only experience and exposure to a variety of situations i think will help, i've one thats wary of strange / new things but very fiery and forward in other ways, all dogs are different bud

smart looking pups -
i try not to go out windless and bright especially on my own permissions leaving uneducated quarry for the right night, it won't be long before we get the lampshy type posts or wary quarry...can't get my pup / dog a run, but sometimes on other ground a wee bit of sport and keeping the mutts fit certainly does not do too much harm, and in calm clear windless conditions better to get up early and out with the ferrets

lots of interesting replies, type of ground and most likely prey are major factors but some types / breeds suit some types of owners and the amount of effort time their willing to put in to rearing a pup, experience also counts as an experienced owner can enter the pup according to it's progressing ability and not just jump in at the deep end, we've all heard of the beddy / whippet taking roe and 1st x deerhound greyhound taking rats and rabbits but for me the middle route with a good chance of making an allrounder would be a collie x with the percentages to suit the owner / type of ground

if only the powers that be could suss this, in their eyes a poacher taking the odd rabbit commits the same crime as a numpty shooting badgers or killing deer and leaving them lying
-
i'm not talking about leaving the guts and head lying thats just careless or lazy cnt's but their at least taking a bit of venison away i'm talking about knobs killing them for killings sake and just leaving a mauled carcass lying to rot...inexcusable

sorry sirious to disagree but jazz up to maybe a year old would pick up a bunny alongside a hedge or ditch and carry it out into the field to chase it again but would then retrieve it, it was like she wanted the wee rush of excitement all over she stopped of her own accord but sometimes especially early season lamping the first squatter of the night gets nudged up like she wants a run before getting down to work in fact her best nights have followed one of these that has given her the run around almost as if she's woken up to how awkward some can be, personally i think it's an intelligence thi -
mines was catching the odd bunny out mooching at an early age but for me it was more about her learning about her environment (ditches, prey, scents, fences, hedges, cover etc) and her own limitations both physical and mental, doing this almost daily allowed me to gauge when she was ready to be deliberately slipped at quarry, she has come on well and at times seems the real deal but at others she plays like a pup and tests her boundaries both with us and other dogs, she's nearly 2 and still not mature although she has a decent wee tally building, my advice take it easy, be cool and let it be a

crorider, take a wee bit of advice bud please, make friends with older experienced guy's like johnnyboy you'll learn more from them than any books, and there is no shortcut to experience and if you lived anywhere near me i'd take you out with a seasoned dog to see how they (and i ) work, there will be sensible guy's near you who i'm sure would do the same, i'm forever telling my headstrong and sometimes lippy 14 yr old god gave him 2 ears and 2 eyes but only one mouth for a reason atb

i think the problem is everywhere, up here a farmer i do a bit of ferreting for has been threatened with arson and a beating from 4 guys coursing the mans in his 's ffs, another where i do a bit of lamping has found 3 dead roe in the last month left lying to rot initially he questioned me about it, theres lots more incidents but some of the guys are on here so best not, permission is hard enough to come by, trust takes years to build up and these numpties are fecking it for all the good guys

not a breath of wind, stars shining everywhere and the moons getting bigger ideal conditions for a beer and an early night, been out 3 in a row though

i think it was called 'running a bitch in heat' from around the end of august

seems sad the two needing homes but they're from good stock someone from here might take a wee chance on one of them, must say although i'm a big fan of the collie x i have a soft spot for a deerhoundy type and a wee touch of deerhound in the mix can help an alrounder, someone mentioned their feet..... my 'belle' gets hours of walking every day and i cant get her up on her toes, she has big wide feet that seem really strong and her grip is great as she can turn tight her nails need constant attention which i think is down to her diet which has lots of bones in it and the way she walks. she alm

there was quite an interesting thread on this fairly recently with lots of differing opinions would be worth a read for me though its a no no

maybe so dave but your mutts aren't catching them as well as a pish hancock last nite the night before when you were out just up the road and struggled even my show pony has got in on the act with this good weather apologies moo for hijacking your post but some of the partimers need showing how the old guys do it

an absolute belter i dont think she'll grow up much now but she looks like she'll fill out well, has she seen any bunnies yet ? hows her retrieving coming on ?
-
if this was a general question and not just aimed at the original poster kieren, i learned my lesson on this 30 yrs ago i'd got a cracking non ped pup bred by a multiple champion out of an open class bitch that had never won a title but had at one time or other beaten every champion on the go, by the time the pup was 10 months she'd had a toe off and broken another two, fast as feck, a wee cracker at home everyone adored 'becky' but she had to go turns out the reason her mum never won a title was she couldn't get more than a couple of runs in a row because of dodgy feet, always had a wee thi

i understand where you guy's are coming from but there are downsides to working them almost daily, wee strains and pulls take ages to heal cos they're not getting a complete rest, at times it seems theres always a wee tear, thorn or claw needing attention, theres always bunnies needing gutted etc i know i've extolled the working virtues of the collie x but maybe their bouncebackability and general toughness is as important. enjoy your time out with your mutts when your home and let them enjoy the rest when your away and my poor mutts are limping their way through the rabbit population

i can see the point of a saluki / greyhound or a deerhound / greyhound with both bringing in similar traits stamina, good feet, etc i can see the point of a saluki / collie i saw a cracking deerhound / collie years ago, ive even saw a beddy / saluki but for my money mixing the 2 doesn't add up
-
ive got to agree that working the bitch, making her the best you can over even a year or two is the way to go, you'll maybe find her style or your taste in lurchers change and you can then pick a proven stud to suit, my bitch is near 5 and caught lots of rabbits day / night summer / winter for 4 seasons and its only now that i'm thinking of breeding her
-
just my opinion guys but aren't both renowned for much the same things like tough feet and temperament, stamina etc and i thought the purpose of crossing was to bring something new to the mix i'm not saying they would be good or bad i just don't see the point

so she was out hunting twice a week at 6 mnth old
