  2. have you tried teaching her 'hold' and go down that route she sounds like she's the obedient sort got to be worth a try
  3. dave you didn't answer my questions on the last topic why jump in now ? and its golf course
  4. i'm a fan of retrieving dummies with a torch in the dark it teaches pups lots, torch on fetch......torch off here......i think it imprints good habits early and at least for early training you can pick a place where there are no distractions like scents, game or other dogs
  5. is a potential sire / stud dog proven if he catches a thousand rabbits a season or if he produces good workers?
  6. i know this started out terrier related, but perhaps the lurcher side of things need a wee change of attitude.......ie although both my current dogs work one does much better at the shows, her conformation is better all round and she is easily the faster of the two but it,s the one with the bandy legs thats the better worker, has more multi run stamina, more brain, better retriever etc but her conformation isn't right.......should we review what we regard as the 'right sort' ? i could give lots of examples but don't want to belittle anyones lookers but as food for thought how many leggy deep c
  7. breeding 2 top class grafting 1 x collie greyhounds in theory sounds great and i have no doubt that some of the offspring would be ace but i'm just as sure some would throw the wrong way (ie grey brain and stamina with collie speed) i think thats why up until very recently at least hancock has bred from greyhound bitches which will have a levelling effect on the pups as well as a higher percentage having enough speed to make hunters, in good hands of course
  8. trouble is all dogs are different some of the very driven types will literally run till they drop the key is to know your dog
  9. it's not so much the greenkeepers peed of at hares being killed i don't think but the fact that they've been left dumped in the rough and in the undergrowth on the railway line, showing no respect for him, the prey, the land, the wildlife or indeed the guys that had permission, the club commitee got complaints from members who have witnessed coursing, catching , dumping in broad daylight and at dusk when the professional has been the only guy around and it's them who have put their foot down as they have the final say. the original poster got his permission a couple of years ago for airgun sho
  10. kind of....hes 50 / 50........his sire is 3/4 collie 1/4 greyhound and his dam is 3/4 greyhound and 1/4 collie
  11. burke (as in burke and hare) smart pup by the way
  12. don't know about that mate but his breeding is well proven i know a half sister to him that has over 4000 rabbits to her name, his litter brother owned by a mate of mine is ticking along just nicely as well
  13. take her down, have a wee holiday i'm sure it'll be a good day.....your right getting the judges wouldn't be easy but it would certainly take away all the accusations of nepetism and favouritism because with that system the maximum points a single judge could award would be a 6th of the total
  14. just had a wee look at the qualifiers thread for the supreme british lurcher....if your going down with sky the very best of luck to linsey.............also they seem to have a panel of judges system for this where the dogs are marked out of 20 for conformation, movement, condition, presence, bite and feet, with no conferring between judges till after the event, now i understand that this is for a relatively small class but could this system be adapted or modified ?
  15. sorry mate got to dissagree..........it's the vets taking the piss out of the insurers that have pushed up bill's, i've told it before but my mother in laws king charles developed that encephalitis thing they get and imo it was kept alive far too long walking about in agony not able to function or walk in a straight line, howling in pain etc all the while the vets getting another consultation fee or we can try this......or that.......if we walk in with cash we can maybe get a deal but when they themselves are signing the invoice to the insurers....talk about a flawed system
  16. so stuart are you blaming the racing guys if so you better have proof i didnt blame anyone it's just a fact in a wee town like this but as you brought it up how many guy's racers included have been daft enough to put posts on here bragging about being on the permission? heres hoping no one in authority has already looked or can get access to the posts eh
  17. i agree with bunnys, get them out jumping logs, crossing burns (streams) meeting livestock etc but as they find their way i watch them gauging how they take things on board, 'belle' pictured above retrieved a bunny my other dog brought back live and kicking at 12 wks old it wasn't planned but was an opportunity too good to miss, another wee step on the learning ladder, she caught her first daylight rabbits at around 8mnth and her first lamped at 9mnth but she was still a pup and wasn't finished growing physically or mentally and i continued with 1's and 2's for a while but i really don't see t
  18. as a wee add on, no doubt if theres not a councilor on the golf club commitee he'll have a cousin or aunt or something there like i said its a wee place, there goes any chance of resurrecting the racing club well done guy's
  19. yip, ive had the place for over 20 yrs, ive still got the surrounding farms and the guy still wants me to ferret for him but no dogs, the wildlife copper has also been in touch and he has a wee list apparently and i'm told reg no's, a wee place like this everybody knows everybody and it looks like someone has been dropped in it
  20. and are we (scotland england ireland or wales) best in the world at football or rugby ? the best nations seem to educate the mind first holding back a little on the competitive side so probably a good argument for letting them mature first I dont know on that one I recon we got the best youth academies for football and rugby for young ages. To bring the crop through. I'd say its more competitive in youth sports then the adults Look at the regional rugby and football academies there ruthless even from the under 7's. Pushing them as far as can be taken Always two sides to an argument.
  21. well chuffed for you mate, about time though eh, he looks a cracker i'm sure he'll do you proud, i knows he's just a babe but any clues on his temperament yet ? he'll maybe come out of his shell in a day or two, and if the old man gets too pissed off with his new kennelmate he could always have a holiday eating porridge and haggis mate
