OK the rat traps arrived finally and have been set for a few days, but with no luck, while the lawn damage has continued. There is a new development though, the last few holes to appear have had a plant root pulled out of the soil and some of it eaten away. Do the nibbled roots suggest a different culprit?

How's everyone elses foxing going ?
subwoofer replied to dave1372's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I don't understand, why it is the farms favourite friend? All the farmers or smallholders I know hate them. OK to those that don't know, they look like a kind of cute dog and the British are dog lovers, but come off it....these are a wild animal that will do whatever it wants. After the recent publicised fox attacks in London and Brighton of young children, how can the fox still be a favourite? My chance to take foxes is limited, in part due to the animal loving members of the golf clubs I shoot on meaning I have been told not to shoot any foxes. I have a couple of permissions where I -
I have just gained two more permissions, two neighbouring golf courses. On one I am currently the only registered shooter, but on the other there are already five others, none of whom I know. The reason I have posted this topic is to find out if there are any groups of shooters who share the same permission/s and if you communicate with each other, work together or if you simply get on with it independently unless you happen to bump into each other. I was also wondering if either this forum or another discussion board would be a suitable place to set up a permission specific notice boa

Does your Shotgun work without the fore-end?
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for pointing that out. I have just tried exactly that, and found what you said. In fact after firing onto the snap caps I found that when trying to open the gun with the forend removed, the ejectors immediately started to move instead of waiting until the gun is open before popping out. I then tried to examine what was needed to make it function properly and cock the gun again and without making something I was not able to. This leads me to ask how bad for the gun is dry firing? If I find myself needing to make the gun unusable by making sure it is not cocked and removing the forend -
I have been looking at getting some sort of security cable to secure my guns when in the car. Previously I had a saloon with a fully lockable boot and seat arrangement making it pretty secure as you would need to cut metal to gain access. Now I have a Zafira which means you only need to break a window to get in, so am looking for a suitable cable. However with regards to my shotgun, a Nikko Shadow, I thought I would test out the 'Remove the fore-end and the gun is safe' theory and was shocked that I could still easily load, close the gun and fire it all without the fore-end. OK, if you are

I have the York Guns Stealth and have tried all the eleys, the FourTen 2", FourLong 2.5" and 3" subsonic. The 2.5" FourLong are the quietest, wasn't expecting that. So that is what I use in the no. 5 shot size.

what to semi and what hushpower
subwoofer replied to zak-s410's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have the York Guns 'Stealth' .410 moderated single barrel shotgun and paid £315 new with a few boxes of cartridges thrown in (they are RRP £389 I think). I use Eley FourLong (the 2.5") No.5 shot, which strangely are quieter than the 3" subsonics or standard FourTen 2". They work well and it is a light quiet gun. I have taken out one rabbit while the others carry on feeding undisturbed. I use an Ultrafire WF-501B with Luxeon K2 Red LED torch mounted to the moderator for night time forays. I also have the Escort in 7+1 and have found it to perform reliably except when fully loaded. The e -
Helping someone get started ...and the law
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks, after you mentioned this I was able to find this document.... http://www.basc.org.uk/en/utilities/document-summary.cfm/docid/DB12FC55-AA2C-4E12-B87529F5D17C4E2F ....which seems to clear it up nicely. Being asked to clear vermin for the land owner I am their 'servant' in this undertaking and will of course check with them that they are happy for me to supervise someone else shooting on their land. -
I have always been involved in shooting sports and I hold an FAC and SGC and hunt on a local farm. Personally I started with an air rifle and moved onto fac rifle and pistol after that. What I have been wondering is how others get involved in shooting (with FAC and shotgun rather than air guns) and how we can encourage them to be involved without breaking any laws. The specific reason for this question is that I have a friend who would like to come along on one of my rabbiting trips and experience taking a rabbit before deciding if he will invest fully in all the equipment. I would rat

I am looking to try a fox call. I have used a technique I was showed which involves sucking air through pursed lips on the back of my hand. I find this difficult to get consistently and although it has proved useful and works at shorter ranges I wanted to try a call. I have found one that is well reviewed, but can't work out if 'Foxcalluk', or 'Fox caller' is actually the original, or if the are both exactly the same: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270588666789&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT http://www.foxcalluk.co.uk/ Are the Lohman, or Acme calls any good

