What's the best type of lurcher for catching rabbits.
birddog replied to Dranny GLC's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Fair play mate, the best dog we had as a kid was a collie x on the rabbits was great round here, only talking about her last week to an old mate great memories. As long as you enjoy em mate that's all that matters really, I know where your coming from on the everyday/ night hunter ( which not many are) and I don't think my beddy whippet would be the dog for that. ATB Kev again just an opinion .....maybe there are more everyday/night hunters than most think as they'll be the type to keep themselves to themselves -
fit?...... she looks stunning, makes ours look like the wee potlicker we know her to be lol, the amount of folk that have asked me if there was going to be a repeat mating and sadly we know that can't happen RIP stan....... all the pups that we know have went to working homes seem to be doing well

possibly it was kevin that said a blue smooth bitch 25" went to a farmer and was doing well hunting the fields
-
cheers jan, she's well tidy eh, she looks a good size and solid made, do you know if she went to a working home? i was hoping kevin could get some of the smooth blue bitch that went to the farmer by all accounts she's doing well, there also a couple that came up to scotland that we can't trace, it's good to get all this background ta muchly

Im in the same boat as you, but wanted a dog with a rough coat, pup's nearly 6 months now, guards the house, excellent with the kids, should be ready next year or some work, shes 1st cross Beardy/Greyhound, 22 and about 14kg, still some growing to do, and were very happy with her How did you make sure you got a rough haired dog, is it just the bearded collie that will make rough haired pups if its crossed with a greyhound.....very confused and new to the dog side of hunting........... if your after a smooth coated collie x look at the ad in cmw......typp ratchers 'arri' over a greyhound. -

jeez guy's i have fun with my collie x and i'm not a pro hunter, ive kept and raced whippets for years (they worked a bit too ) ive had beddy x's, i'm definately not putting anyones type or favourite down in any shape or form. what i'm getting at is after 40yrs in the game i favour collie x's for the rabbiting game, look at the amount of rabbits (and other game) the minshaw guy's collie x's put in the bag. the pro's guy's who need dogs that can do it day after day night after night use collie x's look around there are lots of examples. collie x's have tougher constitutions, recover well, etc -
20 sounds a reasonable guesstimate but don't get hung up on size (thats what i tell the wife) your pup will be what it'll be..enjoy...atb

i answered the question the last time it was asked along the lines of......fun hunters use beddy x's, whippet x's in fact allsorts..........pro hunters and the older guy's that have been there seen it and got the tee shirt all favour collie x's.....that to me says it all -
theres no doubt about it paddy throws well, he's from a well bred consistent litter, he's in love with my bitches and wants to make love as a long time pal of bob my thoughts are .......if only we didn't live in a wee hunting outpost......what could he throw if he was further south and getting a bigger variety of bitches.........not that their my type (although i admire a good one for what it is) i'd like to see him over one of the well bred saluki x coursing types, his speed, breeding and fire could throw something really nice

i'll gladly take the odd torn stopper or dew claw through running on stubble part and parcel of the job but rape stubble is a definate no no a wee bit of tape and gauze and a weeks rest ar'nt going to sort a punctured eye

without wishing to offend anyone i kinda liken this argument to the difference between kc reg and non ped whippets. the way i see it they both originally came from if not the same stock at least very similar, breeding down greyhounds using different blood, in effect small 'lurchers'. some guys whose dogs were quick for sure mated similar to similar, cousin to cousin etc and slowly but surely the kc whippet as we know it was born, these dedicated breeders true to their own beliefs refined what they had and started getting picky looking for the fine coat, the roach back, the rose shaped ears etc

do you have experiance in this have you or someone you know had to do this ? If your breeding lurchers then at some point ur going have to. why? Unless ur breeding sight hound type ( saluki x greyhound type) running dogs. ur going need go back to pure running dog at some point why? give me one valid reason .... because sooner or later if it's a bull x line or a collie x line as opposed to a sighthound to sighthound line by concentrating on the good qualities of the collie or bull ie the brains or determination your going to concentrate the qualities and therefore the

just as an incidental to this both my bitches are similar way bred one by a deerhound type lurcher to lurcher line for generations and out of a greyhound, the other by a collie x that can be traced back decades out of a greyhound, both of mine work, both are quick and both retain a lot of the characteristics of the non running dog breed

the 'crush' bitch that bob spoke about.........offers similar good breeding (he owns the sire) her straight line speed is maybe not up to paddy or bens (almost bob's) but it has to be remembered that these 2 brothers are among the top scratch racers in the country perhaps even of a generation. but 'crush' offers a little more maybe because she was raised as a hunter 1st and a racer 2nd, apart from the speed bit she has a high prey drive and is incredibly agile turning as they say on a tanner, she retrieves like a lurcher and isn't afraid of thorns and such........phil lloyd, dave sleight and m

moo, trying to keep it real, most rabbits are caught in what 30,40 yds......................do you need saluki stamina, given any kind of law what is it that gets a dog up to its quarry ?.............straight line speed mate. but it also has to be remembered that a lot of these guys are moochers, ferreters (thats the breeders game) and occasional bunny lampers. Knowing both these dogs as i do, the bitch has probably the smartest tightest feet i've seen in years on a lurcher, paddy the sire and his brother are knocking on 5 years old and have never had a foot injury either racing or rabbiting t

for whippet racing a long time ago we used to tape below the stopper only (so there was minimal restriction) and have a bit of flexible cheap carpet protecting the stopper, granted this was for one run only but maybe you could adapt the method
-
bob, do you not have any pics of the rest of the litter, the black rough one in carnoustie looks like it'll be big, the one that went to montrose was one of the smartest pups i've ever seen but that was at my house maybe 7 wks old, what about some of paddy's other pup's as well because he's been mated to a few interesting types

a 'hardblood' whippet is non kc reg, they are usually raced under the rules of the 'british whippet racing association' (bwra) or the 'national whippet racing federation' (nwrf), their lineage can be traced back many decades, they are faster and stronger than kc whippets, their ancestry along with greyhound may include terrier many generations ago, they are also known as non peds and grews.
