his brother raced up here..... racing in those days was the best, i couldn't handle the cheap miners welfare nights now though
-
a cracking bitch liked her loads, her owner was very knowledgable a true gent, did you race or work your dog ? my bitch at the time pure genius took all sorts of game as well as racing
-
i believe the greyhound was called goodnight nurse, the bitch i raced against was megs music, by him out of a greyhound milicent, if your just into the bloodlines both the bwra and ngrc have online databases
