  1. Hi All, Whats your opinion on using decoys when roost shooting? Are they effective?
  2. Grey/Bull x Grey/Sal/Whip Showing decent enough promise at most aspects for me, been out with the ferrets from 3 or 4 months, still only young but I'm happy enough with her progress, lamping, daytime mooching about and ferreting. Also she's a very nice dog to have about, lovely temperament with other dogs, people etc.. Lovely looking dog that mate, you've given me a little more confidence , cheers and ATB with her
  3. spot on, i found that as well you get it alot more in muscular type dog bullxs , it not the size of the dogs it how made up physically . i had 3 bullx greys before all about 26in 70- 75 lb all would be really stiff next day from nights lamping , now my dog now Buck 1x gsd x grey a bigger dog 28in 85 lb , but far more agile and supple type dog, never gets the same prob as my bullx greys got. But what did for any dog ive had , after a night lamping, towel them down even if there dry, stretch out there shoulder and hips, and back. Then put heat lamps on in there kennel, the heat lamp
  4. Are they ok for ferreting? I can imagine they can be quite tall some of them
  5. Welcome to the site mate. Red dog is a stunner
  6. A few years ago I took my old half bull x out for her a first nights lamping of the season and after her first hard run she just went completely stiff and was basically paralysed in the field, scared the feck out of me. I had to carry the big b*****d on my shoulders across two fields to the car after where I called the emergency Vet as I honestly thought I was going to lose her (a stroke or something I thought). Anyway he advised me that muscular dogs often get a build up of lactic acid (or similar) and it can cause this sort of temporary paralysis. Anyway, lesson learned I would always make s
  7. thanks lads, l assumed it would be a long process, suppose the strategy must be assessed on the dog's reaction to them when they first see them.
  8. Anyone got any tips on introducing a mature dog to ferrets?
  9. He's a beauty green dragon. How's he to train? Ok with other dogs?
  10. Just like saluki246 wrote, I've been out of the dog game for a few years and I'm thinking of getting a pup again. I'm looking at collie/bull/grey but keeping an open mind for other types too. Needed for mostly ferreting and lamping work as well as being a family pet (wife and 2 kids to spoil it!) Any litters coming up soon? Also any general opinions on breeding to look at? P.S Sorry to saluki246 for hijacking his post a bit too!
  11. Just a quick update....took my hob in to Eastgate Vets in Pickering on Friday last week. The Vet was really knowledgable and clearly like ferrets unlike some who handle them like they are loaded 9mm pistols. I took him in at 9:30am and he was all done by 4pm same day. Having a quick post-op check up with them today. The hob is absolutely fine, I havent noticed any change in him at all, hes still as happy as ever. Highly recommend these Vets for anyone else in the Ryedale area.
  12. what do you mean by ferret proofing Electrified cage wire, barbed wire perimeter fence, moat, sentry towers... Mine, luckily have never made an attempt at self liberation but some would make houdini blush.
  13. Apologies but can I hijack this thread a little rather than start a very similar topic. I have had lurchers most of my life but have always used them for lamping or daytime coursing. As times (and unfortunately laws) change I no longer run a dog and have started ferreting with just nets. However, as most single handed ferreting men/women know, there comes a point when you could really do with a good dog, especially when ferreting long hedgerows. So I decided to look into getting a ferreting dog but my issue comes with what people suggest I need and want my personal preference is...I re
  14. Hi all I'm after 2 x 50yd quickset longnets with basket. They are £155 on EBay. Anyone on here do same quality for cheaper? I have PM'd Nelson with no reply so thought I'd try the main forum Cheers
  15. definitely Ebay for purse nets, hardwood pegs etc. I can recommend a guy called Ken, his username on ebay is 1736kend, I got spun poly purse nets from him and they are top quality and he gets em to you quick. Ebay generally has the best prices for new ferret finders too
  16. Great story and so sorry to hear about your loss. RIP Derrie
  17. Just booked him in for a vasectomy at Eastgate Vets, Pickering. £44.40 I was quoted, that's 200% cheaper than most of the other Vets I contacted! Thanks to everyone for your advice
  18. Also....while we are on the subject, what is everyone's personal preference for avoiding kits when a Jill and hob permanently live together.....? 1. Castration; 2. Vasectomy; 3. Jill jab; or 4. Neutering the Jill Finally if a vasectomised hob is used to serve a Jill, do they have to be separated after the mating while she has her 'phantom pregnancy' or can they be kept together still?
  19. Hi Mate, I'm in the North Yorks area - where was the place that did it for £40?
  20. Hi All, Does anyone have an idea of how much a ferret vasectomy should cost from a Vet, I got a quote of £100 today and I thought it should be much lower than that? Thanks
  21. Hi All Anyone familiar with this portion of the Rye in North Yorkshire? If so, any tips? Cheers
