  1. sounds like you had a good day im going for my first day beating this saturday and i cant wait. i love it, been once before on a different shoot with a mate but hopefully i shud be beating for the whole season with this shoot and just lookin forward to the people i'll meet, watching their dogs work and the opertunities that may arise from it.
  2. Iv'e just got in with one of my local shoots beating, goin for the first day this saturday Why don't you just ask around, at your local gunshop or buchers etc, if they know a local keeper. Most shoots are always looking for extra beeters.
  3. sure im not the only one really envious of you two hopefully when i finish uni in 3 years time ill be able to get some serious shooting in and venture into other field sports. anyway keep puttin up the threads, there great
  4. pretty sure it is, coz instead of hunting mink they hunt 'rats' now
  5. :11: sounds like fun i hear people on about them, my mate reckons one ran over his feet when he was night fishing and they kill alot of native wildlife theyre more common now than ever but not many folk out there killing them well not that ive heard of thats something i never understood about the hunting act (not that any of it makes sense), why ban mink hunting when they cuase so much damage and can be killed as quikly as a rat or rabbit.
  6. when i had one about 3 years ago as my first air rifle it cost me £90 and was a realy good rifle just for potting about with. I found it good for shooting rats out to about 20 yards but i wasn't particularly good then. young beater seems pretty capable with it though
  7. good on ya mate. you seem to be making the most out of that little gun and puttin meat on the table as well
  8. i use .22, but im pretty sure when i get a new rifle im going for .177 because of all the articles that i have read saying how good the smaller slug is
  9. my first air rifle was a webley sport. i only used to use it for shootin rats down by the old mill. [bANNED TEXT] distance did you shoot it at?
  10. You could try joining NOBs..(National Association of beaters).....they may be able to put you on to some local shoots, then have a word with the keeper and who knows? JOEB will do JOEB, cheers
  11. :11: :11: :11: Good idea about the society though, but i really wanted to be out there doing something. I might try and find out if there is a local shoot that want an extra hand with running it (im happy to help out with the day to day chores etc...), i just want to be around like minded people, learning and getting out there and doing what i love, regularly. Thanks anyway to all who replyed
  12. Right, ive just started a course at Loughborough University and now i am starting to get unbelievably stir crazy My situation is that i cant get home as often as i would like so im not able to go shootin with my mate anywhere near as regular as we did, and to make things worse i obviously cant take my air rifle to uni with me so looking for permission round hear would be pointless. What im asking is if anyone who is relatively near Loughborough and needs a helping hand with any type of field sport, if they could contact me. I am an extremely keen field sportsman and always looking to
  13. I believe starlings are as well. There was an article in sporting shooter about starlings and sparrows being removed from the pest list a while ago. Maybe the trap could be modified for other pests.
  14. I'm going to bang that drum again, and no doubt some people will tell me it's because I don't know what I'm talking about, but there are literally thousands of running dogs - lurchers and pure breeds - in rescue centres or just being held by trainers. Please, pretty please, don't go using entire rescue dogs for breeding yet more lurchers. The bottom line is there are too many in the world already (and I'm a guy who genuinely beleives that you could never have too many lurchers!) For one thing, most rescue organisations neuter their dogs automatically, but even if you got one directly from a
  15. If you do decide to get one, make sure you keep us all informed on the site as i would love to hear how you get on. Most trainers are glad to get rid of non-racing dogs as they just cost them money, so dont be affraid of askin. You probably already knew but ask the trainer why the dog retired, because you dont want one that has retired due to a reacuring injury, fighters or possibly non-chasers are your best bet. Gud luck
  16. Unfortunately the trainer i work for doesn't really have much time for people wanting dogs for huntin as he thinks they are all gonna be treated bad His logic, not mine. But sayin that i think going to a trainer is probably the best way because they will give you the dog for free and entire and know what the individual dogs are like. I'd say you'r best bet is contact trainers in your local area sayin you want to retire a dog, go along to look at what dogs are ready for retirement and walk them to get to spend one on one time with the dogs. From what most people are sayin all ex-racer
  17. Iv'e no pratical experience with lurchers but i do with greyhounds as i work part time at a kennels. Iv'e found this thread really interesting as im very interested in the lurcher game and have often wondered how greyhounds would fair. Just one thing i would like to add, anyone that considers getting one for working to do plenty of road work with it first to toughen its feet up because many are not road walked much while kenneled and have very soft pads. My uncles greyhound when retired got a corn in its middle toe and had to have it removed. Sure all you lads with greyhounds already knew
  18. Im the same. I do a fair bit of shooting, read as many lurcher books as i can because im mad on them but cant get a dog yet as im of to uni soon. I just like reading the posts and learning, thats whats great about this site. Thought about asking if anyone would be kind enough to take me out with their dogs or ferreting but like i said my life is a bit busy at the moment, but i did meet a bloke at the CLA game fair who gave me his number and said he would take me out so i might just have some thing to post about in a few months time.
  19. whats the grooves under mine (s410 tdr ) ? if it's for a bipob it must be a certain type of bi pod , if so where do i get 1 ? doesnt the theoben s-type come with a similar mounting rail? I think they have special attachments for the bi-pods that enables them to be fitted to the rail. I havnt a clue where you could get one from though.
  20. A great gun the S410 Just bought a harris bi-pod for mine and it has improved my accuracy no end for rabbit shooting. The gun gives you alot of confidence in your shooting ability, which i think is very important factor when in the field.
  21. shes a little stunner just out of interest, what work do you intend for her - ferreting, lamping etc? i'm curious because i really like the deerhound lurchers and would deffinately consider one for my first lurcher
  22. Im not going, but my younger brother is going with the hunts terrierman and his son to help out. Ben
  23. thanks for the positive response Its a great rifle, got mine in .22 carbine with a 3-12x44 Hawke Varmint scope. Only wish i had got it in .177 having heard so much about the smaller callibre. But sayin that its a great all purpose virmin gun, capable of close range ratting or long range bunny bashing.
  24. hi everyone I have been on this great site a few times now and have finally decided to join. I mainly shoot with my AA S410 but also used to do a bit of ferreting with my mate. I am really interested in lurchers but cannot commit to getting one at the moment. Hope to learn more about all forms of hunting from this site Ben
