  1. Typical, I thought I would try some out and not one in sight this morning so will have to wait for the weekend and the rain to bring them out.
  2. As others have said, it is simple, it's the kids you have to watch not the dog especially if they are young. Mine are 4 and 6 and they soon learnt when to leave the dog alone and what they can and can't do with her. They all get on really well but we are always aware of what they are doing and make sure they don't wind her up. Same goes for their friends when they come over. My youngest was petrified of dogs a year ago. He would scream or cry if he saw a dog even if it was not near him which is one of the reasons why we got a lurcher puppy. He is absolutely fine now and he loves dogs not j
  3. Kay they are nice photos. I see some of the photos on this site and I'm in awe, I know it takes lots and lots of practice and trial and error to get good at this hobby(job for some) but it is so much fun and what a feeling when it comes off. I am only just getting comfortable trying the manual or part manual functions on my 500D after 6 months and after 1000's of shots. Taking pictures of my dog running is one of the hardest subjects as she is so hard to predict, you always need to be ready or have help. I have taken hundreds of her only to get a handful of shots I really like and even
  4. I was just wondering if there is a tried and tested way of integrating a new dog. We are getting another lurcher on Tuesday and he is a beauty, he is only six months old and seems to have good recall and manners. We already have a 13 month old bitch so I have been taking her over to see him every day for the last week to get them used to each other. We have been out for a few walks and they seem to get on well apart from our bitch jumping him and cutting him off on a chase until he gets fed up and snarls or comes back to heel for help. I am sure they will be ok and she will start to behav
  5. We took the dog out for a walk earlier and there were loads of big light coloured snails about, they look very similar to the ones you get in France on a plate. Now I have had these a few times and I know they taste of mud and garlic but they are not bad at the same time and a bit of fun to eat. So does any body know if these native Surrey snails are edible and how do you prepare them?
  6. It seems you are right as I got talking to a guy I know today who has gun dogs and he says the dogs will understand which whistle is for them or both and if they both come and you want one to stay I should hand signal. It sort of makes sense and I can imagine it working on a gun dog breed but a Salukix and a Bullx who knows but I am going to find out.
  7. I think the way to look at it is why a 10 week old pup is in a dog shelter? Usually because some dumb ass does not get there dog spayed and she gets pregnant, they then realise they can't cope with five dogs let alone one. Or the bitch gets booted out when she is pregnant and they are born in a rescue shelter. Either way they are the lucky ones as many fair a worse fate.
  8. We have a 13 month old bitch lurcher who I have been training to come and sit by whistle command and we are getting another dog who is a 6 month old lurcher in 10 days. He seems bright and has good recall and sit already but not to a whistle. I like the whistle as a command tool for a number of reasons but how do you go about training a second dog. I understand the training part it is just I don’t know whether I should get a different pitch whistle for him or use the same one with different pips or blows for each dog or will they get confused. I am! I would like (well dream of) to be
  9. I have been there with my 13 month old, she would often do what she wanted which included not coming back and if she did she stayed out of reach. I tried all kinds of food treats hot dogs, sausages, black pudding, cheese, liver cake, left over roast but it seems she is not food orintated at all, we just used to get labs following us everywhere. I tried a rabbit skin but she likes live ones only, a squeeky toy, hiding her lead, hiding from her, running away, shouting dog, a whistle, praise and coaxing, puppy classes and none of it worked she just came back when and if she wanted too so
  10. Mods you might want to move this back. We got our lurcher as a 12 week old puppy from Celia Cross Greyhound Rescue nr Guildford (www.celiacross.org.uk) after failing to find a Greyhound that suited us. Yes she was a blank canvass but you also have to realise you do not know what you are getting or how they will turn out as you dont see the parents. What is important is that she does not go back to the rescue center at 1 or 2 and that is our responsibility. I admit she has been close a couple of times but that is only because she has had her Saluki hat on. We were lucky I guess in that we
  11. You learn something every day. Cheers for the replies.
  12. We got given a new chicken a few weeks ago and today I saw her catch and eat another mouse, this is the second one she has had. Is this normal? Our others have never done this as far as I am aware and we have had them a couple of years. I assume it won’t harm her and it is quite handy saving me trapping them. A mouse coursing chicken I wonder what trouble I can get into.
  13. and look closer and our dog not chasing a deer
  14. Got this little fella through the window pulling strands from the left overs of our dogs ball.
  15. The good news is my dog is well on the mend and has had a couple of good walks off the lead, the limp is much better, I think the injury is a memory thing now as well because she went after a rabbit this morning and looked as good as new. I went to a hydrotheropy spa today to have a look and will be taking her there in a couple of weeks, the dogs I saw swimming loved it and they had all got over some serious illnesses and injuries.
  16. Just thought I would mention it is illigal to catch them without a licence. If you call the Enviromental Agency on 014804839868 they will send you a crayfish pack on how and where you can catch them and an application form for a licence, the licence is "free" so worth every penny as you can be fined £2,500 without one. Most rivers have an active bayliff and I have been stopped in the past. £2,500 is a lot for a few crayfish and the fine can be more if you are caught catching the native white claw crayfish.
  17. http://www.kelly-turkeys.com/ This is where my shooting buddy got his 20 from last year in about June I think, he hated them and plucking them was hell but we are going to get some more this year.
  18. If you keep them in a bucket for 6-7 hours they don't seem to taste of mud. You do need loads as there is not much meat on them and the big ones seem to have as much as the little ones. Last time I had some I boiled them in salt water until pink, let them cool to peel and then fried the meat up with chili, ginger, corriander and garlic then rolled some of this with lettuce and mayo in a tortilla. Great lunch. I have done curries before with them, put them in fish pies, in salads and on the BBQ they are good fun if you have loads and people round to eat them and I wouldn't fancy buying
  19. Thanks for the answers it is as I thought and you are right don't want my dog to kill a fox in the garden and I don't want the s$$t that might come from it either. I will try and find a pest controller but they will have problems as I think shooting it is out due a number of reasons, the uncertanty of when it might come back, the size of garden (100' wide and 40' deep), I have had the neihbour at the back moaning about me shooting my almost silent air rifle, garden layout proves difficult to have any cover and the windows make a racket when you open them. Belive me it took some doing tryi
  20. Where do you stand if your dog takes out a fox in your garden and it was seen by busy body neighbour? This has not happened but it was too close for comfort and in broad daylight. Can you send a dog out after a fox in your own garden? if not how can you deter a fox from coming into the garden? I have heard of putting human hair in socks but does it work? especially if this fox ignorers the scent of our dog and that of next doors. He is after our chickens and now he knows where they are I am sure he will be back so he has to be put off for good or got.
  21. Here is mine, she is just one year old and 26tt.
  22. Thanks for the replies and it looks like I will be doing some shopping.
