I get to see the barn owls most days over our local meadow. And try to get a photo with every visit which is quite often. Barn Owl (tyto alba) hunting by Martin Billard, on Flickr

I have seen a few discarded largish white egg shells over the last week whilst out with the mutts.

Gav Thinking again about your post. I guess most modern cameras will give you some sort of result but I really would suggest a DSLR even a second hand older model. I started on Canon but there are other brands. As I said in my first reply birds are small and not easy to get close to so a 300mm lens or zoom to that focal length will help. Spend as much as you can and get out there. I sold my best shotguns for cameras and have many pictures to remember them by.

A flying tennis ball, good to get one in flight especially through a tree. I had a 20 second break from Barn Owls tonight Not a Barn Owl by Martin Billard, on Flickr

Pinnacle brilliant, have you ever or do you "squeak" them so they come really close? its happened twice for me no photos just the memorys brilliant. Thanks I will give it a try but they seem to pretty close if I am in the right spot which is usually away from bird watchers chatting too each other.

I have been popping over to the meadows most evenings and with three owls, there is quite a bit of action. They are so magical and not that shy of people, they quite often fly right past dog walkers though my closest encounters have come when tucked down is scrub or under a tree with a camo coat and hood up. He started looking a lot bigger when he was walking towards me, I actually started to wonder would he run at me when he got to about 20ft away. I have seen reds charge at people before.

It really depends on what you want to spend. Birds are mostly small and move a lot so a DSLR and 300mm or over would be my choice but it will cost and if you are not used to a proper camera it will get in the way, be heavy but it will take proper pictures with practice. Spotted again by Martin Billard, on Flickr I have ended up with a Sigma 150-600mm zoom usually at 600nm on a Canon 7Dii but I am a bit addicted.

I have two but usually take a Canon 7Dii and a Sigma 150-600mmC lens with me most of the time for walks and wildlife the other one I only really use for sports. Most DSLR cameras will be able to be used for in flight shots but I am not sure about compact or mirrorless systems as their auto focus is said to be slower. I have also been taking wildlife photos for years, a lot of the time with my dogs in tow on leads so almost one handed, practice does help. It is best to use as higher shutter speed as possible but it is a balancing act especially for owls at dusk. I usually shoot wildli

Thanks for all the comments I took this last night and my only photo in over an hour waiting for them to show and be close enough. Sunset Barn Owl with prey by Martin Billard, on Flickr That is a real shame. Hopefully our 4 will do well this year and a few more will come from them. If only. I have spent hours at this meadow over the last few years and am really happy to see just one. This was a special night with every shot I could hope for except the prey shot hence the return last night to get one but it was nearly dark when I got it.
