If Deerhounds Aren't What They Were
birddog replied to No eye deer's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i think even with all its faults the internet and forums like this can be used to great effect, many of the guys working these types are private, keep themselves to themselves sorts and the fact that we can share experience and ideas as well as see dogs from the other end of the country (even other countries) should make it easier to find potential mates to improve the type -

i can trace mine back i think on the deerhound / lurcher side 8 generations or so and obviously more on the greyhound side, they've all worked way pre ban but thats not the point of this thread, although i'm more than happy with mine, if i had to pick a fault she's thrown a bit to the greyhound and i'd like more substance, a wee bit more weight might help her shrug off the many bumps and bangs that a working dog gets from time to time, so in the future i'd look for a dog with the same quiet till roused nature, working background good conformation and a wee bit more substance to try and compen- 156 replies

If Deerhounds Aren't What They Were

hm.......... the thing is although looks can kill, this thread was started on the discussion side of the forum, knowledgable owners / members were discussing deerhounds and their x's as well as the faults and merits of both, some folk do work their dogs regularily, some have decades of knowledge of both breeding and working them others dream and bitch -

indeed very interesting although they seem to disagree on a few points the thing that struck me was an almost universal call for proper judges or at least judge education, it seems show goers recognise breed failings too and realise that if successful hounds from the showring were of the right conformation and size it would help the breed -

sirius, that old pic is a belter and not too dissimilar to 'gafer's' dog, i hope for the breeds sake that some kc guys are reading this its well documented that deerhound blood was used to recreate the wolfhound but gossip and whispers aside how else is the big size increase of the deerhound in (fairly) recent years explained ? ignoring politics and the ban, it would be good to see the kc alter the standard to something more fit for purpose or put guys with working knowledge of the breed in positions of authority but i don't see mrs blah de blah whatever in her spotless tweeds being replac -

i wonder if its us hunting guys that can take some of the blame..........looking for faster racier types, maybe throwing too much greyhound into the mix, maybe losing build and substance in the pursuit of a hare catching type ? there was a thread a couple of weeks ago i think and reading some of my doggy history stuff..............i wonder if dna testing the modern deerhound would throw up any surprises ? theories abound have the show folks used borzoi or wolfhound blood ?.............would the collie and foxhound blood of yesteryear show up ? gibbo, smart hound mate like him lots -

getting back on track.............i think that probably the breed was originally refined from lurcher types and older writings suggest foxhound and collie blood were used........ perhaps modern deerhound breeders should use good quality tested working lurcher blood to reduce size and improve conformation and type -
recent pic of jazz .............do all collie x ferreters have the same box?

in my experience the more work they get the better.................'belle' above walks the woods dailly and when young took some bruising bumps n tumbles but seemed to learn eventually, she's even picked up on 'stalking' woodland game...........she was a pain to retrieve train somedays good but most not, then two nights ago (she's nearly 3) i was watching 'jazz' work some cover when i realised belle was missing, then from maybe 3 or 400yds away i see her coming carrying a big fat bunny straight to hand no need for the fetch or leave commands just dropped it in my hand, no hanging around for pr -

having been a fan for decades i see a time nearing when the show v working type have as big a difference as show v working / racing greyhound, granted the show guys are breeding more to an almost wolfhound type standard but there just doesn't seem to be enough guys working the breed or at least breeding for purpose,............................ totally agree with sandymere.......deerhound bitches of yesteryear were 26 or 27" fast and capable probably with a wee dollop of collie in the mix but they were bred by folks using them in the field and understanding what was needed to improve the next- 156 replies
