Good info from Darbo, when i bring a dog on, i don't have other dogs to show the ropes, and you will get advice on droppers, I don't do this either. Im sure she will come good, my Neighbour has a young Whippet Bitch Nimrodel breeding bred from pets, she does not want her dog to chase rabbits, but cant stop her, ive seen her, and she has a very high prey drive. Out ferreting is the answer, especially those crisp cold days, when the rabbits sound like an express train underground, and hit the net at speed, a few days like this, and she will get going

Just look at the Irish Greyhound breeders, they pump the grub into their pups, most feed ad lib, and they know what they are doing.
-
As has been said wait till Sept get her out with the ferrets, doesn't matter if you net up, the rumbling of the rabbits, as they break cover and them hitting the nets will gee her up. I started my whippet at 7 months, as i do all my rabbiting dogs, and as i say, let them watch the rabbits bolting, learning to work with the ferrets, and to mark. never failed with a dog yet.

I feed raw, wont bother putting up what i feed, did it too many times, but with pups I also feed adlib at the moment its Gain Puppy and Sapling, and just helps himself.

The amount of posts that come up on here on Nutrition for working Dogs. you could write a book on the subject.

I think Baw and Whin should get together and write a book, at least it would be a best seller on THL, for our non Scottish viewers, it would have to be heavily edited for Whins spelling. On the subject of Whin, if he has not already sneaked on, I think an open invitation from the Mods for his return, under the name Whin, should be a priority. The would certainly liven up the forum in the long Summer Months. Beats all these posts on Lucas, Bulldozer, Flatheed, narrowheed, and softheed.

I was feeding my adult Whippet a pound of raw minced Beef with a handful of Gain 20% a supplement and some veg.

Remember Tripe has not got the same protein as Beef, Chicken, or Lamb.

Locally years ago pre ban, only a few of us had running Dogs, we all knew each other, and would go out on each ones permission, the crack was always good, no money was ever mentioned, and we would meet in the local at night. Even if a challenge was made the owners would go out, and again the best of three, no money changed hands, the way it should be.

Haven't seen anything, but they are doing a bit of scratching, just wondered if you could use it, was a freebie from vet, when pup was inoculated.
-
I have one pipette of frontline combo for pups. Could I use it on ferrets, and any idea how many drops to put on?
-
I think we will have to a Foley cup for the wee rabbiting dogs And a match what Dug can grab three out of three hitting the nets.

Saw a few Greyhound coursing meets here, The Scottish national was held here, but no Whips. Would have loved to have seen them. was told, when the subject of muzzling the greyhounds came up, The Coursing Association would not have it, Would it have made any difference to the ban, I don't think so.

Nelson always has positive comments on his nets, I don't know what ground you have, you did mention being out with the dog and net, so i take it, was daylight, but I could be wrong. Would a 100 yarder be best, or you have different options. 50, 25, 10, and 5 yarders. I use a mixture of these when ferreting, sometimes just use three or four 5 yarders.

Who says they cant do both mate ? I do realize they can do both, having had a Whippet which I worked, I just wondered how much work the owners of Club members, would see in a Season.
-
Always wondered how much work these Coursing Whippets would have in a Season, say compared to a Lad who would go Ferreting with his Whippet twice a week.

As above colour does not matter one bit, but we all have one that we like, and others not so keen, I have never been keen on Brindled, never had one, but also like the Merles.

Argos Dog Insurance
Country Joe replied to Country Joe's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
I am now with E&I insurance, hadn't heard of them, they were recommended on Martin Lewis site, Money Making Expert, Can't really recommend them, as fingers crossed, have not needed to use them. I would highly recommend you walk away from them - there a very bad insurance and do everything they can not to pay out. http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?83420-E-amp-L-Pet-Insurance-anyone-else-had-problems if you google you will find lots more reviews from people who have had major problems with them. Thanks Chook, Had a look at at a lot more reviews, -
I also use pieces of Red Deer Antler, great for Pups teething.

Feeding Fish - Salmon......
Country Joe replied to BORDERSCOT's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
In my younger days, I would have plenty of Salmon, so my dogs did get some, sometimes, none of your farm Stuff, but proper wild. -
Lets face it competition or not, no one is going to invite strangers on to their permission, And how would you explain to the Farmer you have 10 or more strangers coming to lamp his ground.

My Son visited me yesterday with his two year old Springer X Border Collie, i don't think this Dog has seen a rabbit. went a walk on to some rough ground that holds Rabbits, it has big banks full of nettles, the dod immediately was going through the thick nettle pushing Rabbits. very impressed, if I had this dog, it would have been a useful Ferreting companion. Sorry, should have put this on a post of its own.
