ferreting with out a ferret finder !?
postiepaul replied to langouroux's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I used bells quite a lot in the 1990s,and they were useful when ferreting thick brambly hedges on my own, they gave a warning of the ferret surfacing unseen and moving off, or if it come out the other side. they were ok in dry weather or in sand , but clog up and dont work if earth gets in them. They were small cat bells from petshop, sometimes the ferret will get stuck if it goes through a net but not normally a problem . I used to get the ferret to wear the the bells in the hutch for a while so they get used to them before they went out. Many the time it was a relief to hear that tinkle, es -

the badgers are digging the nests out where I go, so the evidence is there to see. -
Feinwerkbau 127 sport
postiepaul replied to Fidgety's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
just found it in an old airgun mag, cheapest discount price in 1978 was £70,, a bsa mercury at the time was £37.50 at a discont company. For an extra £10 the feinwerkbau would be tuned which included stripping , lubricants, chamber honing and transfer port reshaping. .177 was model 124, and .22 was model 127 sport. £70 was a lot of money back then and I never owned one. The discount price business was cutthroat then and some companies were cutting back so much that they were only making £1 profit per gun, which meant that after sales service was nil, and shooters were advised to p -
perhaps it was one of those bullsh*t, neck breaking snares.

A firm squeeze behind the ears with thumb and index finger of free hand will make them let go, useful for when they get a stubborn grip on a rabbit too. I can only remember 1 bad bite which was when I went to buy one, the bloke said thats funny, that happened to the last person too. Isaid keep it.

nicely ask the owner if its possible to move the horsebox to a good sniping position and set yourself up in it and shoot through the slats, should stop the ponies pestering as well.

Can only remember ever seeing one ginger, and that was caught while ferreting in the 1990s. It was in fine condition like the one pictured, and there was almost certainly no domestic in it.

Absolutely beautiful. A pleasure to see your work, thankyou. I havent a clue how to make a net, but I do love dying them in patches of colour, thats the limit of my skills lol.

I remember reading that a few white ones would sometimes be releasd with the reared birds. The keepers would look out for them every day. If one day they were gone then it was a sign that predators or poachers might be about.

glad somebody brought a bit of humour to this post. Thinking of hiring a truck to get a load of these footless wonders, but then I thought wait and see if anyone breeding any ferrets with no feet this year, to even up the odds a bit. Can anyone give a clue where these rabbits are LYING up. They shouldnt really be shot, unless it is a sporting shot of one going downhill on a bicycle. Please dont tell me ferrets got paws, not feet. Davy, you really shouldnt argue with a pussy about paws, after all I got four of my own, best wishes postie pussy.

hello davy, feet mate. read G S Waters snaring part1 avoiding problems or anything that describes signs of rabbits like droppings, scratching or footprints. Ever heard of a lucky rabbits foot. And there was me thinking you knew it all.

hi postiepussy have you not heard of waterproof gear and wellies davy if a guy wants to get up in the middle of the night and put on waterproofs and wellies to shoot a rabbit that I can shoot in the evening wearing trainers and sunhat, then thats his choice. Ive done plenty of both and I know what I prefer. Meeeooooow.

the evening after a fine day suits me and the rabbits. Too often at this time of year everything is absolutely dripping with a heavy dew in the early morning which is a pain if your stalking and bellycrawling, the rabbits dont like wet feet and nor do I.
-
I dont think it really matters. They say rabbits are quicker to bolt in early morning because they are still fresh from a nights feeding. But now I got a bit older, I go when it suits me, mid morning or early afternoon, and the rabbits still bolt much the same. I know its a great feeling being about at the crack of dawn but it isnt strictly necessary, go when you can.

got a feeling distortion is more to do with the hardness of the lead mix used to make the pellet. pure lead pelllets flatten more than pellets like accupell which are a harder mix. probably the best pellet for damage and distortion, especially if it hits bone, is a pure lead dome.

one of the biggest laughs of my life was when my old father in law lit the fire in the living room one xmas morning and none of the smoke would go up because a jackdaws nest blocked the chimney. The whole room filled up with smoke and it was a laugh seeing him panic to put the fire out, we had to open the windows all day. Anyway good shot and well done.

check the inside is. absolutely free of dust, cobweb or any tiny bits of crud picked up from shooting. the smallest bit could affect the air around the pellet and send it off course. I always keep a coinbag over the barrel in storage to keep everything out, when not in use. sorry if you knew that but its just one of the things Im particular about and is a reason for a gun going off zero.

good food and easy to get when theres loads in the cornfields, I stick a knife in the top of the breast and slice down to give the ferrets a good start because sometimes, young ferrets especially, dont break into them very well.

rats in the compost heap
postiepaul replied to ellir0305's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Dont put edible scraps in the compost because it is bound to attract rats sooner or later. I had the same problem in my last home, and Im afraid its an ongoing problem, if you catch some this week, next week there will be fresh ones arriving. grass cuttings, weeds, teabags etc is fine but nothing edible. -
Too good to put back in the shed, well worth spending a rainy afternoon doing it up. spares are available and it dont seem to have too many problems anyway. do it!!!

i go out with my ferrets every week i stop end of feb as they start to =breed some things i no is when the young one are there your ferrets stay under longer as they catch them and kill them. so your wasting your time. the ohter is your killing next years rabbits if you want lots next year leave them to breed. if you kill one doe with young yours killing 50 that you can have in november do you get what i mean bit of an exaggeration, the young rabbits are getting hammered by every predator going every day. We got badgers scraping out nests two a penny, buzzards killing every morning and d
