  1. Sorry to hear about the dog, I lost a young Whippet last year, these thread show how dangerous the British Countryside can be for running dogs, If you don't mind me asking, what happened to the dog?
  2. Aye yer a miserable lot, and they say the Scottish are tight.
  3. Your so right mate i reckon most ferrets found wandering about are the good workers who never had a collar on when they where ferreting In my long time of ferreting, I have only come across one that was lost, I was out for a mooch with the dog on a flood banking, when i noticed a couple of rabbits bolting, soon to be followed by a Jill Polecat ferret, I was wary on picking her up, but she was fine, Got her home, and worked her and she stayed with me, till she passed away, probably one of the best workers i had. and she had no collar, when found.
  4. Went out yesterday, on a small farm, bolted four, had a look inside three were in young, packed up, that's me till September, will do a bit of Stockie bashing.
  5. Visited Bill a couple of times, he is a walking encyclopedia in nets, how to make them, best materials, and how to use them. his nets are class.
  6. Just use the search facility, tons of info and pictures, also have a look at Rabbiting dogs, and Whippet crosses on here.
  7. Sounds like educated rabbits, that know the lamp spells danger, have you been lamping them too often, or have you lampers on your ground? if the hedge has burys, maybe best ferreting it.
  8. I feed raw and CSJ but i only use a complete that is round about 20% protein, I know some use a 28% but I think this is a bit high.
  9. Im finding it harder to get on new places your up against Shooting syndicates and Lads with Hawks that are paying good money to hunt the ground.
  10. Thats the only way, i was retired also, had my last two pups trained in two weeks, you need to take a couple of weeks off work, its a hassle, but the best way.My pups were easy to train, never had a Hancock.
  11. Skycats post is good info, I also agree with beast, i never have much problem with house training, first thing i do is crate them, then I have a period of 2 weeks where im more or less housebound with the pup, taking it out after a sleep, and when it has finished eating. when the two weeks is up, ive cracked it, and the pup is more or less there.
  12. Has someone nicked it out your garden, was a good spade CJ Was out ferreting before i went to India, think i left it at the side of the road, next to my car, Bob there is no B&Q in my town. Looks like I will have to send for another Bulldog, thanks for all the posts.
  13. caught this Rabbit last week on the run, raised it in the same reed bed and ran it to the exact bury my Whippet broke his neck, but thankfully caught it 6ft before it went down, cant say I enjoyed the chase Sire MB strain Whippet, Dam bedlington X Whippet.
  14. Mike Brown gets a bit of stick at times, about not working them, the Sire of my Pup is Mike Brown bred, and im well pleased with him. His Sire takes all quarry, it appears to me if you give MB strain of dogs plenty work they excel in the field.
  15. It all depends on your free time, im lucky now im retired, so mine gets plenty ferreting winter months, or 3 miles free running daily or run along the beach.
  16. I think its the ferret, some say its grabbing them at the hole, this will be right, but in my long time of ferreting, ive had a couple, none were grabbed at the hole, or entered too young, and the rest of their litter-mates didn't peek. So what was the cause, there were nothing different done to them, they were all treated the same. the two I had came from different litters, ive only had the one in a litter.
  17. Looks like I have lost my Bulldog Rabbiting spade, had it 40 years, are there any other spades out there with roughly the same size and shape of the blade, are there any of the draper spade. with the exact blade shape? if not do you lads no the cheapest firm to buy a bulldog rabbiting spade.
  18. Have tried the longnets in two types of ground, on a hill which we do, you very rarely get hole hoppers they usually bolt at speed and hit the webs. On other sandy flat ground with a lot of burys they didn't work, as the rabbits just hole hopped. I wouldn't go out without the purse nets, but a few stop nets are also a handy tool in the tool box. As been said when I started ferreting, no one would would use longnets for ferreting. and I never saw a longnet basket, it was the traditional that was used here.
  19. In my town there was about half a dozen lads who had Lurchers, we all used Lurcher to Lurcher apart from one who always worked first cross Collie x Greyhound or 3/4 . the ferret i had came from Abbot Brothers it came up on the train in a cardboard box, I collected it from the Guardsvan, opened the box and grabbed it, when it immediately sank it teeth into my hand, and this was not a nip, he was a huge Hob mean as hell, took me weeks to settle him. I also bought my first Lurcher from the Exchange and Mart Deerhound X Greyhound X Whippet Greyhound, and turned into a decent dog. never had an
