surely 'f*****g off and doing its own thing' is different from hunting up.......a spaniel or pointer hunts up but are under control......how could you teach a dog to gate net properly if it hadn't been taught to hunt up under control ? how could it mark a hidden bolt hole if it didn't hunt up ?

i think most dogs are smart enough to recognise the different disciplines and that walking the woods / fields, a bit of ferreting or mooching with a young pup whilst working on its recall, retrieving, jumping, obedience etc can only do good, if a pups recall is good when ferreting for example is good with nets, ferrets, dead rabbits, other dogs and all sorts of scenty type temptations it can only imo be a good thing for future lamping or lamping training, for me as much experiences as possible with a pup is the way to go ie if a pup is well stockbroken by day there is less chance of a mistake

Collie Greyhound Pup Stopped Retrieving
birddog replied to neil b's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
plenty of decent advice so far mate, collie x's can think that they can out think you so it pays to try and stay a step ahead, plenty of patience will pay off, if it were my pup i'd forget about retrieving for a week or three and be making up some other games to keep the interest, obedience and bond going, what about trying a chase / find me game start off easy and work up to hiding in the woods making the pup want to be with you, i'd also be teaching the 'hold' command at home or in the garden plenty of praise and one to one with the boss so that your reinforcing the authority that the pup is -
i do like the sturdiness (of build, feet and temperament) of these types and although ive had a few border collie x's over the years and agree that they are more likely to do what they're told, i too have lost count of the amount of times my beardie / border x has acted stupid (to me) seemed stubborn or downright disobedient and come up trumps making me feel dumb, i thought it was a beardie trait, maybe guys with experience of both could comment

forecast said scorcher for us......up at half 5 to get the mutts out before it got too hot...........decent walk no numpties about that early........ back at half 7 still mist and drizzle..........half 12 now and the sun is trying so hard but this coastal haar is giving it a hard time.........and going out with shorts on this morning i'd forgotten how sore nettle stings were on bare legs

cheap as chips mate (and we get overtime rates for working there) my daughter got married on saturday...........thats expensive!

scone in the beginning was fab, if not the best it was certainly up there but slowly the prices have creeped up the double glazing type stalls have increased and the kiddie on country folk are taking over, no doubt there are still some good things / stalls/ events there but its a big competitive world out there, entry, parking and fuel would cost me about £100, a burger or three a few beers or coffees and it quickly gets out of hand, i'd need to get a lot of bargains to make that up, as it happened we had a cracking family barbie yesterday a few beers loads of craic and andy murray won, i hop

we were this events biggest fans for years we'd spend maybe £4 or 500 on the day allsorts of shooting hunting and fishing gear books clothing food for the year and imo as long as folks keep going its only going to get worse........warwickshire 22nd sept....£8 entry kids free......gundog and game fair 13th / 14th july £10 entry buy one get one free and kids free............frampton 8th sept £8 entry...........holkham 27 / 28th july £15 free parking and kids.....althorp country fair 5th / 6th may £13 under 5's free.....the east anglian £12 under 5's and parking free....the list is endless just a

age does make a difference in both dog and handler and the good examples of both will go on learning for years, police dogs, sniffer dogs, guide dogs and the like don't start proper training till they are sometimes 2yr old up till then they are allowed to be pups and learn the basics, manners etc
-
i use a rabbit skin dummy in the park progressing to dead rabbits as the pup progresses, doing it at this time of year reinforces recall when the lamp is turned off, the pup learns when the beam is on a spot theres always something there giving it confidence in your gamefinding, retrieve can be perfected etc.....when it comes to september pick a black windy night and wait for a sitter there should be lots of green bunnies about by then and you can work on building the pups confidence by november it'll mow them down atb

my hancock speaking from experience seems to tick all your boxes mate rough coated, works cover / mooches, fur and feather, nearly 6 yr old and touch wood no long term injuries, lamps and ferrets well, quick enough for golf course bunnies, as for the 20 yd bursts maybe not as electric as a small whippet she does ok and her extra savvy seems to put her in the right place at the right time.......before the hancock knockers jump in i'm not saying that hancocks are the be all....but i'd argue that collie x's were

After Vin's Food/diet Thread. What About Condtioning
birddog replied to Tiny 7's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
mine get road walking, mooching and ball work dailly, but it doesn't compare to the twisting and turning of working, i'm surprised no one has said different dogs need different work to get them fit, some lighter types would wilt under the workload of a strong collie x and the stronger types would go fat and lazy with a lighter workload -
most can't spell it

baw, have you went all pretentious on us....dawg wtf is that about....are you trying to impress our yank friends, have you forgotten your roots....its dug..D. U. G. dug
-
too many variables.....some folks go lamping for an hour or so and have only half a dozen runs others go all night and catch a hundred rabbits most are somewhere inbetween....early season and mild nights will need a different approach to midwinter subzero nights......is the dog really fit or just getting there....is it over or under weight ..........can't see any hard and fast rules.....imo you need to vary feeding accordingly

Top Line Coursing Dog Men..question About Dog Diets.
birddog replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
like i said earlier and going along with skycat every dog is different and it's a poor dogman that treats all his mutts the same....rules are there to be broken by both dogs and humans........my collie x puts on weight passing a butchers and my higher strung fussier deerhound x needs tempting at every mealtime she seems to need more protien ( a higher percentage) and what she eats one day she wont the next.......if i were to swap the two bowls for a week i'd get done by rspca on 2 counts one for obesity and the other for starvation -

Top Line Coursing Dog Men..question About Dog Diets.
birddog replied to a topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
there are dozens of books on feeding and nutrition.......there are probably thousands of internet articles on the same...........everyone and every dog is different......but what really gets me all these clever experts using scientific terminology........and they cant use a spellchecker -

"rabbits Are Friends, Not Food"
birddog replied to Vicky Steadman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i know / think in my wee bitch it was down to familiarity but how do they tell them apart ? especially when its an instant instinctive chase thing in the field.....didn't phil lloyd keep pet bunnies to familiarise his pups with them ?
