your nets sound cheep ,hope they work well for you . only advice i would give is take a few tent pegs with you, so you get your bottom running line to the floor (were the grounds uneven ). then just do a set of burrows at a time and run the net the whole way around the area until you get back to were you started ,just because you have 2 x50 yd longnets doesnt mean you have to always use both ,if your doing hedge rows on your own its donkey work, if you try and do 50 yds each side on your own (i know ive tried it ,lol). always TAKE EVERY BIT OF DEBRIS out of your net when putting it back in

welldone beddiwhuppet, your dog was a worthy winner ,and ran its heart out all day ,your dog looked in great condition and was a credit to you ,the 64 dog stake on saturday saw lots of good dogs and close finishes ,and a worthy cause raised a few quid in the process.everyone who attended had a great day .........atb......jim

Are 2 Jill's enough for big warrons
jimster68 replied to JamieLeeParkes's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
if youve got plenty of big warrens to do ,then you need a few more ferrets ,saves waiting around and your going to get the rabbits to bolt alot easier ,two ferrets running around a large warren will have a right job on getting them to shift ...........jim -
welcome bud ,lots of good info on hear and quite a few people who know their stuff and are wiling to help a fellow ferreter out ,but beware theirs also a minority who just want to argue and ruin other peoples posts ..............atb .....jim

put some vinagar on your hands ,if they nip they soon learn that fingers dont taste nice ,also let go on the floor and gently pick them up again ,do this a few times per day so their used to being picked up (not just handled )............jim

nice write up ,and its good to see a young lad taking interest and getting out into the fresh air ,bet he was well pleased when his ferrets bolted something . atb.....jim

i think if greyhounds would have made better working dogs people wouldnt be breeding lurchers in the first place , i raced greyhounds and they were a nightmare to keep sound even running around a sand track ,most greyhounds are past thier best or retired by the time thier 4 yrs old (and probably 75% dont even see this age). most only race once or twice a week and then need a week to recover as they nearly always come off the track exhausted ,i think the biggest downfall for a greyhound in the field would be its speed as the greyhound has been bred to get from A TO B in the quickest time possib

always feed before handling, then cover your hands in strong vinagar ,ferrets soon learn hands dont taste nice ....has worked on any nippy ferrets ive had .....jim

first of all feed your ferret before handling ,then rub your hands in vinegar and pick up your ferret ,if your ferret trys to nip or bite the taste of vinegar will put it off .ive done this before and it worked for me ....jim

i dont catch mega amounts of rabbits ,but i dont have any problems getting rid of them either, heads go to the ferrets ,bruised rabbits are frozen before being fed to the dogs ,and eaters are snapped up by family and hard up locals i can easily sell 10/20 rabbits per week i normally sell for £2 each gutted and skinned ,this pays for petrol and a bit of equipment ,i also sell un skinned rabbits for £1 each if i catch quite a few and sell them to one guy who trades them for a pint in his local (so hes actually getting £3 each lol ) . at the end of the day its not a buisness for me but everyone l

good day / bad day (new ferret required leeds area)
jimster68 replied to jimster68's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
no dean it wernt him ,he was a cracking worker but at the back end of last season i rehomed him as i had to dig him out twice after he collapsed ,first time he did it i gave him 6 weeks off, then i had to dig to him again and i was going to despatch him .until i found someone who wanted him as a pet ,it seemed a pity to destroy him as he always gave 100%.last i herd he was being taken out on a lead and living a happy life ....jim -

good day / bad day (new ferret required leeds area)
jimster68 replied to jimster68's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
dog aint ever harmed a ferret before and hadnt touched one all day ,thanks for the sympathy although it wasnt what i was after .ive helped a few people out when they needed it and i know the forum aint full of knobheads and theres a few who might be able to help out . thanks for the kind comments .....jim -
i had an invite out to a friends property today to help find and despatch a few problem bunnys ,i knew with all the cover about we were up against it but that wasnt a problem as today it wasnt about numbers ,just a good oppertunity to get out and make sure all my equipment was working correctly and give the ferrets chance to blow a few cobwebs away.anyhow i was joined by a friend and thier terrier and another friend with a couple of lurchers to hopefully catch any bolters , we went looking for any obvious signs af a warren or burrows that were being used . this turned out to be almost impossi

thats ferreting bud ,some you win some you loose ,on the up side things can only get better . my first day out last year was just the same and ive got a little ferreting job this week thats probably not going to be much better than yours ,all the same i just cant wait to get started .......jim

all my ferrets are workers ,but i still put a few different thing in the cage to stop them getting board and keep their minds active ,ferrets like to play and investigate anything new ,i put anything from bits of pipe ,cardboard tube ,old dried leaves for them to dive about in and play . i also save any old tshirts or towels for bedding and just throw them away when i clean them out and replace with another . nothing wrong with stopping ferrets from getting board .

what would you give the quickset nets out of 10 ?
jimster68 replied to fox assasin's topic in Longnetting
long nets get 10 out of 10 from me ,i cover all types of ground and the only real draw back ive found is if theres a lot of debris about it can take some time to to clear from the nets ,apart from that i wouldnt be without them ,there quick to set out and no more rolling around under bushes and scrub with purse nets only to find the rabbits fecked off from the only hole youve missed ..........jim -
deffo agree with above ,ive only ever seen ferrets&kits hiss when their frightened or in fear , i got a kit of a lad on this site the other day and when i put it in with a few of my other ferrets it started hissing and jumping backward when they went near it . soon settled down and fitted in , just handle the kit every day and it should come good.........jim

done a massive embankment around a brickworks last year well over 500yds long and in some places 30+feet high it was a total nightmare ,covered on blackberry bush and thick scrub ,the embankments were very sandy and deep. we had 6 men 2 dogs 10 ferrets and 4 longnets ,and managed about 10 to 15 rabbits per outing ,ferrets were coming out all over the place and rabbits just hole hopping ,all the warrens were linked ,very hard crap ferreting ,but out with a good set of lads and had a good laugh its not always about numbers . managed to find a couple of pics fron the day......jim

i feed dry in the summer months and when it gets warm the ferrets drink loads of water ,just check the ferrets have plenty of fresh water avalable at all times and when it starts to get a little cooler they will drink less.
