Interesting post Matt, like yourself i discovered the mole spade made by chieftain forge.Liked the look of it from the photo, took a chance and sent for one.Was a bit disappointed with it though, its far too heavy duty for the job.(especially if your still a foot soldier ,like myself LOL) Its good your getting one customed.I think the guy once repaired some original 'molespuds', a moleman brought to him.He based his design on these. Forgot to ask,the 'junior' spade you acquired ,was it the one from 'Joseph Bentley ' by any chance ?

Mole catching for the water board
earth-thrower replied to moxy's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Reason i give the advice is, i annoyed a head greenkeeper for about four years,to do the moles on the course. It was always "nah, we do it ourselves" but eventually, i got the go ahead. -

Moxy, dont rule out getting yourself in there, further down the line.Keep at them,it can pay off sometimes. If you come across any of the staff ( outside squad , or shirt and tie men ) on your travels , dont be shy , get talking to them.....let them know your around.Good luck, and dont be tempted to use that " burrow blaster " of yours, if you get the job .( he-he) imagine what that will do, to them dam banks!! ( ha-ha-ha) -
Mole catching for the water board

Im a bit surprised the workers havent attempted the mole control.Up here it was always part of their duties.I believe its been sub contracted out now, for more than a decade.A keeper mate of mine ventured into commercial pest control, for a while round about the time.Anyway,he managed to pick up the contract for mole control , on the dam banks. He also acquired further work bedding in any boulders which became dislodged on the bank walls ! Just to follow on,i know the pest controller who currently has the contract,he is local to me.He told me last year that they had cut the budget for it.He sa -

Old school rat catching
earth-thrower replied to The 12...3's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Up here they refered to it as " dack ". Years ago, i remember one or two bird fanciers used it, to trap wild finches. -
The palace molecatcher
earth-thrower replied to John Keswick's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Interesting John, reminds me of the two old boys, i heard about a good while back. They became the queens " official " mole catchers, and were responsible for the Sandringham estate. Lucky sods !!! I discovered this storys still available on BBC news, England. called " Mole men by Royal Appointment ". Could anyone smarter than me, put it up on here ? LOL -
Anyone know who was giving out these population estimates, what was it again,33 to 40 million ? im certainly not fully convinced of that. ( wouldnt be one bit surprised if it was the " experts " from the molecatcher register, banding these figures about ) ha-ha.
-
Im back on a fairly local estate,i did some fifteen years ago.I pulled up a scissor trap back then, and got quite a shock, it contained a yellowy coloured mole ! So of course now im thinking, whats the chances of another ? LOL (probably slim)
-
I wasnt aware the country was suffering from a lack of mole catchers,nowadays......

Seeing that your a newcomer to mole trapping,it would not be bad practise at all, for you to reset the trap in the same place.

Yes,thats definitely the way to go.Unfortunately round here,Id have more chance finding a 'hen with teeth' than getting any PAID rabbiting work. LOL

last few years ive worked all year round, although on larger jobs its not very productive, during the late summer months. What affects the molecatching terribly here,is the weather.I have got to be in one of the worst locations, for the amount of rainfall, and this seriously hampers me.For myself it has become a 'labour of love',just as much as a source of income. Its not well paid at times, and it can be difficult to make a wage.So overall, ive found you can certainly struggle, to make a 'living wage' from it !

I was talking about the best way to utilise the product,to try and achieve maximum effectiveness from it.Personally,i wouldnt stick the tablets in this way.
-
Im going back a bit here, but i remember reading the instructions for use,on the flask (this was phostoxin, and before the applicator was thought of !)It stated you should scrape back the molehill soil to expose the shaft exit hole. Then insert a tablet or two down the hole, and heel in.I thought to myself, well i dont think i will be following that ADVICE.At the time that was the only way, they recommended applying it for moles!
-
I agree with you,you can have a better outcome with it,depending on how it is applied.I dislike it as a method of mole control,so did not want to say anything, that advocates the use of it.Personally, id like it to go the same way as strychnine, but know this is unrealistic.Well,in the short term anyway.
-
It also does the mole catcher out of a job sometimes, round my way. Some farmers i know have acquired it,and take a flask or two round with them in their quads.Popping tablets in the mole workings ,as they go ! The way some of them are, they will try and do a job themselves. Thinking its saving them, and the poor results dont seem to bother them too much, because they buy more of the stuff, the following season !
-
Same here, I really don't like having to use it but some people are naive enough to think the mole just goes to sleep, it's success depends on the soil type you use it in, ie sand/ clay/ loam/ peat, allso depends on moisture levels, traps are much more effective in my mind, Yes, its certainly not the most ' humane ' method.

Claw Traps by Flatpack - Anyone used them?
earth-thrower replied to Le Braconnier's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Very handy little trap, the fenn scissor, mate. You only have to cut out the smallest of grass sods,to fit this one in, which always helps a bit ! -
Bovine tb seems to be endemic among british cows, therefore it is primarily a disease of cattle.Badger culling may only be part of the solution, tackling the cattle to cattle transmission effectively,i feel, is even more important.
