First Cross Irish Terrier Whippet
Country Joe replied to bluebandit's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Over 40 years ago an old mate of mine was given a bitch pup for free, he never even saw the Dam, she wasn't big, and eventually made about 20 inches, she was definitely breeding unknown but there was Whippet and Terrier in there somewhere, don't imagine it would be Irish though. anyway she turned out to the best Hare catching dog i've seen, on tight and medium sized fields, don't know what she would have been like on big land. Saw her run against deerhound crosses, and Lurchers in the 25 inch bracket, and she beat them all. could turn on a sixpence, had great stamina, when she locked on she -
If you breed proper, and put a lot of thought into finding a really good Stud, and have a Bitch, thats a good un, and a good chance of making a good brood Bitch. then the Pups should go, even as seen on here recently with a big Litter, all have gone, no need for this talk of culling. In 42 years of hunting Ive only bred two litters, pups i put up for sale, all went really quick, at workingmans price at the time.

Did my ferts yesterday a spot of ferretone on the belly sat them on my lap, the job done in a few mins, just use my dog clippers. They are easier to do, than the dog.

Country Joe replied to delboy p's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
All the best with the sale, should make a decent Rabbiting dog, and moocher. -
Lowther is a real show, lots to keep you occupied, last time i was at the Drumlanrig show was 2 years ago, could walk round the trade stands in 10 mins, did that a couple of times then went home. no net making or different types of net, never saw anything i would have bought, apart from Simon Whiteheads beddy type Lurcher.

Don't you be adding floats and weights

Heard great things about using this Honey on wounds, although it would have to be applied where the Dog could not lick it off, but i cant get over the price, In Morrisons Supermarket yesterday one product was £15.95 a medium size jar. Anyone any idea why its so expensive, wouldn't consider using it at that price.

Gorger would know if the Dam was Lucas bred?

For Sale Working Home Wanted For Pet Bedlington X Whippet
Country Joe replied to desertedshore's topic in Working Dogs & Livestock
all the best getting him rehomed, but the way he is carrying that tail on the video, I would have my doubts he is a beddy X whippet, ive seen a few of this cross in my day, but not with that tail. But still would be a useful bushing terrier. -
Ive used tradional Hazel for years, still do, but the object of the basket system is to store your nets and poles, the smaller basket i use holds four 5 yds stop nets, using the fibreglass poles. thats 8 poles. There is no way you can get hazel thin enough, and would still hold your net. Hazel is fine with the tradional system, and fibreglass with the preset and basket. Theres room in the sport to use both, its not the case of sticking to just the one method.

We all know dogs love tripe especially the green stuff, which I used to get from my local Abattoir . It was the protein factor in Tripe compared to other Meat is lower than beef for instance is 18% I think thats correct, dont know about Chicken or Lamb. Tripe Crude protein13.5% Crude Fat 11.6% Crude Ash 1.9 % crude Fibre 1% Moisture 72% when I feed it, i mix it with Beef, Lamb or Chicken especially for Pups.

Ross what i was applying, is that taking them out with the ferrets will help them learn to mark, i didn't mean it was the one and only method, I get them out with the ferts at about 7 months, get them used to working with the ferts, using their nose, and watching them bolt, also like them to be used to working the longnets. as you know ferreting is not the the only method for taking rabbits, but to me ferreting and Whippets go together.

Sandy do really read this lot. you need to get out more.

Was talking to a local Butcher makes up dog meat said it was Hearts etc from Abattoir mixed with his own, not a great description, says its popular 75 Pence a pound. will buy 5 pounds and see what its like.

I was not in the same league as Border Scott, I ran 25 Pedigree Texels, back to the subject, over the years I have seen a few Collie X Greyhounds all bred from working Hill Collies, theres plenty where I come from, and all bred from trackers from the local flapping track. The ones I seen all took to the rabbiting game, like a duck to water. none were bred from coursing Greyhounds, and no trial Collies, just workers who would work the hill.

What you did, would have not made the dog mark, given time, getting a young dog out with ferrets the penny will drop, I don't do you your method and my Whippet was a good marker, and had a high prey drive.

I don't think it matters what they use for making up the protein, as if it says on the bag 28% then that should what it will be. What they use, well thats a secret, I have emailed a few companies including Gain, and asked a simple question, what part of the Animal or Bird do you use, in your products. I never received one answer, says a lot. I spoke to Sean the rep from Gain about what Gain to use if adding meat, he did not push, as i told him i only had one Whippet. and he recommended if using Gain to use their Gain 20%.
-
Whats the pedigree names of the Sire and Dam, thats if she is pedigreed?
-
The raw meat you are feeding has good protein, so gain 20% is what i would feed, its up to you but feeding 28% on top of Beef, Rabbit and fish is a lot of protein.

Whats her breeding?

A bit of rope through the collar

As above posts, what will be your quarry, and type of ground, as you are new to this game, i would not jump in, If i was you i would look on the site for a while, you will soon find posts of lads who have a type of dog you would be interested in. once you have made up your mind, you can then source a pup.
