  1. pup gets smarter by the day.......if you look in a scottish dictionary under 'braw' you'll find a pic of it
  2. that fawn pup is getting a real don't mess with me look about him
  3. we're being pushed more and more into the shadows.........why hide there with a dog that doesn't 'look' like a lurcher even if all the ingredients are here, even if i / we are honest enough, work them hard enough, cull ruthlessly ......they have over a century start on us
  4. whats it matter how many threads theres been on this? its my first thread about it because i wanted a whippet pup and mikes line was possible option. dont matter know anyhow has ive chosen a pup from somwhere else. out of curiosity........what did you pick ? a deerhound slower than a whippet with more stamina

  6. but we sent the original deerhounds etc over there, maybe theres too many show folks here, maybe they don't have the same amount of tree hugging do gooders, they certainly don't have the same restrictions but in real terms they're fairly recent, who knows its maybe way more complicated than first looks would suggest but i still really fancy that mix of stag / yute x collie ...........jeez i could fill a freezer or three with one of them
  7. over 100 yrs of breeding for purpose and as i understand it quite ruthlessly.............our deerhound breeders have been breeding for size or show points (with a few excellent exceptions) .............as i see it they have all the grit the bully guys like, the stature and determination for the pre ban deer guys, they sure have as much stamina as anything we have and now they're putting collie brains into the mix.......but the biggest thing they have is the opportunity to test these qualities and discuss them openly which it looks like we sadly never will again I understand what you're sa
  8. rest rest and more rest, if its been a proper dislocation as opposed to a subluxation (a partial dislocation or one that comes out and goes back on its own accord) the surrounding structures tendons, ligaments etc are going to need time to heal as these carry very little blood, thats why the liniment type remedies work as they increase blood flow, there is the risk using these that you can burn the skin with overuse best to keep an eye out for that, like has been said a callous will strengthen the area but i wouldn't do anything other than cage rest working up to a gentle on the lead toilet wa
  9. remember nose and stamina in non peds is easily explained as there are other breeds not too far back in their lineage including beddy , bull and greyhound.......the ones i worked were a long time ago and granted at times they were too fast, too driven........ but for an up and at them type get the hare in the car and move on they took some beating........so what and whip grey on here both work some of theirs but 30yr ago i saw them take all game fur and feather as well as teeth and roe
  10. I'm sure that they would, its just would those in the litter that dont all be shot? So your saying that nobody over here ever culls rubbish then are you? Its not an American thing, selective breeding been going on for years. i get what both you guys are saying, but over here do failed coursers not get passed on to lampers ? so would failed coyote dogs not get passed down to someone with less expectations?
  11. Agree with what you've put there but I do think that we have the right ingredients over here as well its just that the approach to breeding that is different. Trying to import one is something I might look into in the next few years providing I thought that the person sending one over was of the right mindset why import? would straws not be simpler ? Whichever way would be easier tbh, either a retired bitch imported, a pup or straws. Be an interesting experiment either way! theoretically........what would you breed it with ?

  14. we're breeding from dogs that win a few races or rosettes at shows, or from dogs that preban took a few foxes, munties or roe a few times during the season, or a bag of rabbits on the lamp, this lot seem to be taking truck loads of coyotes on numerous consecutive days and with a nights kip and some good feed they'll be ready to go again.........we wait for weeks on rain so our precious charges don't hurt themselves, these guys run on whatever ground they come across because thats where the quarry are only the very best make it to breeding age how many times on here are folks slagged for breedi
  15. be patient young grasshopper.............it'll come
  16. i've had the book since it was 1st published ...........some of the dogs are crackers, one of my own bitches can be traced back to some of them............... i think the thing is these dogs have been tested on ground and quarry that we don't have for over a hundred years, our american cousins seem to have sussed better than many of our breeders the importance of culling and breeding for purpose from proven stock
  17. agree with bosun ......pick the right litter but theres also the fact that if the pup is the type / size / breed / colour / coat you favour its going to get that wee bit more attention, schooling etc
  18. i'm just wondering if theres any pensioner near me with one of those that wants to earn some beer tokens
  19. yeh ,same with Dans stags as well , they dont seem to get many injurys, they (stags) in general must have good feet+tough bodys. wonder if straight deerhound xs in the UK are as tough type dog .? ray cant help but think a wee outcross to one of these would do the deerhound breed a whole lot of good and if any deerhound breeder is thinking about it put me down for a bitch pup
  20. smart pic, all the dogs look strong and capable, personally i like the strong front ends on them and i don't know if anyone else has noticed but for so much work on consecutive days after an obviously testing quarry there doesn't seem to be a lot of injuries / damage
  21. tried loads one of my mutts is a fussy so n so, settled on iams but supplement it with chicken, lamb, beef scraps and fish (most we catch cod mackeral trout and some from tins), like has been said collie x's seem to have a different metabolism from more highly bred sighthoundy types imo, rather than cut her rations or the quality of them i simply give her more exercise or work and she seems to do well enough on it
  22. no seen him for a while bud wtf are you feeding him he looks ace
