  1. This thread has some great shots I love the flash shot /\ paulus Tonights owl Short Eared Owl by Martin Billard, on Flickr
  2. The 1.4 does slow focus just a bit but it is still quick enough for most things. Obviously you get 420mm out of a 300mm lens but it is f5.6 not f4. I always shoot RAW so would have used Adobe Lightroom or Canon DPP to process them. When you are using Raw does it slow the camera down in burst mode as opposed to jpeg. Thank you. No it shouldn't but might limit the number of shots. I rarely use my cameras highest burst mode even when photographing fast action sports. I found I got loads more to edit and loads the same.
  3. Another good one Martin.. I keep saying Im not going for owls in the evening anymore, as my images come out shite when the light drops, but, I still go.. I don't blame you they are stunning just to watch and at this time of year a real bonus as any day now they will be off then the Barn owl will hopefully return. There is a fine line for sure, that hour or so before sunset seems to be all I get.

  6. Please pardon my ignorance, what are the advantages of a prime lens over a telephoto? TC Prime lenses have better quality glass, tend to be a lot sharper, a lot faster focusing and of a lower F number allowing more light into camera enabling faster shutter speeds in lower light... Zoom lenses adjust the F number throughout the zoom, so you could be at f5.6 at 150mm and then step down to f6.3 at 300mm which means that you'll often have to change ISO/shutter speed... The zoom lens is a "jack of all trades" but the prime is the "master"... The only zoom I would consider for wildli
  7. I took these yesterday, the Kestrel was whilst out with the mutts and it had been interacting with another. I was told later they had got it together so hopefully some more to come. 10. Thanks for the input and happy to try. She can go a few days without any signs then it happens again, the vet also said to walk her at a different place in case it was a pollen allergy but considering how long it has been going on I doubt it was that.
  11. She has access to acres of grass and we have done raw and packet food. She is now on Arden Grange at he moment which seems to help, I have another lurcher who is he thieving git and will eat everything left around or not locked away and he is healthy so if she ate anything he would have had it first.
  12. It is a wild bird and lives on Surrey Wildlife Trust land, There are a few of them there so will look out for rings on the others,
  13. Our vet put her under to examine her nose as it was at the time when grass seed was everywhere and we thought it was that. She can go a week or three with nothing but this weekend she has been showing symptoms again,
  14. The vet never mentioned this or a CT scan do you know any more?
  15. I came across this beauty last week whilst out with the mutts. This evenings Kestrel by Martin Billard, on Flickr Kestrel by Martin Billard, on Flickr This evenings Kestrel by Martin Billard, on Flickr This evenings Kestrel by Martin Billard, on Flickr Stunning birds up close
  16. Excellent photos How did you take them and with what?
  17. Nope She is also not the stealing type like my other one who will and has ate everything and is still running round like a nutter. I do not think it is a food thing or habitat as in air fresheners or sprays as they are minimal and she has been fine around the house for 61/2 years+
  18. The vet took the video but I can take one next time she does it. Thanks for the reply.
  19. My 7-year-old Saluki cross has been acting a bit funny for a quite few months now. The symptoms are. She starts licking her nose and does a strange sort of discomfort licking round her mussel. When it is bad she tries to scratch her nose. She will also start to feed and the walk away from her food duelling. I have taken her to our vet. The first time they thought it was a stomach complaint and gave her some pills to sort it and we changed her diet but it had no effect. Next they sedated her and gave her a thorough examination and a tooth clean but found nothing. Th
  20. All Thanks for the comments. I agree they are awesome to watch and glad you like them in a photos. Been there quite a few time in the morning (dawn) but nothing a few people say they see them after a rainy night so will try tomorrow. They will be off soon so back to Barn Owl Hunting by Martin Billard, on Flickr

  22. Something up to 300mm or longer, Tamron and Sigma now do a 150mm to 600mm lens for nikon. MPB are good for s/h
  23. Thanks for all the responses. I still wish the photo was better but still a stunning thing to witness.
  24. I took this the other day. Not the best quality as I was try to take a picture of the kestrel hovering then it got struck by the other bird the one on the left which flew off. I all happened very quickly. The kestrel fell to the ground, I waited for a bit but it did not fly off. I was not able to get into the field and check it was ok as I had my dogs with me. Is it another kestrel or a sparrowhawk, I just wish I had a better shot. Kestrel mobbed by Martin Billard, on Flickr
