We've got the opposite problem. It hasn't rained properly since spring. Normally we get a second spring in October when the grass becomes green again and the reservoirs start to get topped up. This year we had a week of drizzle in September and that was it. No rain forecast until at least after Crimbo. The reservoirs are almost dry. Its like a fish soup up there. For my part this has killed trade somewhat. I reckon that in France the first lot of young largely perish after being evicted from the nest at the end of January. That coincides with a two week period of -10C temps in February. Th

I know what you lads are on about, & i think yous have made alot of good points,on the matter.I believe myself, that the 'digs' & critisism, are just part of it, as is more positive banter, in response to topics ?,....Its also common on here for 'individuals', to be ganged up on ?,....(which again is bound to happen) Me myself, ive never really been interested in being part of any "in crowd", & am not concerned about being 'popular', so its relatively easy to handle any s...e, if it comes my way ! ha ha,.....Overall, THL is still a good forum, & you can learn alot, & wh

Interesting stuff, lads,...yous have all really taken to these "putanges", & no doubt they are effective ?....i tried the 'no-mol' myself about 15 year ago,set just the one, & caught with it (for the novelty!)...but the "duffus" type (if you get a decent one ?) is fine for me 99% of the time, ....when i was forced to switch, i had a steep 'learning curve' with the 'trapline', (which is not perfect ?,....lol),...but sufficed for me. I also, never seem to reach for a "talpex type" at all, these days either ?

Decent Looking 'moling Probe'
earth-thrower replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Cheers mate, i wont bother sourcing one now, then,..lol,...thats the best way, i think,...getting a probe made, to your own specifications. I heard that also, about 'problems' with the appicators ? Ive no experience with the "phostoxin" one, but remember having to use a 'talunex' one, for a brief period, many moons ago,...you had to be careful not to 'clog' it, with soil, at the end ? lol -
Well, the first look in i had on a mole catching site,on facebook,...i was confronted by a picture of a guy holding up a duffus, with a 'double capture'. Looking well chuffed, with himself,...& getting alot of "well done", comments, sort of thing. The only trouble was the poor critters where caught, so far back ! (almost at the back legs !!),....FFS!, i thought, im outa here,......

Decent Looking 'moling Probe'
earth-thrower replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
What, the one im on about ? lol,....so its not that sturdy, after all ? lol,....whats the weight, like ? (i never got to handle the one the pestie, had),.....dibbers, are like some of the other 'moling' tools, NONE ive used, over the years, have been perfect, for the job ? (i think the "beagle" ones the best ! ha ha ha) -

I was thinking along similar lines,myself,...?,...that particuar spots a fishery, too. There didnt seem to be any fisherman present, when i was there, that time & trapping should have been the only option,of course ! (i dont think hes that much of a mole trapper, ? ex-rento) Theres usually always fisherman lined along that bank, when i pass(& the traps would have been gone, when coming to check them !) Hes a good guy, whos put a few gardens my way, lol (thats how i know) -
Just glimpsed that thread there, about 'mole dibbers' (before i read it in more depth,....lol) & funny enough, i met the local 'pestie' today, who has a contract, dealing with 'mole damage' on a number of reservoir banks, round here (lucky sod !,..lol) Anyway he was 'gassing' on this slope, of one & i noticed his 'probe', (it looked a good un ?) Turns out its the one that comes with the current "phostoxin" kit, he said ?. The ex-keeper i done a bit for, i remember had the original probe (good number of years back) & that was not bad too, at the time. But this one looks like an even

Where they hanging out? Might f**k off there myself! Lol A I know where Glenn, Woodga and others hang out these day's! A lot more laid back, where you can stick up a pic or two, and not get hung drawn and quartered for it! If you like posting hunting images on facebook go for it. I dont think Colin or Glen are actively putting hunting/trapping related images on there. To hell with 'facebook' lol i was persuaded to try it, & i lasted a week, before i de-commisioned for life ! ha ha,....had a look in the trapping/hunting sites as well,& wasnt interested enough, in the

Be interesting, to hear if you catch with them anyway, mate ? ,....hes probably trying to flog them elsewhere, cause he cant use them in his 'native soil' ?,....cause as far as im aware, the 'mole' is a protected animal, over there ! lol

Could Get Used To This?
earth-thrower replied to shropshire mole's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Have you had a wet summer down your way, also ? (like up here),.....should have helped the dispersal & survival, of young moles, i would think ? lol -
Tell us more, about who upset him ? lol , cause he doesnt seem the type, to let folks get to him ?
-
Funny enough, i cant recall even seeing a wasp,lately,....although last year, there was a nest starting in my folks shed, & alot of their neighbours, had nests treated. When i call round now,not a wasp to be seen ? lol

I spoke to him (by phone) recently. He seemed ok,.............. And did he say why is he so elusive these past months? Not really, i didnt want to push him, on it ?,....i would be surprised however,...if he didnt come back on,at some point.

Got me a hold of a few 'flatpack stainless'.Havent set a half-barrel,for a season or two.Didnt quite realise, how much i missed them !,.... lol Hopefully, ive got some, i should be able to work with again ? (early results are encouraging, lol)

"don't work for peanuts",.....vital advice that, Bry,....lol

Looks like youve got things sorted, Bryn,....what with gardening/landscaping all through summer & into autumn ?,.....then you can concentrate on the moles, winter & spring,....lol Sounds like, youve got your working year organised, mate, and all the time keeping the 'wolf from the door' ? lol
-
Lovely time of year to trap though don't you think. It can be, mate. Only thing up here though, is you often have to contend, with the dreaded 'midges', lol
-
Aye, and the grass generally being up, also, ive often wondered if theres just more food around for them, in summer ? as they dont seem to work the tunnels, as hard,....
-
Different when its a really dry summer,up here.Alot less activity, on silage/hay ground (hardly worth it !),....i find 'summer moling' is far from ideal, anyway ?,cause theyre not all showing,or working hard,on the farmland, then. But by mid-November, all the moles in a given area, are 'showing' ?......well, on my 'patch',that is,...lol
-
Its been quite a wet summer, where i am.Seems to encourage a bit more activity, on the cut ground ? Mostly 'surface runs',.....
