Is she too old, or did I go too hard?
Pembshunter replied to Pembshunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
i agree cod liver oil is good for coat and general health but it cant turn old has been into good dog can it?lol. he should have waited til aug-sept and got her right first, hard ground, unfit, stiff and 6 yr old, different trying her out on one run, but four hours is too much especially when they are keen, my dog is 9 and still catching long ears on fen never give him anything except dry food and water and lots of raw hare, but he is run right and kept fit, anyway i think the fella should get rid of dog and get ferret lol. Well I still have her and intend to keep her, I havent run her -
I know a fellow local to me has a few of these, I was just wondering are they just an aviary bird so to speak, or can they be flown and brough back to the glove etc? Obviously no good for hunting, But flying them might be nice!

Thanks, usually one night a week is all we go anyway...A short night with a few runs is fine, But a long night seems to be hard on her -

Yeah, it happened before when we had a big long night...She was back to normal in 2 days, So maybe just give her little often exercise to get the fitness up for next season? -

Dry greyhound 28% protein, occassionally some other stuff, odd raw egg etc. I didnt think that would make a difference....Does anyone know why she is so sore today? Or was it just too long for her? -

had much rain round your way..????? Quite a lot why? -
As some of you know, I got given a 6 year old collie whippet by a bloke on here, I took her lamping just a few nights as I really couldnt wait until the season....The guy did tell me that she hadnt done much for 2 years but was keen, and she sure was, But I was outlast night for four hours, we got a lot of runs, but no kills as the ground we where on was in round close to the rabbit holes and they where off as soon as I knocked on the light, although my hat went off to her as she twisted and turned across the top of a warren after one, it was very impressive, she caught it right at the edge o

I was picking up some food the other day for my new dog, And the guy at the till starts asking me what kind of dog I have etc, It turns out he was into hunting and has been keeping lurchers and ferrets for years and lives quite close to me, so as we both where hunting alone, we agreed to get a few days and nights out on each others ground in the coming season, While we where talking he told me to leave the JW ferret food to one side and get them a big a of 28% protein greyhound food and along with the odd rabbit and whatever I shot it would do them fine....Apparently he's been feeding his ferr

Im after a lamp, I have looked at both Cluson & Lightforce locally....The man in the shop said both where as good as each other, But Im not sure, I liked the dip switch on the Cluson, I know this can be obtained on the Lightforce with the dimmer, But its more expensive, I feel that the Lightforce is a better lamp all round, But again...Im not sure, But I know people on here will have experience of both, Any advice? The overall price difference isnt massive

How long until I take her lamping?
Pembshunter replied to Pembshunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Theres your answer! Just what im doing at the mo! Ok, so should I chance him off the lead and recall him? Im thinking it might be all good until rabbits are involved! -
After my huge dog adventures which I posted about...I have ended up with a 2 year old dog, trained! Thanks to a member of this site who wishes to remain nameless....I have been given a dog that is lamping, ferreting, and everything else in between! Shes only been here 1 week, I havent let him off the lead yet, but I really dont think he will be any trouble anyway....Although it isnt the season, Im keen to take the little lad lamping a night, But Im bloody nervous of him running off after a rabbit and loosing him! I havent ever lamped with own dog and Im very keen to try...everyone has to begin

Hi, I have been offered a JRT pup and was wondering if would be any good as a ferreting partner, I know he would be good for marking, but can they do much else? Im new to dogs as you can tell, But Im really keen to learn!

Can I ask what a bushing Terrier is?

Guys, thanks for all your kind replies...My title "My fault or the dogs" was wrong, It is obviously in no way the little dogs fault whatsoever, because as a lot of you have stated, he was obviously treated badly. I just became very confused because I was thinking was I doing something wrong or was this just the way dogs where to begin until they settled etc, To be honest, I has put me off my dog idea a little, It is very unfortunate what has happened, I had so many hopes for Charlie and imagined him tagging along to next seasons ferreting every saturday, and walking him around the fields

Ok, you probably all saw my posts about Italian Greyhounds etc...I have wanted a dog for a long time but lacked a big open garden, Well from what I have read and saw, My space wasnt that terribly small and the dog would be getting a lot of exercise, so should be ok I found a whippet lurcher, not even a year old, the man brought her to me, he said he had worked him a few times and he was coming on well.... After the man left, I began to notice the dog extremely nervous...I mean, to the point where if I made any sudden movements, he would lye down and yelp, Later that evening, I decided

I live in quite a very small house with little garden and have always wanted a lurcher, But unfortunately just dont have the room, I have been reading about Italian greyhounds and that they can be used for working, Has anyone seen or heard of them working? They look very tiny to even take a rabbit! Good looking little dogs though Cheers

I was just reading a book the other day..."The Wild Gourmet" If I ever happen to meet the wild gourmet, After smacking him one, I will tell him that his theory on ferrets is wrong, I quote from his absolutely rubbish nonsense book: "Ferrets have a well deserved reputation of being vicious and smelly" What utter nonsense is this City Boy, Hugh Fearnley Wannabe, Gap Year Publishing deal, Lets go to the countryside and eat animals and become overnight experts, talking about, People like this make me sick - Wild Gourmet has obviously never been properly acquainted with the friendly & b

Ferreters are no better than Badger Baiters
Pembshunter replied to Pembshunter's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I always liked the thought of the country squire ferreter! But now these townies have made me out to be a right lout. -
There was a big discussion today at work about recent arrests in this area over Badger Baiting, when a lady I work with and a few others declared that I was no better than a badger baiter chasing rabbits with ferrets and It has pissed me off to say the least...Im now starting to doubt my own sport...This isnt right, surely us ferreters are sportsmen compared to these hooligans who dig badgers? I do hope people in general have a better opinion of us than thinking we are like Badger Baiters

Bulls***, These guys where caught out before! They gather up rabbits for days before and stick them all down the sets before they film, and then keep putting them down again after catching them, "JCR CREW" And A Team music....Would any serious ferreter go through that, really....Come on now
