    My dog ripped his underside open jumping barbed wire last year - he spent a fortnight in a cage, muzzled and with lampshade on! I felt tight but he pulled it out once and the area was begining to get infected.

    Sound like the average Geordie on a Friday night, minus the brindle colouration... they're usually tango orange or black & blue...

    Yeah, i don't think they're overly long... but I do have the same prob with black nails on my Pointer dog, I have a Dremel and file them down! As long as you keep and eye on them, they shouldn't needed doing more than once a fortnight..

    Defo agree with Hannah - don't give it back to the guy! Rescue will be much better for it:)

    I don't think it's you at all! This dog sounds like he's had a rough start, dogs aren't nervous of people for no reason. Yes perhaps a more experienced dog person, i.e. the woman with the Springers, was able to gain his trust a little more, and the fact she had other dogs would have helped, he's more than likely been with other dogs since a pup. This is very sad, I think a lot more thought and advice should have gone into your decision as to where to get a dog - how much do you know about this guy and the dogs past?     It will heal - but it might not heal well and may result in a permanently lame dog, or the need to amputate it if it goes necrotic. Depends on the type of fracture. Has it been looked at by a vet? See if she has feeling in the end of it by pinching it, if she does I would advise bandaging the whole foot over the hock. Put cotton wool betwwen all toes and around foot, bandage upto hock. Ensure not too tight. Put buster collar (elizabethan thing) on and cage rest dog, supervised i.e. in house.

    Totally agree - don't put owt on it! Best chance is to restrict her movement - is she in the house? Keeping her warm and comfy, on antibiotics she should heal, but probably slowly given her age. Any overstretching movement should be avoided - as you said if her skin has already been debrided (trimmed) where it dried up and the stitches failed - the next step would be a graft, so try not to let her break a walk and no jumping! I've seen worse heal, but it is in a very awkward place. The wound needs to ooze and breathe so don't mess with it, and defo keep a close 'eye' on smell of infection.

    Has you vet taken skin scrapes to rule out parasitic infection? It could be a folical infection, sometimes seen in sheading dogs. Ypur vet really should be a little more helpful! Have you been to a small animal vet? Coz livestock vets aren't too hot on canine dermatology! I would get hold of some Malaseb shampoo, 3 times weekly bathing, it is an antifungal and antiseptic. Available online or from your vet.

    Have you seen those German Micro Pigs?? Don't grow bigger than small dogs - bitesize! I couldn't though, too darn cute!

    God yeah... think how many rehomed dogs of all ages, who have to get a new name. They're fine! At the end of the day, a name is just another command...

    I feed my dogs 50:50 dry (skinners) and raw meat which I currently buy in 2kg bags from Jolleys called prizechoice. I'd love to find somewhere I could buy meat in bulk, preferably minced... anyone know anywhere local to Newcastle/Stanley??

    When did he last pass anything? Have you checked it's not his anal glands he's trying to empty? I would get some lactulose from the vets...

    Yeah beagle has a rucksack, she carries things for me! Rowdy is concentrating on his obedience and whistle commands, but once I've got that, we're going to start field training on grouse, hopefully new pup out of Breeze will too. Beagle has brought me rabbits and a pheasant once! Yorkies are there for amusement sake... though our old yorkie x JRT was a fantastic ratter in her day.

    Just thought I'd add to my initial intro, with some pics of my Pointers, Beagle and affiliated dogs... Breeze 5yr old - currently day 45 in whelp Rowdy, 18months Seren 17 months, Breezes daughter (here while Breeze is away having her litter) Pixi Beagle, 2yrs, Alfie, 2yrs, Brothers dog Rags, 1yr & Mrs Tiggy Winkle 10yr, my mothers Yorkies Just a couple of pics then!!! And that's without the cats, chickens, rabbits and turtles!!!
