  1. Hi folks, would anyone have Jonathan Darcy’s book “Dead Game, Irish strongdogs of Old” for sale. I have tried his website but the only contact is by email and I’m still waiting for a response. I need it asap for an elderly friends 80th birthday so a quick reply would be gratefully appreciated.
  2. They sure are hard to kill Phil, when were hunting them in Australia, one day my mate downed a big boar at around 150yds with a .22/250 but when he when he got close to check he was dead (the boar was only badly stomach wounded) he jumped up and chased him. Now I’m not joking but my mate had a .357 magnum in his chest holster and as he was running he was emptying the magazine into the boar but he just kept coming and only for a sheep wire fence that my mate jumped he prob would have been caught and killed.
  3. Thanks Phil for all your info. We don’t have feral pigs in Ireland but I did hunt them a long time ago in Australia, those razorbacks are huge.
  4. Thanks PhilH for all your info if I can’t source a halogen lamp I think that Convoy L21B looks the business....is it true that red light doesn’t scare the rabbits as much as white light ?
  5. Thanks for all the info folks, it looks like it’s a halogen lamp with a variable power switch. Can any give me a brand name and model that are still available cos from reading previous posts it seems like they are very hard to get nowadays.
  6. Thanks Dytkos I will look into an led with red filter. Black neck when u say a “variable one” is that an led or a halogen ?
  7. I have spent a couple of hours now trawling through previous post about lamps and it seems to be old halogen lamps versus new led lamps. The area I live in has unfortunately had a lot of houses built since I last lamped so I need a lamp that throws the least amount of light when I flick over the field but when I spot one I need a small powerful spot for the chase. I know this is a tall order but there is no true remote places to lamp within 60 miles of me so I have to sneak around like a criminal. Also are the red/green filters a good idea
  8. What’s the best type of lamp for lamping rabbits, my son has bought a nice dog (collie x beddy x greyhound) and wants to go lamping. I used to use to old Clulite lamp but it hasn’t been charged for years and doesn’t work anymore. Are these new tactical torches any good, they would be very handy and lightweight, they come with a choice of zoom or wide beam and claim to put out over a 1000 lumens. Some can have red or green filters.......are these colour filters less frightening to the rabbit that’s being lamped ?
  9. Hi folks, can any of the members on here please help. I own a Theoben MFR which has a persistent leak. I have tried several gunsmiths but once they see a Theoben they are not interested and say parts are too hard to source. I would really appreciate any info......here’s hoping. Burrowman

  11. Can any of the members please help. I have a Theoben MFR which has a persistent leak. I have tried a few local gunsmiths but once they see a Theoben they are not interested and say that parts can’t be sourced. If anyone can give me details of someone that specialises in Theobens I would be very grateful. Really appreciate any info, Burrowman
  12. Sorry but I totally disagree with most of the above comments. My main complaint is LOCATION, we were stuck away over a hill out of sight from the main crowd, like second class citizens and much too near the clay shooters. When people did find the judging area the small gateway was almost invisible and lots of people had to get over a sheep/barbed wire fence ! If the terrier and lurcher people have any chance of getting a better acceptance with joe public at least if they could see our dogs and maybe spend a while at the ringside things might improve. At the fair I couldn't find a sign to tell you
  13. Now folks Reynardman has come up with a solution, would terriers go to wet scent like foxhounds have to do in the uk since the ban?
  14. Unfortunately lads I think ye are right, but would it be worth even a phone call to the I.S.P.C.A. To "seek their permission" ? A mate of mine was recently at a game fair in France where they hold their heads high and are proud of their hunting traditions, they had a stall there about wild boar hunting where it's tradition to kill the boar with a spear and they even had the spears on display ! But we can't even put on a pretend display of our sport using the most hated vermin solely as a scent bait.
  15. Hi Folks, I put up this post on the event site but i also want to hear what the members think on here ? I was wonderin would it be possible to build an earth dog trial like they have in America at one of our shows or game fairs ? All you would need is a few lenghts of land drainage pipes some Ts and bends. It would have one entrance and maybe 3 exits, the exits would have wire mesh doors to lift the dog and it could be covered with a load of topsoil.A small charge of around 2 euro to try your dog and prizes could be given for the quickest dogs to get to the quarry. Now heres the only problem w
  16. Hi folks another season nearly over and i hope ye all had a good one.I really enjoyed invites out with a few good mates on new ground and learned a lot from watching their different hunting styles. One decision that is divided with my mates is whether to dispatch the game or not, id be very interested to hear members opinions on this topic and why. a.t.b. 17. Yes Mate, the "Flanback" prefix belongs to J.J.Flanaghan from cork city he used to work his borders for many many years and you couldnt meet a nicer more knowledgable terrier man. Regarding Borders in Ireland i would say nobody knows more. These days J.J. is more involved with showing but his son still works this line. This line came over from A.Small from Walsall,West Midlands his prefix was "Bethane". My old dogs mother was "Regina of Flanback" and grandfather was "Bethane Dillon" ive retired him now but he was as game as they come (if anything too hard). You should have no problem getting de

  21. albert my two sons were looking at plastic bb guns at at least 3 stalls throughout your show, maybe instead of waiting for reports YOUR STAFF SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE OBSERVANT
  22. Totally agree with jigsaw, the organisers bragged about the huge prize fund when the class winners in the terriers didnt even get a bag of dog food.First time i saw crossbreds in same class as borders, then insult to injury one won.€35 entrance fee for family then €6 for some of rides in the kids area, then €5 to enter in terrier/lurcher show rip off ireland still alive and well. Finally the knackers, this is supposed to be a family day out but these scumbags had kids terrified by their constant hassle of dog owners,in future there wont be enough dogs to judge because owners dont feel safe.W
