  1. Thought there might have been someone from that area with a hob to help the lad .
  2. Jills are known for killing their litters on occasion.. Very true, especially if you start disturbing them, when not long born.
  3. nonsense, you only need to hang them after using to make sure they are dry, hemp makes good nets, but stored wet will rot, I have hemp nets 30 years old, and I am still using them, there as good as the day they were knitted.
  4. was it tom muirehead ? . Thats the man worked his dogs on a farm at the bottom of Criffel.
  5. All this should have been found out before breeding a litter. You should have had a shed freezer. when I bred, i skinned the Rabbits chopped them in three pieces with an axe. then bagged them and froze. you could just put in a whole rabbit, but soon there will be flies about.
  6. Im sure the Beardies originated not far from me. There was a herd that bred and worked them, i knew the farm.
  7. Theres a nice litter of 3/4 Whippet 1/4 Collie on the sale column on this site. This is a repeat mating, there's a few photographs.
  8. Years ago I bought a pup of Phil Lloyd, traveled to hayling Island from Scotland. Came back with pup, Bus from Hayling Island to London, then train to Scotland.
  9. I wouldn't class marking as training, as they usually pick it up themselves, The easiest way, is to take a young dog ferreting, watching the rabbits hitting the nets, and using there nose, eventually the penny should drop, and they could start marking. All dogs are different, and its up to the owner to notice, I have seen markers digging at a bury and whining, this you don't want, it alerts the Rabbits that you are there. The best ones i have seen, has just been a tilt of the head, nothing more. The best marker i ever had, was my Whippet X Bedlington, just a tilt of the head, then she
  10. There are plenty of leggy Border Collies working the hill, And there are working Bedlingtons out there, you just have no where to look.
  11. Mind and take a good spade, as this time of the year you could easy hit baby rabbits, or you will end up killing pregnant does.
  12. As its only for rabbits, and you haven't mentioned a beddy cross or Whippet, so I take it you want Border Collie in the mix, What about 3/4 Whippet X 1/4 Collie, should make a handy ferreting rabbiting dog.
  13. its good that you have re homed him, but big ferrets are not for me, as i am the one that has to carry them, that's why i prefer hunting with Jills, can carry two in a box probably lighter than one big hob.
  14. Didnt think I was as rigid, when having photo taken, I was mischief making, just put it on, so you lads could drool.
  15. ah the good old day when you gathered up a few an went for a hunt Strange you said that Banter, i was talking to a Lad a month ago, who told me that's how they got into the game, they just went into the housing scheme and picked up a couple of Lurchers, one of the dogs they mentioned i knew of, he ran the streets all day and was a very good dog. anyway this lad and his mate would go of with the dogs Hare coursing, then just drop them off, when they were finished.
  16. Dont you find that some dogs go off chasing the lure, if shown to much live stuff?
  17. Changed days, years ago, on a local housing scheme, Lurchers would prowl the streets all day, and some of them were class dogs. And nobody bothered them. Hope the dog is united with its owner soon.
  18. It all comes down to the same old question. How are you going to get rid of spare kits, as you say you have already one hob, and two Jills, so if you keep one from each litter you will have 5 ferrets to work, I take it, you will have a lot of permission to keep them going in work. if I had been you, and wanted to breed, working both Jills, you would know which one was the best worker, and I would have bred from just the one Jill. If you are keeping the two jills and maybe adding more, I would get your hob vasectomised.
  19. If you have the space, i would separate the hob, then split the Jills into seperate accommodation. You also have to remember that with two litters, you could end up with 16 kits. a lot to get rid.
  20. Picked this up yesterday from Cumbrianratcher, holds 8 poles, light as a feather, this has four 5 yarders.
  21. i was in the same situation years ago, Farmer asked if i would ferret hedgerows telling me he had told the Keeper. The day i went, nearly all the burys had rabbit guts down them, heard that the keeper and two underkeepers had been out with the rifles and lamp. and obviously didn't want me there. I packed up, and never went back.
  22. First cross Whippet X Bedlington as can see, she has flung a lot to the Bedlington.
  23. Try putting a post on here, for someone in your area with a vasectomied Hob, you never know, you could be lucky. You just need to take her to the Hob, leave them for a couple of nights. then bring her back, and her swelling should start to go down.
