  1. who said past it at 50........................put em up........put em up
  2. Both my pups parents were brindle :-( Lol please don't tell me your pups fawn or black then......... the after effects of last night are making things fuzzy enough......
  3. i was told by a greyhound breeder long ago, pick a female the colour of the sire or a male the colour of the dam.....some logic there to my mind, the pup may have inherited qualities from both parents, my two bitches just now are the same colour as their sires and they're no too bad
  4. she's no bad but this ones better ............lol
  5. That may Work. You could also have the Dog Running up and Down the Fenceline Barking it's Fecking Head off.Better off training the dog to jump or ripping itself on barbed wire or the like
  6. start low (in the puppy pic i started with 1 bar.....5" ) lots of praise, be consistent with the command ( always use the same 1 ) build confidence at step 1 before step 2, don't give the pup too much too soon theres no hurry, be patient and add variety (wire, wood, mesh, walls, gates ) as the pup progresses , later i use jump training to reinforce retrieve training as well mixing it up with ball, dummies and game
  7. Listen pal I've seen a few lads taking the piss out of your spelling and a few defending you. Don't get me wrong, we didn't all go to school and get 10 GCSEs but your spelling isn't just bad, it's horrendous. Are there not any online courses you can do to help you? I'm sure there will be. I still aren't sure what that post says. spellchecker ?..............
  8. maybe why collie greyhound x bull greyhounds are so good
  9. my 1st experience of a whippet was pre school (almost 50yr ago) a relative had a 14lb bitch whose exploits are still recalled by older relatives........when whippet racing was in its infancy in scotland most of us started with peddies but soon swapped allegiences to the non ped type which we found superior (racing and working) but hey that was 30yr ago maybe my memory's going.....................just to add i'll always be a whippet fan but they seem to have lost type imo in recent years
  10. according to hancock and one of his books he never sells older dogs, was there not a thread on here a while back slating him for putting down pups rather than keeping them and selling them as saplings ? if he didn't lie about his dogs how can he cross breed with bull blood or whatever and call them kc reg ? are they not just small smooth coated lurchers? ive only saw two of his 'whippets' and although i was impressed with them and they did work well on a variety of game, they were way bigger than the breed standard (18 1/2" - 20" for a male). he also slates lurchers the 2007 whippet yearbo
  11. jim ......if i had legs like that i wouldnae wear shorts
  12. with the allegations of added 'other' blood.....are his dogs kc registered ?
  13. My deerhound x is too big  mine isn't
  14. its kinda like saying my saluki x has too much stamina or my collie x learns too quick...........mind boggling
  15. He is a really good dog! Amazing around my horses and retrives a ball and places it in my hand, he comes back on a whistle, or just a simple "here" i cant fault him apart from as soon as he sees the lamp on :/ he sounds a good sort (what about a pic ? ) maybe just needs a wee bit of polishing, i'd have him out lots working on bond, obedience, retrieving, all sorts .....but most of all lamping......maybe worth trying to tire him out before lamping, what did his previous owner do with him ?
  16. terrain, opportunity time of year and experience all come into it as well mines are walking through the woods from 12wks, watching the older dog, learning new skills, sniffing down burrows etc my collie x caught her first bunny at 7mnth but didnt go lamping till near a yr old, my deerhound x caught much earlier and was ready for lamping earlier , with her lighter frame she found her feet quicker but i do take it easy and prefer to err on the safe side, rather be late than early, but every dog is different
  17. well done mate soooooooooo chuffed for you.............look out them minshaws here comes cassie
  18. often excitable types need lots and lots of work to settle them, its kinda the more game they see the less exciting it is, get him out lots, the more he sees chases and catches the less of a novelty they'll be, but my worry would be if hes really that excited and headstrong have the basics been done, is he cool with livestock ? and does he retrieve ? , hows his recall etc ?
  19. both mine will chase a lure and when at shows (i haven't been to any this year) i sometimes enter for the craic, its a wee bit of fun some banter, both mine work regular and it helps keep them in trim during the summer. one of the most successful show and lurcher race dogs in this neck of the woods is an outstanding worker capable of taking ALL game, hes bred with bull, saluki and greyhound in him and although he looks greyhoundy albeit a big strong one no-one bats an eye if i were running lurcher racing i'd throw in some proper hurdles.....lurchers can jump......can the purpose bred
  20. we could argue till the cows come home about the whole racing thing bottom line is if your not happy don't enter and to answer the original posters question if i were wanting to go round fairs and shows racing to win i'd try and find an oversize (35 or 40lb) non ped
  21. pups are looking real well, look forward to seeing their progress
  22. not wanting to hijack the thread but.......would training a pup on its own and using its mother to help school it not work well?
  23. your prayers are answered...............move to scotland
  24. double trouble.......rearing and training 1 pup is time consuming at best but 2 ?...........imo much better to rear 1 to maturity getting the best you can from it , then it becomes a little helper when training a new pup, passing on good things, setting a good example etc......2 pups together can bond stronger with each other rather than you, one could dominate and overpower the other never letting it reach its full potential
