Anyone can go out and buy a rifle pretty much and everythign that goes with it from a scope to massive 4x4 hillbillie truck to cart it around in but the most important thing you can obtain the permisiion to use your stuff on some land. I have to admit that I gained my permission through a bit of luck and it was the opportunity of shooting over soem playign fields that lead to the neighbouing stables. A meeting was called yesterday between the land owners, myself and the tenenat they have who runs an animal rescue from the property. All is well and sorted with the concerns and safety be

My bitch isnt keeping or putting weight on
hutch6 replied to wardman's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Along with the wormer, what are you feeding her? A good way to put weight on any dog is through the feeding of liver cake. If you want to avoid the possibility of a runny exit with the dog do half the amount of liver and fill the rest with chicken, tripe and/or beef mince. WARNING: Make sure you ahve other family member's permission before cooking it and keep the cooking area well ventilated - it stinks!! Best way I have found is to use the BBQ. If you have a gas BBQ then light only one side of the BBQ, close the lid to bring it up to temp, put the cake in the non-lit side. If you have -
Fed on a raw diet with plenty of meat for protein etc a dog does not require any food stuffs in the form of carbohydrates as they obtain the glucose they require in their vital organs through the fat and meat they digest. If you are unsure they are getting sufficient and want to top them up them throw in a few boiled new potatos every few days or so. A dog's physiology is not built to deal with cereals

So as explained in my last thread I have the gun, I have the land and I have broken the seal on both gun and land. The landowners are great. We get on really well and they just let me get on with things and when i am there I lend a hand to them or the stable manager in shifting stuff about for them - a good relationship is blossoming between us all which is good. I have been down a few times since my last update as I was off work last week where it was a trade of four days annual leave for nine days off work and I found myself moving from my habitual early mornings to creeping in at sm

The way to tell if it is VHD is to follow the common path of the wind and look in places down wind to see if there are rabbits kicking about, then try up wind and last of all either direction outside of the wind channel. If there are rabbits knocking about then chances are it isn't VHD. If you truly want to be doubly sure you could always ask the land owner if it is ok to dig up a small warren to see if you can find the rabbits corpses or if the land isn't to be disturbed you could buy a rabbit and plonk it in a wire run just outside a burrow and see what happens. Have you checked the burr

Really? Can you PM me the pastry technique as I am getting into my pies - never liked them much as a kid - or would that be the nail in my coffin to obtain such secrets?

Thanks for the comments. Sorry for not getting any pics. I went out again last night with my cousin (owed him one for wrecking his Daystate and he'll be partnering me a couple of times) and even took the Nikon D40 but in the thrill of it all and the laugh we had trying to skin them (got 8 in total if you count the little one) I forgot again. That's it for outings this week. The GF wasn't best happy when I rolled in at around 02:00, but she'll learn I have next week off work so I'll do you picture vultures some of the shoot and my results, I promise I am hitting them and not just bein

I'd borrowed my cousin's reasonably old Daystate PH6 and had done various target shooting around the garden but with the garden only been 15yrds long I had to do some make shift space inventing. The sofas were switched about and the dining room table cleared so with the patio doors opne I had a clear 25yrds from the back of the lounge to the back of the garden. It stood me well for a while despite me looking like I was playing quite a serious game of toy soldiers to anybody walking past as I knelt behind the sofa as cover and lined up my shots. A bit of tweaking of my positioning etc and I

Why not offer your services first and foremost and then later on drop in the "just been servicing the old air rifle as I do a bit fo shooting etc. Noticed you got a fair few pests while I was doing X, Y and Z" the trust is already there and you have your foot in the door which is half the battle?

I work yes. If I am not at work I am not on here generally. Work that one out

I bought an A4 folder, the type you get for school kids, that was made of reasonably thick transparent red plastic. I took the lense cap off the lamp I use (just a 1M candle power torch), drew aroudn the cap with a CD writer pen, cut the circles out (made two so I could adjust the strength of beam) and slipped them into the lense holder. Worked a treat and as the lamp is only on for a few seconds at a time - 30secs max - the discs didn't even get warm.

