A lot depends on budget but most modern DSLR are more than capable of taking quality pics but as just-A-snap says a quality lens will make a big difference to quality and price. For example a decent 3rd party Marco or close up lens will set you back over £300, and a decent wildlife lens up to 400mm even more. There are also some very good mirrorless systems about but I don't know much about these. I am sure you might even find a compact camera that could work and it will be better than a phone and a lot cheaper than a DSLR and a couple of lenses. I suggest you work out a budget a take a t

Thanks, check the gate times by calling them if going to Bushy Park, their web site says they are open from 6.30am but it has been 8am all week.

Bushy as in bentley priory? Bushy Park, Teddington I think.

Hobby's are my next favourite thing, drove over to Kent twice last week 135 mile round trip only to see one at a distance. Where about are you as a lot seem to be leaving already going on the sightings on the South coast I was in kent, near allhallows behind kingsnorth powerstation. there has been hobby's at elmley nature reserve around the carpark area Thanks for the info. It was Elmley where I went but only a distant sighting over 2 days. I have found quite a few other spots this year but my local patch still gave the best shots so roll on next May. I keep come back to look at it again, fantastic photo and atmosphere. Great shot. -
did well to get a shot of it spot on thanks need a longer lens Don't know what your budget is but I have no complaints about the Sigma 150-600C even at 600mm it is sharp. I sold one when I got a 500mm prime but got another when lugging that round got on my nerves, I use it 90% of the time I guess. Kestrel by Martin Billard, on Flickr

I drove 250 miles today to try and get a picture of a Hobby (I did) but I think 150 miles for a bag of Mackerel would have been a better use of time, Fresh out of the sea on a BBQ or in a pan with a bit of butter, YUM. Kent here we come, I can tell by the pebbles where to start.

I had a trip out West yesterday and popped into RSPB reserve Ham Wall. I don't really like sitting in big wooden hides but suffered it for a while. Saw plenty of birds including Marsh Harriers, Hobby, Great Crested, Grebe with young, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Buzzard a Barn Owl and others but most were too far away to take decent photos. I did get these two though both of birds I had not seen before. Great White Egret (Ardea alba) by Martin Billard, on Flickr Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) by Martin Billard, on Flickr
