Derry Argue has a video and it show's how to tackle this problem using planted "dizzied" pigeons and a long line on the dog. I'm sure if there's anyone around you who trials "pure" pointers and setters rather than HPR's they'll help you with this in no time. I think it's basically a case of over-eagerness in the dog and they just need to learn how close they can get. Make sure you spend plenty of time on retrieving training as Brittany's need no encouragement to hunt but some of them aren't overly enthusiastic retrievers so it can need some work.

Well done mate, There's nothing I enjoy more than just a wonder about the fields and just seeing what you find. I know looks aren't important but that dog is just stunning.

Did anyone read the comments posted on youtube about the video. There are some awful pr#*ks out there!!! And to make it worst, some other people are getting sucked into the slagging match and making it worse.

I have a 1993 Daihatsu Fourtrak at work and it's as rough as a dog's rattly bits, but it's indestructible. It's been rolled, ploughed into the front of a house, been in a canal and rammed by bulls (none of which involved me) but it's still going strong and never gets bogged. No heating, no radio, mpg is brutal and handles like a boat on the road, but loved by everyone. We also have a new Mitsubishi Warrior for longer road trips so the Daihatsu will stay until it falls apart. Worth every penny that it cost 14 years ago.

I have an electric collar and the only thing I use it for is stockbreaking. I don't like them very much but if it's a choice between an electric collar and a dog getting shot or someone's stock being damaged, then I'll choose the collar every time.

FAC TICKET COMING IN THEW POST NEXT WEEK !

DS, I'm pretty sure that's the Anschutz model number, and not the price. -
Who needs anti's when we go out of our way to shoot each other down.

I work in the horse industry, and spend lots of time at horse sales every year. I would not take a horse from a fair if I got it for nothing. At a proper sale you have some comeback if it goes tits up. You can often pick up a nice quality horse with a minor flaw quite reasonably, rather than being robbed for a pig in a poke.

We had a lakeland x whippet a few years ago and he was superb. We never left him at home, regardless of what we were doing, bushing for foxes, ferreting, lamping etc. He probably wasn't as good a lamper as some crosses with more sighthound, but he caught us plenty. Likewise he wouldn't have talen a fox single-handed but he's sure as hell try his best. Fantastic little dog, I'd give my right arm to have him back.

Belt Pouch for CluLite Battery Pack ?
pointer28 replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
DS, Clu-Lite are imported by a company in Co. Laois. I'll try and find their details and send them to you and they will tell you directly if they have what you want or not. -

I know the clay shooters are big into their shades, I think yellow is a very popular colour with them. Perhaps some colour that would make other colours such as fox red, or bunny brown stand out better against a predominantly green background. Or am I completely on the wrong track here? Seriously though, x-ray specs would be great, even if we never brought them hunting

Patterdale cross breeding with Staffs
pointer28 replied to Pipey Magregor's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Sorry Pipey, I meant that completely sarcastically, please don't waste your money on my recommendation! Check out Sean Frain under reviews. The two best terrier books are The World of the Working Terrier by David Harcombe and Dig Deep, Throw Well Back by Jonathan Darcy. Even though they're both mostly about digging, they are still well worth the read. -
A few Newbie Patterdale questions
pointer28 replied to Pipey Magregor's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
They're two nice looking dogs and your pup is a smasher If possible I'd introduce your pup to ferrets as soon as possible, but try to get the right ferret that won't attack the pup. That was my mistake, instead of making him scared of ferrets, he now holds a grudge and despises them even more. -
Patterdale cross breeding with Staffs

Buy Sean Frain's book "The Patterdale Terrier". That'll tell ya absolutely everything there is to know about Buck/Breay etc. and what "came from the loins of" which dog, and who "begot" who. Now, I'm just gonna sit here and wait for the replies. -
A few Newbie Patterdale questions
pointer28 replied to Pipey Magregor's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
My terrier won't eat raw chicken for some reason, although he'll gladly eat raw mince beef. If I stick the chicken wings in the microwave just for a minute he'll eat them no bother. They're not cooked, but just the rawness gone off them, turkey drumsticks are great too, lots of meat on them and the dog will spend ages stuck into them, while he'll eat chicken wings in about 30 seconds. Chicken bones in the wings are OK as long as they're not cooked but I only give him those when I'm there, just to be on the safe side. Mine lives in the house and it does him no harm as long as they kno -
He's a cracker!! I love border crosses, have one myself, I find them a bit more sedate than full lakelands/fells. They inherit a bit of sense from the borders, especially if you want them for bushing, ratting etc rather than pure earth work. In saying that, if I was after a pure digging dog I would go for a patt.

Check out Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's website, he gives some advice on which breeds are easiest to keep and are best suited if you want eggs or eating. Worth a look anyway.

Ferret and terrier finder, plus we sometimes use hand-held radios if we're bushing a very big cover. Other than that, not much other than modern clothing materials instead of old types.

If there's a stableyard nearby, bring it there and sling it on their dungheap. Horses produce so much shit that your little bit extra won't make any difference. Plus, to pay them back you could offer to do some ratting for them. Plenty of those little feckers around stables too. That's what I do, all the ferret and dog crap gets thrown on the dungheap. Could be a win/win situation.

How do you reply to critics of of ferreting?
pointer28 replied to mooster's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
If you don't like it, don't do it! But don't tell me what I should or shoudn't do. -
Feckin' brilliant !!

No way am I a vegetarian, I love meat! But I seldom eat chicken or pork because I don't like the way that they are mostly reared. The vast majority of beef and lamb is still reared in a field as nature intended so I don't mind eating that. I would love to rear a pig properly outdoors and see what the difference in taste is because I don't think that I've ever tasted "proper" pork.
