Emperor And Brilliant Emerald Dragonfly
PINNACLE replied to PINNACLE's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
Thanks Nik manual is easier than auto focus. Most dragons patrol a territory so you roughly know where they are going so I set up focus at a spot where they might come then just tweak the focus when they are in the frame. The are quite contrasty so you can tell when you have it sharp if you are quick enough. Do you use the same technique with birds? I think this might be better than relying on the autofocus which is a bit slow on my camera No I will use AF for birds in flight, only use manual if shooting through reeds or leaves and camera can't focus. -
My last photo of one of the Thursley Common Curlew before they moved on, miss their call it is so cool Curlew (Numenius arquata) by Martin Billard, on Flickr

I have been a bit slack with my dragonflies this year with only two species in the bag. First Emperor of 2017 by Martin Billard, on Flickr Brilliant Emerald (Somatochlora metallica) by Martin Billard, on Flickr Both taken at 300mm manual focus. Took a few goes to get them but great fun and worth it to see these stunning insects at their best (in flight).

Thanks and as @CRAZYHORSE says you can get some owls that hunt during the day or as this Barn Owl was at dusk.

I had a bit of a sort out of my photos taken in May. It was a busy month with a few really good outings and still loads to go through. Here is a mix of what I saw and took photos some local in Surrey and some in Kent. Seen a few, River Wey in Surrey, Bushy Park, Hampton and in a lake on a Golf Course near Weybridge. So I guess they are quite common. Good to get a photo of one.

Thanks for all the comments everyone and glad you enjoy them as much as I did taking them.

I have been going over to Kent a fair bit to photograph Marsh Harriers but one of the other perks is the odd Hare that pops up so here are a few from my trips. Looks like a good size. Always happy to see one of them along with adders.

Thanks for the comments. I did crop the first a little to balance the bottom reflection and top, in hindsight a little bit more room on the top would have been better. It was just the other side of the river so I guess about 25m and I was using 420mm. The second one was just cropped for composition as again pretty close.

Thanks foe looking and the comments all. It was on the Wey Navigation near Ripley, Surrey. I see deer most days but a first for me seeing one this deep in water on the banks edge.

Young Roe Buck by Martin Billard, on Flickr I was out walking my dogs this morning and one of them started going bonkers so I knew a deer was about. l looked everywhere then saw a slight ripple in the river and there was this fella, chest deep, I guess he had or was just about to cross but he decided after seeing my two he was safer on his bank and made a swift exit. Just as well as there was a much bigger Buck hidden in the field behind, which I spotted 5 minutes later on the way back. Roe Buck by Martin Billard, on Flickr

Just getting out there with a camera is the way to go. Great shots

Best to pick the flowers early in the day as well. They smell like cat pi55 in the afternoon. Our tree is nearly blooming and I have one bottle left from the 23L I made last year. The Mrs don't like it so I will be making some more next week.
-
Nice pics mate! All I have seen are feathers for a week or two. Our local one munches through pigeon like they are going out of fashion.

Lovely bird and photo.
