  7. my gundogs an terriers live out all year round in wooden insulated kennels with plenty bedding and seem fine the gundogs all live together 2 cockers, a lab an a pointerxlab but all get well dried before they go back in a a warm meal, Im afraid my running dogs live in the house my collie/gh x bull/gh would live out easy as he has retained a bit of the beardie coat but the wee bullx bitch suffers in the cold plus being in the house help stop the buggers getting nicked which seems to be happenin alot.
  8. been out with the lurchers after nt shift nowt about so time for some kip shortly

  9. i cant see my profile properly

  10. ive just got another cocker just recently and im looking forward to the challenge of training her as it will be a challenge as spaniels can be. patience is the key and luckily the little buggers are usually quite greedy so to start with treat traing will get you going but phase out the treats asap for just praise reward well thats what i do. what do you want the dog to do? beating, picking up or rough shooting working for you in front. it looks a bonnie pup and you have 2 photos of it staying still which both my cockers find hard to do, so thats a good start. good luck with the pup.
  11. this is my lad a broken coated red merle with partial blue eyes hes in my picture thingy at the side i have no idea how to post pics now. 4 out of the litter of 7 were merles 2 red dogs a red bitch and a blue bitch ive got photoes somewhere il try and find them, a litter i bred.
  12. my parents have had the oes all my life and seen them change alot in 32 years the 1st was a wee dog with a shorter coat the next was bigger and a bit mental was a bit dog aggressive and the 1 they have now is huge always looks starvin and is thick as mince with so much hair it runs into the house wall, all were slow with the gait meantioned, ive had lurchers for 15 years and my 1st had beardie in it and is a much better option i think. the coat of any oes x would be murder to keep debri free whilst out huntingand the buggers bark alot.
  13. both my dog hit cover when on there quarry they both have bull in them but my dogs dam was a collie x and she hit cover just the same but with more thought she rarely got injured but her son has been stitched once and stapled up twice and hes only 3 all from running on into the cover. its a double edged sword it certainly does increase the catch rate but also the vets profits. the hunting brain talked about is great my old bitch would hunt rabbits up in clumps of grass, rushes etc point where they were then dive in an grab it, was great to watch and very energy efficient.
  14. will be goin tomorow lookin forward to the new venue and a bit of fun hope there is a few trade stands, need a new jacket. puting the lurchers in the show as well.
  15. ours get 3 to 6 miles nightly road work on the lead and varying amounts of free running with the rest of my pack (2 terriers, a cocker and a lab) so they run and play toy fight etc doing trebble the distance we do. i have access to a farm which is right on the beach so im lucky, but to get them match fit i think good diet is important and when the season starts out as often as possible.
  16. my first lurcher stayed out an never had a bother she now lives in cause she ancient an retired my current 2 live in for the reason meantioned above and i live near a main rd. makes no difference to hunting but i think there is a bit better weather resistance in an outside dog, i know my bullx bitch feels the cold an wet till she gets goin whereas the beardie/greyxbullx has a beardie jacket and is a bit better.
  17. as you have said yourself the pup was with the bitch till you got her then you have been spending alot of time with it now for the first time its being left on its own its going to cry. the radio is always a good idea but start with leaving the pup for short periods of time gradually getting longer it will relise that you are always going to come back for it. if it persists there are other thing to try. atb steve
  18. sorry for your loss. loosing a good dog is always a wrench, hope the pup turns out for you, her blood will live on in the whelp all the best with it and your right to say they are never forgotten, just remebering mine as i write this and i can feel myself going all soppy whilst the two on the furniture lie sleeping oblivious to the shoes they have to fill. atb steve
  19. how is the dogs retreiving in an enclosed environment ie the garden, personally i wouldnt have the dog out running this early after getting it, i would still be bonding with it making sure as mentioned before that it knows its place and it knows im the boss. im sure your eager to see if the dog does what you have been told and your getting a glimpse that it does. go back to basics for a bit play with the dog get it retreiving consistantly in the garden or small enclosure. hope this helps. steve
  20. the dog in my avatar is that cross well hes border/beardie colie / grey x 3/4grey bull hes 3 1/2 hes not quite got the blind bullx courage like my 3/4grey bullx bitch and will use his head when running and tackling quarry im strarting to really like this cross as i had his mum who was the collie side of his breeding and found she lacked a bit of bottle at times so i put a bullx over her. his stamina is good and he has good jaw power as well as a brain. the only down side he has is his vocal ability but thats the missuses fault she talks to him an he talks back. but no one will get in my house
  21. zapping a dog when its doing something it shouldnt is fine but when its doing something where in another situation it is fine then you have a problem. best not slip the dog if you think there might be a problem. i got a bull x bitch off a lad i know, told it was stock broken found out it wasnt the hard way but after the collar treatment she is good just need to use them correctly. dont zap it for chasing things that normally it would be allowed to.
  22. i have a bitch same name stella an she can jump fine when she wants but will stand to get lifted over (i dont lift her i let her get through herself) more often than jump my dog in the avatar will clear all in front of him, like his mum before does it for fun but the wee bullx bitch will rather go through or under. if you have stone walls near you just get over and walk on or try chucking her fave toy over or whatever you use for retreive training. make it fun another dog can help in this situation if it jumps well. nice lookin bitch in your pic hows it bred my dog is similar.
  23. mabye the wet food has went through him and made him feel a wee bit ill. try the rice and fish or cooked chicken diet. my old bitch had to have a raw egg in her food when she was little then got better as she aged an as you have his brother there will be a bit of competition. switching straight to wet food [bANNED TEXT] they have been on dry often gives them the shits and did you change the type of dry food they were on. some are more sensitive to diet change than others. if the shits last on the rice diet get it to a vet. hope the pup comes good and happy future hunting.
