  1. Surely what you're describing is experience, things the dog learns from it? It's still recall training just done slightly differently.
  2. Dog don't need to learn any of that to work the lamp , you'll get a natural retrieve if the dog believes the sunshines out of your ass , recall is the last thing I want to do on the lamp , sit , stay leave not at all , dreaming you are You talk a lot of sense casso, but a dog doesn't need basic obedience to work the lamp?? In an earlier post I believe you said it should be well mannered before entering-one of the most sensible statements on the thread. As for a 'natural retrieve', without training reinforcement a dog can stop retrieving just as 'naturally' no matter how bright the sun sh
  3. The old saying goes If breeding related dogs works it's line breeding,if it doesn't its inbreeding!
  4. Nice. Did the line throw up any physical faults Glyn?
  5. Yeah I get that. Thing is, how many keep a kennel of line bred fully 'tested' terriers they know the full genealogy of, I mean many years of, to be able to reproduce what they have consistently? Thats what a line is-anything else is scatter breeding!
  6. When you're walking a squatter up sweep the lamp over it slowly from side to side, it disorientates them and holds them longer I've found. And as Johnny m said try and get between the rabbit and home.
  7. All inexperienced dogs will run over a squatter-a moving target is the only thing that will get it chasing initially. If you cant find green rabbits.which isn't easy at this time of year,I would spend more time schooling with dummies and kick up some young squatters in September. You can achieve a lot with a torch and dummy to get a pup watching the spot.
  8. Searched FB for you FD no result to do with terriers or wales.
  9. Them black dogs are shit. My cousin who knows someone who's brother had one told me. Or was it a plummer? doesn't matter- Anyways he paid for it ffs! Good dogs are gifted by good old boys in the know, everyone knows that. No wonder terriers have gone to shit is it? Cant get a good one given for love nor money cos of all the shit been bred from. Fecking culls the lot of em. Ratting?? Any fecking cur can do that. And retrieving and beating and rabbits and tracking. And all the other things real terriers don't do. Let me know if I left out any old cliches ya bunch of fannys, I'm off to tear up
  10. They are a beautiful animal but are decimating some freshwater fisheries. A lot more common than most think.
  11. I'd snatch one of those up sharpish Fuji !
  12. A VERY good question cleanspade. (Though someone did request a name change once I'm told, god forbid lol )
  13. I agree about killing for the sake of it when there's young about, but in some areas rabbits do a lot of damage probably more so in summer when numbers are at their highest and crops are growing or they are undermining areas. So a farmer pays you to control them. You tell him to wait till winter when the damage is done? Like I said I'm not a fan of hunting in the breeding season but sometimes its a necessary evil. Good luck getting your site agent to wait till you deem it suitable to build the fictitious wall on a rabbit burrow btw! Lol
  14. Come on guys just post pics of your cocks and get it over with! 3 turns you can always slip a pup in to help you out lol
  15. Standard practice surely? Always better to lamp them COMING home than GOING home when possible. Wouldn't slip another dog though.
  16. No mate this is the first enquiry. I am meeting with him next week. I'm hoping he is going for the insurance only and get up there and clear some rabbits. Ok. I had a phone call a while back from your area with exactly the same query thats all.
  17. Just get yourself some liability insurance. If the farmer wants a pro pest controller he'll have to pay it's as simple as that. If he wants the vermin controlled free get insured and do it free! ( I think you called me about this a while ago bud?)
  18. That's good advice above..just enjoy letting it be a puppy, rest assured there will be a time forthcoming in the not to distant future when the pup will have you tearing your hair out, all the months of recall training will fall on deaf ears, have little interest in anything other than being rebellious BUT if you have layed down the foundations ie:recall, retrieving etc then it WILL not of been in vain, never lose your temper no matter how hard that may seem when it reaches this "teenage" riotous stage because it will..there is light at the end of the tunnel and it's when this stage has been a
  19. Some cracking advice on here. One of my favorites is when dog is catching and not retrieving. "it'll come mate" "give it time and the dog will get the hang of it". No it fecking wont! If it hasn't been trained to retrieve it never will. Some are natural retrievers but training will ensure it does.
  20. When you entered 2 together before did they both retrieve with the other pup there Gafer?
  21. Good advice FD. Any chance of a free pup? Lol.
