  1. My point was that humans had domesticated dogs (15-50,000yrs ago) a long long time before the domestication of livestock such as sheep (9-7,000yrs) and cattle (8,000yrs). It is much easier to farm grain and cereals than it is to farm livestock as livestock require enclosures and as you say, will be hunted so ealry man grew grain and crops. The availablilty of free hand outs to vermin would have attracted them in droves and the predators will always follow the prey. A dog that is brought up around a herd will protect that herd in some way be it through barking or other methods, hence why hill
  2. Beside the armour plating, why would you want to damage the best bit of eating on the bird anyway?
  3. If you are going to change any branded food over other than natural occuring foods such as named above, then to avoid any troublesome stomachs despite the age fo the dog it should be done gradually over a period of days and not just at once. Day Current New 1 90% 10% 2 % 20% 3 60% 40% 4 50% 50% 5 25% 75% 6 90% 10% If you buy a small bag of the new to use, if the dog shows any adverse reaction to the food then you've not wasted a boot full of cash on the new stuff that the dog can't eat.
  4. No worries. It could be that she is just a bit shaken having left littermates and the mum too but a day or two on gentle, easily digestable food should clear it up. Make sure she is drinking plenty to replace the fluids and if she isn't get straight to the vets as she will dehydrate rapidly being so small.
  5. The chicken isn't too bad as their physiology is built to deal with meat, my guess is it is the gravy. If I was to drink a glass of gravy I dare say I'd be dashing for the loo as it is a very rich food source. Is the chicken raw, boiled or grilled etc? Try her on boiled rice and chicken for a day or two and then slowly swap the rice for the kibble again so start with half chicken and half rice for two days. Then 1/2 chicken with just under half rice and a few biscuits of kibble. The day after a bit more kibble instead of rice and so on until she is built back up again.
  6. Was the breeder feeding it with gravy and chicken as that could be a little too rich too soon for the wee one?
  7. What was the pup being fed on before you got her? How old is the pup?
  8. Now then now then. A grand hello to you all from a total virgin in the hunting world. Done a bit of beating and the odd target shooting with an air rifle but don't have a clue about any of it. Adopted a saluki x dog from a rescue and the more I look at her the more I want to go out rabbiting with her. I have had a deep interest in where my food comes from and always thought I could trust my suppliers to tell me the truth but it turns out one or two will tell you anything to get your customer so thought it was abotu time I sourced the best organic free range food there is and at the
  9. Thanks in advance for any advice it is very much appreciated. What type of lamp should I be looking at that is easily mobile, gives off a decent beam and has the power duration to last for a coupel of hours? I currently have been using a large type torch with a rotating handle that allows it be used as a spot light but find the battery only lasts about 20mins if I am lucky so I have use it sparingly at the moment. I use it mainly for spotting owls and seeing if there is anything int he surrounding fields where I live but if I am to take things serious later down the line I want to plan
  10. I'll take the plunge and go first then with the pics. Name: Dillon. Age: 4 Breed: Border Collie Where: Bought from working stock in Cumbria (grandparent's were trial dogs) Dillon is the first dog I have ever had. I used to spend every summer holiday on a farm somewhere in the British Isles and spent all holiday with the farm dogs and always wanted a Border Collie. Anyway, got him at 14weeks of age, couldn't keep him still, spent hours and hours training him and he's still not quite where I want him to be trainingwise but that will come. He has been the a Godsend when
  11. It's not a pretty sight but Google "serbaceous cyst on dog". Are they anything like that? If so they can be completely harmless but there is nothing better for peace of mind like getting her checked out at the vets.
  12. The beauty and primitive qualities that caves appealed to man are they are sheltered from the elements and there is only one front to defend - the entrance - making them ideal readymade shelters. If you are sleeping out in the bush exposed on all sides are safe? No. You will always have a blind side and that blind side will see it deep inside that you get no sleep. We originated from the plains of Africa (or China depending on which carbon tests you believe) where there are wild hunting dogs, jackals, hyenas, foxes, wolves and all manner of other species we could have selected. The only is
  13. Cheers guys. Thank you for the words of encouragment. I understand she is young and I don't want to push her too far too soon so a good run every so often is all I am looking for at the minute. The golf course sounds good so I'll have a look into it. How should I go about gaining permission as I don't want to be doing anything that could jeopordise anything with her? I am working on her livestock manners. She has met some horses and not really shown too much apart from jumping behind my legs and then peeking out for a quick "Is the coast clear" glance. Sheep are next on the agenda as t
  14. Thanks Millet. She is a quick learner. s.e.s.k.u I am a firm believer in giving a dog a job and a working dog that is allowed to release it's natural urges in a constructive way is a content and happy dog. Thank you for the well wishes. I am in Baildon near Bradford if anyone knows anyone local doesn't mind having their ear bent over a beer or two (my shout of course)
  15. Hi guys, I seemed to have popped my lurcher cherry by acquiring a rescue pup. I apologise in advance for the long post but any recommendations are gratefully received. She was a rescue from the Dogs Trust at 6months old. Was given to a young couple as a gift but due to them having just had a baby they hadn't the time for her so they locked her in a shed and pushed fod through the door for her. She'd never been walked really and was a like bambi on ice when I got her. I have no idea what lines she is from or anything with her being a rescue, all I know is her age and that according