Hello again, Right, the training is coming together really well now with the rescue dog and she is certainly a different dog to "the pet" I adopted. She is obsessed with the furries and loves to get after them but opportunities are few and far between due to things like laws and walls. There is ample opportunity to run her at the rabbits on the local moors but due to the lay of the land where they are there is just too much cover making it dead easy for them to make quick their escape and they wise up to dogs fast as it is quite popular with doig walkers in general. I could walk her up

I've seen some folk cause some real issues amongst their dogs by getting involved with disputes. The most common cause it that they have one dog a while and then they get anothera few months or years down the line. We automatically assume that the dog that has been there the longest is top dog as it is their house/territory, whatever you like to call it. New dog comes in and within a day or two the dogs are scrapping over something that is not very clear to the owner but to the dogs is very clear. Old dog gives new dog a bit of a show because new dog has presented a challenge to soemthing

That is not resentment or a gruge it is merely a learned response through experience. Its the same as you buying a certain brand of car and having no end of issues with it. You wouldn't do without a car you'd just prefer as different model. The GSD shape, body language, scent or outline would be what was driving the dog's reaction much the same as the way the car's badge would make your spine shiver and you're wallet run for cover. Dogs are incapable of holding a grudge, planning an action that is not presented in front of them, feeling guilty or performing an action to get back at you for

why does dogs eat their own shit ???
hutch6 replied to rocky1's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Ahhh caprophagia or the eating of feces, the age old "Why?" There are loads of reasons given for why dogs do this as has been outlined here so you reallyh need to look at various factors to determine a more obvious underlying cause: Age: Mum cleans the mess up from the pups with a behaviour that goes back to when they used den in the wild and didn't want to alert other predators or rivals to the existence of the den. As pups learn through association very early then thsi behaviour can be quickly picked up and carried on as "the norm". Diet: It is said thast we smell casseole where -
Cheers chief, she's a nutter but by god she makes me laugh.

I agree with what Casso says: "What is in it for me if I bring it back?" Some folk have a dog that will play fetch all day long, never tire of it and yet they don't understand why the dog drops the toy 10ft from them and then sets off again in expectation of the toy being thrown. The owner when you ask them to think about what they do will state "well i just go pick it up and throw again because the dog loves to fetch it". So the dog drops it away from you and runs off leaving you to go mug it and "reward" the dog for this by throwing the toy again. Penny drops. I've tried everything w

Cracking. My dogs loved the snow this morning and felt a bit hard done by when the snowballs stopped coming after a few mins when I couldn't feel my hands any longer.

That's all fine and dandy but what if your dog is in pain and has a genuine reason for whining rather than doing it because it is a way for it to receive attention regardless if it is positive or negative attention? A dog will generally whine due to anxiety, stress or pain so unless you have been rewarding it (just ignor eit) why put the dog through something which is goign to cause even further anxiety, stress and pain? The dog will be a wreck. If a dog whines when you are out and about and it is home alone then there is a long list of measures you can do to resolve the issue without resort
-
When does the dog whine? What do you do (other than telling the dog off) to stop it whining i.e. move twoards the door with it, feed it, let it out etc.? What is the dog's body psture like when it is whining? Tail between the legs, ears back, hanging head etc.? There wil be a logical reason behind why the dog is whining and if you can sort that out the dog will be grateful for not being punished for feeling stressed or anxious which can lead to further unwanted behaviour and you won't be out of pocket. It is usually something simple enough. This is oneof the many reasons e-coll

Two collies and a runnign dog of sorts. Per week I estimate it costs about £8. I get 30Kg of chicken carcasses from a poultry supplier (human grade) for £15 and from that I get 4 meaty carcasses per day each (only order fresh and freeze it myself), 2-3 carrier bags of chicken wings and loads of scraps to use as rewards or treats. I go fly fishing a great deal and sell my catch which pays for the day plus some so I'll go back and catch a few for the freezer so they get trout for free more or less. Hoping to add rabbit to their menu courtesy of the running dog. Other than tha

I am starting from absolute basics (again) with mine. The two collies will fetch until the cows come home and then chase them away just so they can ftech them back again but the running dog, well, she just wants to take her toys to a place away from everything and hord them so it really is starting from scratch with her. I have a little guide for teaching fetch I wrote for a few dog owners and it might help provide a few ideas but you can adapt it how you want based on what motivates the dog and how it behaves - I've used it with slight adaptations for a fair few dogs. I am using a long li
