  1. maybe a little heavier id say fd
  2. I agree with this statement. Very sensible, we always give the fallow and sika longer with their mums fo similar reasons
  3. Id have to agree with gamekeepa, 243 and 308 have stood the test of time, their the most popular for a reason...they're the best at their jobs. As for your question on meat damage, my view is it doesnt matter what calibre you shoot, if you hit them in the wrong place you've got plenty of damage, hit them in the right place you have less. Best of luck deciding
  4. Hay nets tend to be a waste of time, unless you've got snow on the ground and theres nothing available to them. Maize in the form of a cob is great but they soon get wise to being able to pick it up and walk with it to eat. Then the only problem with wheat and cut maize is pheasants, they'll empty the area. We've always found the best attractant if you can get hold of it is sugar beat/fodder beat. Sugar beat is generally better because its sweeter. You need to buy the root though, not what you get in bags. This way the big roots are difficult to take away, this maybe mixed with some co
  5. perks, have you shot fallow in a park? Perks, I shoot between two and three hundred deer in parks every year on a semi professional basis. On top of that I shoot between ten and twenty wild deer as well. I can put my hand on heart and say that to cull ten to twenty deer out of a park in a day is a hell of alot harder that popping out to stalk and shoot a deer, that if you are any good will be completeley oblivious to you being there, thus enabling the shot to be taken at your leisure. You may, if lucky get two deer on the floor in a park before they're on to you. If you have any experia

  7. More out of interest really. Are any of you near a deer park, if so whats in it and do you visit it at all? Do you run one..or help out culling? For anyone thats got an interest in deer i think theyre great places to visit, give you a great insight into a deers behaviour which can be helpfull when out and about in the wild. Tom
  8. Good on you for managing them like you do. Its all about getting the right age structure in the males and then the right stocking numbers/ratios. When done properly the rewards are terrific. It helps having the right genetics from the start though for sure. We tend to shoot bucks out a little bit older than that, just before they start to go back thus making sure they pass on their genetics. Thanks Tommy. I know it's a small complaint but I only have between 70 and 90 does, limited acreage, and if I kept all the bucks untill they go back I just end up with them fighting like hell and no

  10. You may be right, I'm not sure. The Bronze that I shot wasn't in the park although I suspect that it was originally from there. There is a large herd that has it's territory around the park and these are escapies that have now gone wild. When I had the Bronze assesed it asks on the cert if it is a park or wild deer. It doesn't say that park deer are not included in the medal system. Some thing I've never had cause to think about before. Anyone else know? Park deer can be put forward to be measured and certificated, no problem at all. On both CIC and SCI, it does need to be acknowledg
  11. Do me a favour !! Do you want the post code? Is not Exmoor good enough? Seen bigger in the wild? This ain't no park deer. Currently, stood up the tip of his antlers are 9 feet from the ground. If an average height guy (5' 10") stood next to him his shoulders would be level with the top of his rump. When he stands next to a mature hind they compare to a great dane and a cocker spaniel. A guy I know who has been involved with red deer over 40 years in this area has never seen a bigger one See http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/envi...icle6865411.ece ok.....seriously, c
  12. I believe there to be bigger in the wild
  13. A deterrant with many different uses! The KNZ blocks always work well, especially after the rut when stags/bucks are desperate for salt/minerals, otherwise just as a supplement sugar beet(the root itself) is a real favourite and keeps them at the feed station. You'll have live feed cams up in the woods next!
  14. Great photos! I know of a couple of people that have used these cameras to great effect, from catching out poachers to finding Bucks that they never knew they had! The picture quality is first class
  15. know what your saying but isn't the countryside and shooting about keeping the balance which just isn't happening just now so surely something needs to change wouldn't it not be good for stalkers to take more people out stalking for less money instead of it being by large a posh mans sport thus helping more country folks to shoot and eat deer kirky The key to the population is the Female ! Hind stalking is available at far less than the prices quoted for Stags . So there may be some more opportunities in that direction . As for eating venison .There are some people wh
