Enjoyable "5" Hours Trekking With A Few Mutts In Tow...
birddog replied to FUJI's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
cracking pics bud, dogs look in great nick, makes my 2 hrs in the freezin wind this morning look like a wee stroll.......and you think your getting old....my fingers couldn't work the camera -
Your an auld c**t but I dunno, I feel a sense of panick sometimes as if my life is disappearing and I've not done enough these days while the body's willing and times running out, does that make sense? I need to get a decent f*****g dog but I'm scared incase the desire just ain't the same cos its dwindled recently when i'm tired and can't be bothered.....ant and dec look a better option (jeez thats bad) the fact that i have a decent mutt and the winds howling are all the motivation i need........ get yourself a decent dog and get out there while you can

the real downer for me ...........as a gallus youth i didn't realise just how good some of my mutts were and took it for granted that they could catch any amounts of all sorts of fur and feather...........2 really stand out a big hairy mick douglas bred dog that took daytime hares and roe for fun.........and a wee collie cross bitch that never missed a bolter...........if only i'd had a camera in those days.....

in my 50's now mortgage free, decent job, enough permission for me and mine, kids nearly away (are they ever?), still loads of desire and hunger but how good would it be if i had the strength, fitness, fearlessness of youth to go with the hard earned knowledge of 40 yrs in the dog game ?

i seem to be picking up that a lot of these types were from long ago, have tastes in lurchers changed or are todays base deerhounds not up to it ?
-
I could only imagine the stealthy brainy sort of mutt that would be mate. What sort of height? Cheers Tusker it as about 40yr ago i was just a lad and it wasn't any bigger than my uncles racing greyhounds i'd guess 25" ish, the guy himself taught me loads about setting nets and the ways of salmon and things, he had a pet fox it was like another world

a well known local poacher of my youth had a deerhound collie, a really smart, well made, big strong bitch did everything you'd expect of a lurcher although single handed hare was more a war of attrition, but he lived in the country and the dog was used most days so it got plenty of practise

my dog does the same on its first slip then runs silent after that, but his other quallities make up for that as hes a good bushing dog and will find rabbits excelent recall and jumps fences chasing so hes staying for life obviously with yours and my mates its down to a wee bit of excitement, kinda like my jazz kicks up sitters at the start of the season like she wants a chase, a bit of fun but she soon knuckles down, i suspect its a wee bit of frustration with joshc123 's dog waiting a month or two and picking a few easy early season bunnies and with a bit of luck the collie in it will k

a mates dog gives the odd yap on the 1st bunny or two at the start of the night and then settles into work mode.......it could be excitement or frustration, i'd forget about lamping just now, light nights big moon and hard ground........make the dog your pal, go mooching, a wee bit of retrieving or jumping practise and the like.....september dark nights and green rabbits arn't that far away atb
-
looks fairly superficial bud it'll mend in no time, i'd be tempted to leave it open fresh air and the dog itself will sort it, just keep an eye on it and keep it clean, and bonus is you'll be able to spend a wee bit more time with your rescued bitch atb

i'll humour you and start it........good old tried and tested collie x for me........not a specialist on any of the 3 species but i wouldn't go hungry
-
this x was very common in the 60s and early 70s due to there size dogs were average 27" to 28" and sometimes 30"bitches from 25" to 27" and more often than not, they were slow to mature, ie, had difficulty picking there quarry up, turning, well, some were way out, then you had one in a few that was a masterpiece, catching, retrieving, I had a couple in the past, that was very good, especially for Hare, and deer, they were made for that job, 3/4 grey 1/4/deerhound most rough coated, great temperament, easy to do and they were mad for work, would I have one again?? I dont think so, they are larg
