i only asked questions, but if i were wanting to produce a workfing dog for myself in theory i could use one of his crosses out of a line i liked thats been proven by lots of dogs and lots of folks over lots of years and cross it with say a platts deerhound x again produced over a long time. these breeders have sourced the initial pure breds, put in the work and effort for years, the customers have tried and tested them, in effect culling the inferior individuals leaving me or you or anyone the easy bit of picking which traits from which line we like and using them to suit our own needs, ive n

i didn't throw (i presume thats the word you meant) other names in for the above reason

a week is a long time in preseason, she's looking well now..........not as good as the pom yet

He farms dogs for money. Thats it. A mate went back to give him the run down of the way his dog had turned out, because Hanck had asked him to when he bought it. So two years later he made the journey to tell him,but when Hanck realised he hadnt come for another pup he quickly lost interest and left him standing there like a prick. If you have a good dog from him fair play to you. You could enter that dog into your own breeding programme, but hes only doing it for a living not for the love of it. i'm not for or against hancock, what any man does is between him and his conscious and is his b

hancock keeps records............5 generations ago was a pure collie in mine
-
does hancock breed and his customers test, the goog ones getting bred from? we are told when creating a strain or type its a numbers game, are his customers merely paying for the priveledge? has he not been ruthless, culling inferior stock not worth breeding from (i'm thinking about some of the proposed studs that were never used or used and found wanting) ?
-
Without turning this into a hancock thread. We are talking breeding from dogs which are tested or at least worked to a standard the breeder wants, more than likely excluding the the F1 parents that'll be under...........'guys are breeding his dogs together and producing dogs that both look and act like lurchers', there are guys that work his dogs
-
this is probably gonna throw the proverbial cat amongst it but.........hancock has successfully been doing it for decades with 3 breeds (greyhound, beardie and border), he has 1st x's, 2nd x's, 3/8 one way, 3/8 the other, reverse 3/4, 7/16 x 9/16th just about every permeation, guys are breeding his dogs together and producing dogs that both look and act like lurchers and have been bred from lurchers

Stunning is the word birddog, a credit to you, ATB with her, buster. ta muchly but i only feed her kev (dvdski) bred her and her father, he worked her grandmother, so its his line his credit and i think its hilarious (sorry kev) his gran who must be a very old lady has a 32" deerhound x, no ones gonna nick her pension
-
all good kev, get a pic of 'jean' up mate, not had camera out for a while but this is the latest of 'belle' she's turned out well bud.....can be really fiery at times though
-
gibbo, sorry to hijack your thread bud , boyo its such a headache at times.... get her right and she's strong, keen, attentive, run all night and looks ace .......her breeder tells me her grandmother (on the deerhound x side) was the same...........theres times she turned her nose up at the best of grub and eaten mouldy bread off the lawn intended for birds or a rotten windfall apple
-
really smart pair torchy and they look in top nick........youve just fckd up my top ten on here though lol back to the drawing board...........
-
with mate .......i think it must be a deerhound trait being a fussy so n so, with belle i find it a hard balance as she seems to do better with more exercise.....not enough and her appetite's poor, too much and she's goes lean
-
i saw some pics, they looked ace together, they seem to be maturing well .........funny you say about the loss of appetite but my 'belle' has lost lots of condition in the heat, she really doesn't like it either

Ive kept dogs in the kennel that were used soley as lampers, littermates were only used daytime. All the dogs needed resting at times and never suffered from being selectively used,in fact id say it was of benefit to them. as giro said each to there own but personaly I prefer to get give my dogs 110 % and use them to there full potential exactly, they give they're all for us, so we should try for them
-
she looks well, is that bruces sister ?
-
maybe i expect too much but for me lamping is just one thing a decent lurcher should be able to do, there has been times i've had an hour or two ferretting in the morning and a few hours on the lamp at night with no ill effects

Out For A Mooching About With Me Beddy Grey And Terrier ?
birddog replied to Richie87's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
don't think they inject venom every time but when they do a lot depends on the size of the dog and the site of the bite.......potentially could cause anaphylaxis and breathing difficulties......any kind of immediate reaction i wouldn't hang about get it to a vet, i'd carry it if possible to try and stop the venom circulating, i know in humans some folks it don't bother and reactions can vary all the way up to time critical life threatening symptoms -

never mind the bunny i was thinking more crispy duck........looks like a good walk on a decent day.....beats work eh -
some of the very best workers start a little later in life, the poor wee thing doesn't know its a hunting dog yet, get it out and about and find its legs so to speak, it doesn't sound the confident sort, give it time and lots of experiences, take it out itself, take it out with experienced dogs, show it whats expected of it, if it hasn't seen anything it can't be expected to know anything..............theres lots of previous threads about retrieving probs i'm sure the solution is already on here somewhere
-
oor old lakey had a knack of finding them when out n about, we get the odd one in the garden but the lurchers kinda ignore them
-
Get her trained before you get the pup..... plummer didn't do a book on that ! maybe an opportunity there.............
-
so......you've been kept awake by a hundred pricks ?
-
ditto.........and a very expensive seatrout rod