Does it matter what age the critters are?
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for all your answers, as it was the first fox I have ever shot I wanted to see what the general opinion was. The fact is that if I am trying to reduce the numbers of a pest species, as long as I treat the animal with respect and do everything I can to prevent suffering if an opportunity to despatch one of them presents itself I will take it. A very interesting point of view was the one regarding land neighbouring fox lovers who feed them and encourage them so if you wanted to clear a den, and it was on their land, the only thing you can do is to take the ones that come onto the land -
Two (or more) kills with one shot?
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
So did the single pellet bounce around inside the doe and actually kill all 6 embryos? If not they would then have died of exposure, malnutrition, or the fact your mate stuck a knife in them, rather than all being killed by the projectile from a single shot. I'll be a little more specific - I am asking about direct kills of distinct animals rather than consequential ones such as the young of pregnant or 'in-milk' females. -
I can't work out if it is something about my setup (Ruger 10/22, SAK moderator, Subsonic HP ammo) or about my choice of shot placement, or if it is simply what they always do, but when I hit a rabbit with a head shot, more often than not, as I hear the shot strike, the rabbit does a big jump so that it spins over and then lands flat on its back stone dead. The other times they either simply slump, or are knocked sideways off their feet, but more often than not it is 'Boing...flop'. I am guessing that with shotgun, the multiple pellet strike results in a more massive trauma knocking the rab

This topic is not about showing off, but is because I am curious to find out how common it is for a single shot to result in more than one kill. In a recent rabbit shoot, as I took aim for a head shot while the rabbit was standing, another rabbit behind it started to raise its head. It ended up directly behind the first about 50cm further back. I squeezed the trigger and heard thack....thack and the two rabbits fell. I was using hollow point subsonic .22 (Winchester X) as I had a few to use up. Normally I use Eley Subs, which in testing were found to expand more and penetrate less than

Does it matter what age the critters are?
subwoofer posted a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I took my first fox last night. During a lamping session I came across a den and had four pairs of eyes glowing brightly back at me (mainly using a red lamp with a white one on standby). Once I was certain of my safe overshoot and that I was indeed looking at foxes, I took the cleanest shot and down it went. After going to check it was a clean kill I found what was a young female fox. It had very soft fur and I think it is one of this year's litter (so ~10 weeks old?), however if it was it must have been well fed as it was not that small. So this leads me to ask, if a species is a pes -
Nutter On Killing Spree In Cumbria!
subwoofer replied to dave1372's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
From the news stories it was a shotgun not a firearm. This is the least restricted type of licensed gun in the UK where you do not even have to have a reason to own one (unlike a firearm). It could have been stolen, or it could be legally held I am surprised the journalists haven't said which yet. The trouble is that even though more people are killed with knives than guns in the UK, there will still be a strong knee jerk reaction and the anti-gun lot rubbing there hands with glee. -
I tried to add a helpful bit of advice, perhaps a little more diplomatically than you. However after you posted your advice he seems to have locked the comments, so I had to PM it directly to him suggesting he might consider deleting the video which only goes to show the following is true: It is better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt! He probably though he was being cool, but how cool would he have felt if the LOADED rile had fallen off the worktop, discharged and killed one of his family! Frankly as much as I am against

When I use subsonic in my standard Ruger rotary mags, after every 50 rounds I have to clean them as the subsonic leaves so much gritty residue (unburnt powder). Luckily this is very easy with the rotary ones. I have just got hold of a second hand Butler creek 25 round mag (with steel lips). The Butler creek is 'used' so is a little dirty and I would like to clean it, but as the magazine is glued together, there is no way to disassemble it. I don't want to use an ultrasonic bath to clean it as this will flood the mag with water and inevitably cause rust (having seen the spring and screws fr

Book recommendations for Hunting
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Thanks for the comment, but please could I now only have book recommendations I don't need anyone else telling me I should go out with another more experienced hunter, when the purpose of this topic was to find some good books. -
Book recommendations for Hunting
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Dave thanks for the book recommendation, fox is one of the quarry I will be hunting. -
I have a later Mark 1 Webley Eclipse (it is a mark 1 but has the silencer threading) that was bought in the late 1980s. I gave it a good molyslip treatment and have kept it well stored. Still on the original spring, as after frantically going through 5000 pellets I slowed right down just taking the occasional pigeon or squirrel and the occasional zero check. I never leave it cocked so the spring is still very strong and it hits as hard as ever. The PCP pre-charged pneumatic style I have never owned. Originally these seemed reliant on diving bottles and were very expensive. Now you can get

Book recommendations for Hunting
subwoofer replied to subwoofer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have read many magazines and tend to find mostly stories rather than helpful advice and basic techniques or quarry specific information. That is why I wanted a book. You are right that being mentored by an experienced hunter is the best, but I would like to read up in advance (and it is not always easy to find someone to go hunting with), so I am still looking for a good book or two. -
Although I have been target shooting for about 20 years, I have not done much hunting. I have, so far, only taken the occasional live quarry (squirrel, pigeon and rat) in the back garden while sniping out of a window with an air rifle. Now I have a selection of shotguns (mainly used for skeet), a .22LR rifle and a couple of permissions, I want to make the most of my hunting trips. I am looking for a book or two that give a real insight into the best way to maximise my success, with information on quarry types and the best methods to hunt them including time of day, season, weather etc.
