  1. its horses for courses i think my 1st was colliexgh and ive had salulixs and a 1st x bull my current two are wheaton/whipxsmithfield/grey and a collie greyxgrey/bull both still young but i think i have a decent combo. somthing small and nippy for bolted bunnies and somthing a bit bigger for the longer slips and for retreiving my .222 shot foxes and blood trailing any wounded deer.
  2. The polecats were quite common in Aberdeenshire when i was in that area for a couple years not to far fae dunecht. I was thinking the stoat/weasle/ferret/hedgehog line as you mentioned the wee holes in head as an owl just crushes & brusess the whole head. Is there any type of vermin that there isnt millions off round about dunecht!? lol do you or did you go to nhc thurso
  3. I tend to agree with alimac on this one ! If they can reach their second breeding year its supposed to be a bit better ? But not many make it that far . Even a good wild hen has trouble! between vermin and weather she's lucky to get 1 or 2 out of a brood . I agree with the above pheasants are not good mothers with so many varying factors which can influence the rearing of the brood the odds are always stacked against them.
  4. what size of sections does it come down into and where are you mate. cheers steve
  5. but then would any of us be allowed to keep a lurcher?? i really doubt it in the old days you'd have to pay x amount for a dog which isn't fair as we wouldn't want a class diversion,, however the license idea is one i agree with as long as it was done fairly and equaly, i would say that you'd need to pass a test with a pass mark before you can own a dog, do a course on canine behaviour and their diet needs etc, maybe do some experience at a dog rescue kennels - help the kennels and learn about dog body language as well as breeds, grooming needs etc as long as you had a knowledge on d
  6. totlly agree with the above if you have a decent natural breeding stock on the land give them every chance at breeding by getting into the vermin especialy the corvid family to give them best chance at nesting time. a bit of additional feeding will help them rear their chicks and keep them on your ground. atb steve
  7. No need to rag any pup best option is a ball of screwed up paper get the pup retrieving this first then a rabbit skin rolled up with elastic bands around it to hold it in shape then as the pup grows wrap the skin around a plastic bottle this way you can increase the weight of the dummy by adding water/sand to the bottle. i totally agree with the above if you want live to hand dont play tug o war or raggin the pup should give up its catch without fuss although my first lurcher hardly bothered with retrieving balls, dummies etc but every bunny and hare she ever caught was brought back al
  8. i know im probobly leavin myself open for abuse here but ive had a 3inch mag escort for bout 3 yrs i cracked the fore end by over tightening the end cap but that is the only problem ive evar had its never jammed on me once no matter what shells i used from 28g clay busters to 56gm fox killers i know the evidence is overwhelming against but i got mine new for 300 an it was a bargarin, even my mates love using it on clays and they shoot o/u's all the time. i must have the only good ever made.
  9. do you still have the motor mate if so how much and where are you
  10. R.I.P. Sam, remember the 15 years. RIP ol boy. I feal for you mate my old bitch passed on this year she was the same age and i cried like a baby.
  11. depends if your mainly a daylight or darkness shooter days mostly 3-9x40 is good if at night get one with a 50 objective lens, simmons do good scopes the white tail classic range or even nikko sterling platinum range got one on my .222 and its good if you shooting at night you dont want a coloured lens. if your buying the gun new see if you can get a deal on the scope at the same time and dont be afraid to haggle even in shops they usually come down a bit.
  12. my heart goes out to you he looked a belter sorry for your loss.
  13. i may be wrong and i hope i am but if you send to media how interested will they be when they find out there mostly workin dogs belonging to us big bad hunters they will probs think its antis liberating our dogs from a life hunting and support the feckers. i dont trust any press outside our own publications, they are to scared to be seen in any way supporting our way of life. i hope im wrong and something has to be done thats for sure to try and reach a wider audience to make people aware of what is goin on. if it was loads of pampered pets goin missin it would be all over the news and a publi
  14. i use a combination of both i dont exactly rub there nose in it but show what they have done make them aware they have done wrong and take them outside you need to whatch the pup and you will soon see the sign of when its about to pee or poop usually they kinda start to sniff a particular spot quite often where they have done it indoors before and mabye take a few steps either side of the spot watch for this and get it outside dont carry it out get it to follow you quickly and before it knows its outside doin a pee this worked for my last few pups some learn quicker than others. be patient and
  15. the raw food road is the best route for a growing pup however if you have to go down the complete food road which i have had to do myself on occasion i give my pup bone builder powder supplement from pets at home i think it helps with bones and especially there teeth or calcium tablets my terrier loved them an would come runnin if you shook the bottle swear he could chew through a brick wall these days have seen smaller teeth on alot bigger dogs. if you wane feed raw minced food i would still put some of the powder on it. im sure some will say its a pointless addition but i think it helps i on
  16. At least I dont have to pay people to be my friend/bodyguard you fat coward as we all know the infamous plummer was the king of in breeding just read some of his books, just dont do it to close a relation to relation, personally i think just put the best to the best unrelated never any genetic problems then. im sure there are plenty guys on here with excellent stud dogs.
  17. i do things slightly different i introduce the stop/sit whistle whilst teaching them to sit when they are young. say sit then blow the sit whistle and use the hand signal at the same time but do the rest the same as the other guys always keep it a game and dont let the little bugger try an second guess you my present cocker was a wee shite for trying that one. for me recall and sit are the most important lessons to learn as they generally need no encouragement to hunt its getting them to stop hunting that the hard part. spaniels are great dogs and make excellent gundogs be patient and calm at
  18. you can get push fit leather recoil pads that add about an inchin length to the stock and similar design silicon plastic ones that add aout half an inch so whichever is bestfor the fit. i think they are under £30 so its a good idea which could save expensie stock adjustment or it could help you establish the adjustment needed. atb rob the above are good solutions remember not to get a rubber pad as it will stick to your jacket and prevent smooth mounting of the gun.
