  1. we recently travelled 4 1/2 hrs each way to a fun day, we had a laugh met up with some pals old and new, had a go on the archery and the like spent £130 on fuel and a white lurcher with a yellow piss stain on it's coat from dirty bedding won our class......should we have to take a chance on honesty or integrity ?
  2. it's maybe not crufts and it doesn't matter how much the entry fee is, some folk travel hundreds of miles and spends weeks getting their dog right for a show (often costing them a lot of money) but they deserve a fair crack of the whip, an honest judge with a basic understanding of conformation, skeletal structure and musculature isn't too much to ask, is it ?
  3. but it's not about kc anything you said you'd pick the healthiest but what if the healthiest wasn't made right ? why in your words would you...choose to make everyone happy ? in judging your only ever going to please one guy....the winner......a judge (and its easier in lurchers) must take conformation into account, is this animal fit for purpose, be it rabbiter, courser or bigger gear.......it's got narrow shoulders or loose elbows but its healthy doesn't cut it......neither does playing to the crowd trying to pick a popular choice
  4. so where does conformation come into it bob ? like grant says with terriers theres a huge variety all with different standards but away from injuries and coat texture every running dog should have the same basic frame and structure, you know like...... 7 lumbar vertebrae or......... upper arms longer (around 20%) than the scalpulae........ etc
  5. I like All kinds of running dog so if there needin a judge next year ill say yes ) be as we'll it can't be that hard pick a dog that looks like it gets a lot of work and kept well simple job done then don't go on thl for a couple of weeks lol hilarious mate, the guy that judged this show had kept terriers for decades and look at the controversy
  6. a hard long lasting frost that doesn't lift during the day is a definate no no, but like others have said there are other hazards out there, we ferret in woods a lot not a lot of frost but branches roots and wire can be a nightmare, jazz has pulled a nail off twice on tarmac both times my cock up.... had her off the lead in a local lane where i've never seen a rabbit before the other i grabbed at quarry in a gate net maybe too soon and it ran up the road.... both times back running in a couple of weeks with no long term bother...... we cant wrap them in cotton wool but sometimes commonsense ha
  7. so as asked for in my post........constructive ideas ? everything youve written about has already been covered on this or the previous thread
  8. come back whin all is forgiven
  9. i think folk are missing the point, the title of this thread is 'show standard' i think it's been agreed in an ideal world all entrants would be workers but it's not a working trial it's a beauty show, with the best will in the world we cant judge working ability in a park, so what do we do ? we put an experienced judge in the middle who like us all is going to have his own wee likes and dislikes so right away some folks are not going to be happy. so rather than bicker and fight amongst ourselves lets try some constructive ideas...............why not and i know sometimes it's hard enough to ge
  10. Pup is from delboy is that not the brother to 'rake abouts' 'jake'?
  11. i just thought it best to get them up early i'm nightshift and going to bed soon
  12. i'm told that they are pish........... but i don't listen to people that haven't had one or couldn't train one
  13. but the problem arises in the overall, which will include everything.......russels, lakeys, borders, crosses, ratting / bushing, entered etc
  14. i think the very term 'show' means that its all about how they look on the day ie conformation and condition, like ive said before we can't judge working ability in a park, a worker for me is defined by doing what it's owner requires from it, my buddy keeps a few russels they rat and rabbit every day but only come across a fox every now and then, and i do mean every day even when he comes back from a show he has them out for an hour or two.....they do what he asks they're workers perhaps not to everyones tastes but variety is the spice of life eh. the way i was brought up and taught a foxing t
  15. he's a class act jan, is he even winking in the bottom pic
  16. both mines have them and touch wood no probs yet, i've had trouble in the past and its an expensive op and for the dog i suppose any op carries risks and the dog is out for weeks, if i was breeding a litter i'd have them off
  17. why blame them wer'e all in the same boat, i thought i was too fly to bite on this but youve hooked me the lure was too strong, i think i may have made a rod for my own back here but just because my collie dog was on a hares ear doesn't mean i cant bream of the day when we all stand together in one plaice. for cod's sake people just have to dab on a keyboard trouting on about one guy having a hake with a gun and bingo theres loads of pollacks written, of course we should all be game and fry different streams of outdoor activities, we don't have to cast far on here to find some shark spinning a
  18. i don't think its a new thing just thl highlights it and makes it national or even international as far back as i can remember theres always been a local chestbeater wherever i've hunted, i enjoy the craic at shows and a mates company ferreting but the only pal who really knows what we catch or don't especially at night is my mutt
  19. hes not even started yet gona be a shit load more pics  a will try and keep it to a minimum lol pish..we need update pics
