  1. I used to breed pedigree Sheep, so came in contact with lots of Herds and farmers, the ones that keep only Cattle, that like a dug, will use a Beardie or a big border thats a bit hard, these appear easier to pick up than a Beardie, also used to see a few Border X beardies. Even years ago cant say the working Beardie was popular, in South West Scotland, you did come across the odd one. The first Beardie i seen, i heard it before seeing it, it had dreadlocks, covered in hard coo shit, which bounced across the concrete when it walked, making a rattling sound, seemed happy and well fed. The Ferme
  2. There used to be Herd not far from me, bred and worked Beardies, in South West Scotland, I could be wrong, but i think Hancock had his strain. hancock got his original stud dog remus from tom muirhead. tom muirhead started his line with a bitch from skye and a dog from beatock.tom muirhead farmed from 1956-1977 at birckleugh farm in crawford john lanarkshire. he moved in 1977 to anston farm in dunsyre lanarkshire till 1990. then moved to kirkconnel in dumfrieshire. he then retired to carnwath lanarkshire. he died in 1994. Must be a different Herd the one that i heard of, worked them

  4. When I started years ago I just used a Bank bag, tied it at the top and popped it in my pocket, with half a dozen nets, and a lurcher dog, no spade, probes, or stop nets, just traveled light, went anywhere, and if i got a pair i was happy, now with all equipment, you would think i was on an African hunting expedition.
  5. I have both, still prefer my mark one, but im a Dinasaur, the mark three,is the new one, but instead of a nice tick it sounds, like a cross between Star Treck and Hawkwind, does my head in.
  6. i also have used Hazel, im not saying plastic will take over from free wood, i was just looking at a cheap alternative. It was just a review on how a found them.
  7. I have always used hardwood pegs, never thought of using anything else, so out of curiosity, and the cheap price £1. for 15 pegs, i thought i would buy some. arrived this morning and have to say im impressed, they are strong, light, and a nice length 6 inches, complete with hole for your cord, and the bright yellow colour, makes them easy to see when in the ground, and at £1, a pop for 15, you cant go wrong.
  8. Your right Rory, any terrier should work Rat and rabbit, but there are some that dont like the sharp end.
  9. Nothing beats working, but Keeping your Dog fit works both ways, the dog naturally benefits, but so also does the owner, and with obesity on the rise this can only be a good thing.
  10. Not one mention of parents working ability,
  11. Four miles free running a day, every day rain or shine, works out about thirty miles a week.the beauty of being retired.
  12. I start my pups ferreting at 6 months, you would need your pup to be born in March or April so he or she is out in September, im not looking for rabbit catches at this age, just learning to use their nose, mark, and watch the rabbits hit the net. Then the following summer, there will be lots of very young rabbits about, that will be easier to catch, this will give them confidence, and get them used to fur in the mouth, Then when September comes round again they will be ready for the lamp, and hopefully become a valuable member of the rabbiting team.
  13. Is it not about time, the mods let Whin use his proper name, forget about bwater, bring Whin back as Whin
  14. We must have just missed each other, i walk from Sandyhills to Kippford over the cliffs as you say cookie great scenery, on my las walk a Peregrine flew past me with a pigeon in its claws.
  15. Dont know if it would work for you, as dog is 11 months, i just put a rag on a string, attached to a cane, and he chased it round the garden, i also used a rabbit skin, at 6 months old i gave him a try on a lure machine, which he chased no bother, But im sure there will be lads on here, with a lot of experience of racing, that will be able to help.
  16. Sheckle net, Border Lad. tut tut, bet you knew my old pal Shy born in. the Hoggle
  17. I didn't read the article, as i dont buy it anymore, and i am one of the few who are not interested in catching Reds, im a Rabbit man, But I do have Skycats book, which in my opinion is worth having, i have corresponded with her on here, and her advice has been good, and always replies quickly, if she was not on this site, it would be a lot poorer.
  18. If its black, thats blood, and lasts more than a day, then you may need antibiotics, from Vet, my pup had the above, and antibiotics cleared it fast, you dont need to test but i did, cause was bacteria in the gut.
