  1. I wouldn't mind if she came...... As long as she'd finished all her chores first!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. My little girls come ferreting and out bushing with terrier and lurchers. They come shooting sometimes and follow the local beagle pack. They are 6 and 4...... As long as you dont force them, they will do it if they want to.
  3. Sire was a whippet/deerhound and this lad looks just like him. Dam was a beddy grey but he looks more like his Dad. He's 15 months old. 25 tts and weighs 60 lb. Lovely natured dog. Not out and out speed but is quick enough off the mark. Has enough wind to last him all day.
  4. They will work when they are ready....its up to you to recognise when that is, and that is something that comes with experience. Its not something that can be taught and there are no hard and fast rules. Take them out and let them be pups. They will learn more than you will realise just by being out there. Dont be in a hurry on your walks. You may be taking the walk so the dog can have a pee but he's learning about the world.
  5. Not worth wasting your money. They emit an ultrasonic wave and are supposed to irritate any pests and make them move on. Animals soon become used to frequent sounds and smells, its called habituation. A bit like you living alongside a railway line or motorway. After a while you'll get used to it and take no notice.
  6. Sorry to hear about the bad situation mate. I'd be interested in the dog. I'm on the south coast. Do you ever come down this way for work, would make my life easier if you were coming closer. Dont worry if not, I'm sure something can be sorted out. Can you get some pictures to me. I couldnt pm you for some reason. If you can pm a number to me I'll give you a call.
  7. Cheers mate......He'd have to come inside and share the kitchen with a couple of laid back lurchers. I need a ratting and bushing dog. Something that will work with other dogs and ferrets. I'm not keen on bitches so he'd have to be pretty good with other dogs. I'd prefer a dog that doesnt go to ground as I really dont like spending hours digging if I can help it! Can I ask why you're wanting to re-home him. I'm interested if the other lads that have shown interest dont take it any further.
  8. Pm dont seem to be working mate..... Whats he like with kids, other dogs, livestock and ferrets..... Is he kennelled or kept inside. Cheers
  9. Dont you have to use non-toxic ammo for wildfowl in England and Wales....
  10. Teaching a pup to retrieve is one of the easiest things to mess up. It should be fun for the pup. Have a special toy in the early days that is used just for playing fetch. And stop while you are ahead. After a few retrieves, while th pup is still excited stop the game dead and then give lots of fuss and praise, even if it hasnt gone to plan. The pup will soon associate you picking up the toy with something fun, but the key is to stop before it gets boring. I wouldnt use treats while playing fetch as it can encourage the dog to spit out its catch later on. The dog anticipates getting the treat
  11. Can anyone with the right bits of paper and experience join.......
  12. All those that scoff should do a little research on the working poodle....you'd be amazed at how versatile they are. and what they have been used for in the past. I'd have one if I could find a decent working strain.
  13. I had a three quarter cross in the late eighties through the early nineties. He stood around 26 tts and was quite sturdy. From a work point of view he wasn't that useful on the bunnies, but to be fair I wasnt really that interested. On the deer he was the best dog I've had. He had a knack with them and would stay on all day. He would work ahead of a vehicle with no trouble and was absolutely fearless. The downside. He would run through anything. hedges, wire, ditches. Often resulting in a few nasty wounds. He never did learn any fear. And he was a complete arse with other dogs. Not alw
  14. Spot on mate....at least someone knows a bit about dogs. They were also used to flush game in falconry, as tracking dogs, sniffer dogs by some police forces and guide dogs. They were used heavily in the creation of the irish water spaniel too. Poodles are probably the most versatile of the sporting dogs, able to take on the roles of pointer, retriever or tracker with equal success. Fantastically intelligent and easy to train.
  15. She's a cracking looking bitch mate in top condition...
  16. The big but was.....if someone brought a greyhound on in the same way that they would a lurcher would it really be that inferior. I know the ex track dogs get a bad press but if a pup was socialised and given the right kind of stamina buiding exercise would it be any worse than any other lurcher. I was meaning specifically for the taking of deer, sorry, should have been clearer. Didnt mean for hare coursing as the thread was aimed at deer dogs. I've never owned one but I know a guy who had an ex courser and it was blinding. However, I couldnt work out whether it was unique to this
  17. Without wanting to sound too cotraversial, if we are talking about dogs to catch only deer both day and night I would choose a good strong pure bred Greyhound. Brought up and socialised from an early age as you would a lurcher I think most Greyhounds would do just as well, probably better than most crosses. For straightforward point and squirt type work is there a need to introduce another breed to what is esentially the ultimate running dog. The Greyhound has been selectively bred over hundreds of years to do the job of chasing and catching game. Maybe we are trying to fix a problem thats
  18. It was the usual BBC mainstream nonsense. Why John Craven referred to hunting as the 'hunting and killing of foxes' I'm not sure. He almost seemed to imply that with a repeal comes the reinstatement of 'fox killing' in a way that suggests 'fox killing' doesn't actually happen outside of hunting. Not a balanced portrayal in any way. That aside, its almost certain that an elected Conservative Government will push quite hard for a fast repeal in certain aspects of the Hunting Act. It will only be selected sections though. i dont think we will ever see a return to hare coursing. the only thing
  19. If the trees are outside your garden and you dont have permission to shoot over the ground on which they stand you'll be in heaps of trouble if you get caught.
  20. I cant believe no one in Devon has one...!!!! Have you tried a search for air gun clubs in your area.
  21. Just to add a little something if I may.... The baits you buy for general use need to be taken over a few feeds to be effective. Over a short period their use stops the production of the vitamin K1 within the body. If a lethal dose over several feeds isnt taken, which can be the case with inconsistant or haphazoured baiting, the rat will learn to avoid the baits altogether and make future control more difficult. Calling in a pesty first could prove to be the most cost effective thing to do. Hope you get rid of them mate.
  22. For what it will cost to buy or make a trap you'd be better off calling in a local pesty. You cant shoot foxes with an air gun......You wont kill it outright.
  23. I looked at both and joined the Guild. I have to say they have been really good to me. I've had to e-mail a couple of enquiries and have had quick responses with good advice. They have given me a nice little advert in the molecatchers section and I have a few enquiries for work via the site. I also direct people to the site as a good source of info. It raises awarness of what's involved for the poor molecatcher!!! Cant recommend the Guild enough.
  24. If you're impressed with the lightening and shoot that well just wait until you try a decent PCP......!!!!
  25. I'm not sure that most would agree...... Have you never come across a loose strand of wire laying in the grass with an end standing up just enough to wrap a dog. Loose bottom strands that again become disguised by vegetation. Barbed is the worst thing to encounter just because of it difficult nature. Next time you catch your nuts on the way over a loose fence perhaps you should have done a few more push ups before you went out...!!!!
