  1. Its a good point that, your first question.I was thinking about this also.
  2. Unless I have missed something i don't see any post that state moles dig wells? The concensus of opinion seems to be that moles like to inhabit areas that are more moist in periods of drought..........commom knowledge i would have thought.....! a well round here , is something that is dug down to the water table to provide water, i,m well aware that moles inhabit damp areas of ground in dry weather as thats were the worms are, common knowledge i would have thought and worms are about % water, so does a mole need to drink everyday ? or is it more old wives tales that seem to rule the li
  3. Reminds me of a story from another molecatcher, his father once went to a job ( way outside their district ) to poison some moles. He went about applying his quantity of worms to the mole workings, and by the end of the day,the job was done.It was about a week later,he got a surprise when the client rung and announced that he still had " far too many new molehills popping up on his ground ". Anyway, a repeat visit was arranged. When the molecatcher arrived,he soon noticed that his 'strychnine treatment' seemed to have failed completely. He then had the idea,to dig over some ground in the area.He di
  4. I hadn't heard anything about that, and I am also not sure how that would work in the UK. My understanding is that mole traps are exempt from needing the type of approval that many other traps need in the UK. So I don't know how you'd make it illegal. Anyway, our traps certainly are not designed to "stab" the moles and they don't have sharpened tines. The tines almost always come around the back of the mole, and the trap kills them with a crushing action of the jaws. Well, im a 'fan' of your trap Steve,it works well.I do believe it to be the case at the guild ,that they view the ' duff
  5. Thats a new one to me i always thought they got all there moisture from there food. Every days a school day. Quite interesting that one ! But when you have multiple captures from a good run, which leads to a water source,in springtime.I suppose this confirms, their need to drink !
  6. Its common this time of year, when you usually have drier conditions.(although this year seems to be the exception !)where i am ( as has been said ), you can find fresh activity along watercourses.Burns, drainage ditches, etc.
  7. You have hit the nail on the head there Jack..........Most just see membership of such organizations as a badge that somehow makes them "Qualified" in the eyes of the public and makes them legitimate. The only qualification you require to be classed as a good molecatcher is "Experience" and lots of it. When you can look at any mole job, no matter how big, and not be daunted by the prospect of clearing up the problem then, and only then, will you be qualified to describe yourself as a professional mole trapper. Youve summed it up very nicely there, Rolfe. One of the best 'statements' ive read
  8. Well,I share the same views as the last three contributors. You all seem to have it well figured out.Its been a good thread this, ive enjoyed it !
  9. Fortunately for someone in your position, there is more 'information' available nowadays, than EVER before, about 'mole trapping'!
  10. I dont currently have any desire, to become affiliated with any mole catching organisation. However, i would like to access their forum!Perhaps i could email, asking would they consider making the forum open to non-members.Its just that i dont want to pay ( what is it anyway, £75 ? ) for the privilege !
  11. Went along to a garden job recently. (dont get too many round here) Two separate tunnel systems, each side of the garden.Even though it was wet,i could still tell the 'tumps' were stale.I suggested to him the moles may no longer be traversing there.Owner stated he would prefer if i still laid some traps.I obliged (a bit later),no fresh activity since.Suspicions confirmed, when i opened up the first tunnel system, second one was 50/50.Anyway,the end result was (you guessed it ! he-he) no moles .Its still interesting however, pondering why ? in a particular situation.
  12. I learned recently that the British traditional molecatchers register, have just 'celebrated' the 500th member to join up.Im honestly 'surprised' at the amount of people who are 'naive' enough,to pay the annual membership fee!
  13. Seeing as im usually last to try anything new, finally went and ordered a couple of yankee traplines!Banged them in on a good run, checked the next day,and hey presto !,old moley was nailed.First time too,(im slightly chuffed, ho-ho)I will try them out a few more times though, before i order anymore,in case it was just beginners luck !Initial impressions are it seems like a good wee trap, with a humane kill to boot.Goodness me, im still learning after all this time !
  14. Seeing as im well up north, and over the past few days in particular, the dreaded midges are once again on the attack.Im partial to a bit of moleing after tea, this time of year.I forgot my midge head net the other evening,(and boy did i pay the price ! ) and got eaten alive !! he-he.Got the hell outa there, and ran home.Never been so glad to get back in the motor. Is it true you boys further down south, dont suffer this problem to the same extent ?
  15. Cheers guys, and thanks for the tips, about situations where these traps can be applied. My brother who is in the states, sent me some No-mol traps, must have been about ten year ago now.I remember trying them out a couple of times, just for the novelty, and they did catch.I felt it was quite a strong trap, considering the design of it.I didnt set it according to the instructions though,i remember bunging just one in on a feed run, gambling on the mole coming out to feed or work, rather than returning back.I never anchored them with the canes either,i just replaced the cut out turf, back on top.
  16. The trapline is a trap im unfamiliar with.Im finding out more and more about it ,courtesy of this site. So im naturally curious about how effective it is against moles, compared to a duffus or talpex ? Any feedback appreciated. Cheers.
  17. All molecatchers have experienced this sort of thing at one time or another.(and not just with duffus traps ! LOL)You learn how to avoid this sort of outcome,or at least keep it to an absolute minimum.Im pretty sure also that others have offered advice on this query before,so my advice would be to SEARCH for previous posts.
  18. Yes Chalkwarren i agree. When the molecatcher engages in conversation about the mole and its habits with an interested customer, they then have a better understanding of what to expect, at the end of a mole trapping programme. It also makes for a better working relationship, this ensures you will be contacted again (without hesitation), if your services are required in the future.
  19. Really, mines are over sixteen now, and i still wouldnt be comfortable with them handling a barrel or talpex ! LOL.Clearing the moles on the STONY ground Im currently on at the moment, aint no ' doddle ' either.
  20. there was no need to dispatch her so she was let to run, I would have done the same in similar circumstances.
